    1. Booked a spcial at the Plaza that included room and bottle of champagne-never got champagne.
    2. They had noted it was for my 30th bday, and it was my actual bday when I checked in, not just close to it...not so much as a happy birthday or anything.
    3. The guy at the front desk acted as if he was doing us a huge favor by checking us in and getting us room a couple hours early.
    4. The room itself was large and in pretty good shape, I only wonder why when they did the rehab they left some stuff unchanged....all new furniture, wallpaper, etc, but leave the old stained light switches, and banged up bathroom door.
    5. When you get off the elevator, there are 3 halls, and no numbers telling you which way to go.

Was very unimpressed with my stay, I didn't bother complaining as I only spent one night and do not plan on staying again.

So sorry the Plaza didn't meet your expectations... and a belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Your post speaks to those of us who expect a certain "something" when visiting Las Vegas. To me and many others, the hotel is far more than a "cheap room to pass-out in..." as I hear so often on this board. The staff can make a HUGE difference in the quality or lack of same in a stay, as well as attention to some details. I don't think anyone expects the Plaza to be the Wynn, but you comments are indicative of others, even since the remodel.

The staff's attitude may be more important than the interior decorating.

I have stayed at MSS more than a dozen times. Perhaps there are some negatives there, but the front desk ladies, drink girls, slot attendants, etc, all act like they like me. Do they? Maybe. I sure like them.

Like they say in New Orleans, " if you give me a smile, I'll give you one, too! "

I think the staffs attitude was what started it. That can make or break a stay. I did not have high expectations for the room, I had stayed 2 nights prior at Cosmo in a terrace room, so I knew it was going to be a major step down. But I was very excited to stay downtown and party for my birthday.

I wouldnt expect a happy birthday anywhere, even at a front desk. Although they are to make your stay a pleasant one, its just not something I would let ruin my trip. I also wouldnt let something like a light switch or lack of signs in a hallway. Just sounds like you expected something more. It is an old downtown hotel that has been refurnished, but its still just been spruced up. Like the say, you can put lipstick on a pig, but...

I agree with not expecting too much at The Plaza, but I would at least expect signage from the elevator telling me which way to go to get to my room, and a decent attitude from the employees. Also, not that it made a big difference in the scope of our trip, but the check-in clerk at Flamingo acknowledged my wife's birthday, which occurred 3 weeks prior to our arrival (info from TR card, I guess). Again, not a big thing, but it was a nice touch, and Flamingo isn't exactly a high-end property.

Yeah, when you step off any elevator at any hotel, there should be a sign:

    ROOMS 400-415------->

    ROOMS 416-430<-------

That is almost common sense one would think. I don't know if I have ever seen a hotel that didn't have signs like that. Weird

I've stayed at Plaza numerous times and have always seen signs. Maybe drunken shenanigans or construction is possible?

Drunken shenanigans are the best kinds of shenanigans.

The attitude from the top management can affect the attitude on the lower levels.

Unfortunately if the lower level (front end/service workers) aren't helping the situation, there may not be a place left for them to work.

I was thinking about staying there again on my very first solo trip in late march or april.

wife and I found the rooms to be adequate for the price and we liked the pool.

we commented on how there was always security by the elevators.

my dear wife recently passed away and I will hopefully be able to do a solo trip and don`t want hotel hassles to add to the experience.

I can get another place like el cortez, fremont or the d for same cost but I
liked the plaza pool but the way things are going there it may not even be open.

Exactly what did the guy at the front desk do to make you feel like he thought he was doing you a "huge favor" by checking you in. Can you explain?

    Plaza

I've stayed at the Plaza twice. The main reason I stay is I can almost always get a free room there (even though I don't gamble there that much). The rooftop pool is very nice and it's the 2nd best pool in downtown Vegas. They also have a decent gym at the Plaza. Most of the other downtown casinos don't have a gym. I play craps a lot and even though I had a very successful session at the Plaza, it was a very depressing place to play. The dealers barely talk to you and most of them look like they are at a funeral. I remember buying in for $300 and cashing out for around $500 and I got out of there. It was weird to win money but still not have fun. There is just a negative vibe at the Plaza there that cannot be explained. Having said all this, I will probably stay there again due to the reasons mentioned earlier. I will probably gamble "just enough" to get a another room offer.

As far as a fun place to play, the Fremont is pretty fun. One night, I decided to "drink free" when I was playing there. I placed 6 bucks on the 6 and 8 and when I got one hit, I went down to 3 dollar a piece--which insures a small profit no matter what happens next. Drink service is excellent there. As long as you give the waitress a dollar tip, she comes back about every 20 minutes. I walked away with a modest profit for the night AND it was fun.

You must not have ever tried to get the Bell Desk guy to look up from his paper! They should just bronze him.

Not to rag on MSS, because I've stayed there many times and generally enjoyed it, but I've always found the hotel/front desk personnel to be indifferent at best, the player's club personnel to regularly act like they ARE doing you a favor to help you, and the casino floor personnel to be terrific.

    Reston.....

I will concede that there is one particular lady at the player's club who who has a permanent case of the trumps.

The guy at the bell desk may be a fixture. I've never asked him for assistance.

There are two ladies at the front desk who started out expressionless with me. I worked on them with thank you'd & laughs & smiles, and now they "unfrozen".

Like you say, the people who work the casino floor are generally very nice.

The staff at the Cal also seems pretty pleasant, although I've never stayed there. However, I am still working on a couple of those guys who work the sports book. Whew! Those guys are tough to make smile!
