When I get into the cab at McCarran, should I tell the driver to take Paradise to Flamingo(for the Augustus Tower) for the cheapest route? I remember paying $22 for two people. Just sayin' if he keeps the cost down, I might tip him more.

That will get you there pretty fast. I prefer Swenson, to Trop, to Koval, to Flamingo. Either way is good.

Make sure your driver understands English and knows exactly that you are going to Caesar's South entrance on Flamingo!
Caught a cab from McCarran last week. I told the driver "Caesars South Entrance please, take Paradise to Flamingo, and don't tunnel me!" He said ok and off we went. As we were going West on Flamingo he was all the way in the right lane by Bill's Casino and he hangs a right on Las vegas Blvd. I was furious!! I asked him why did he do that, and that I had specifically told him to go to Caesars South Entrance on Flamingo.
He replied with, "You didn't say that! Had I heard you, it would have saved me a lot of time waiting at this light and all the taxis ahead of us."

It was 5pm and the traffic on LV Blvd was thick. I paid him $22, the total came to $21.20 (the sum of the 2 meters).

Had he listened, the fare would have been less and he would have received a real nice tip. Luckily for us there was no wait at the Platinum line at the main check-in so we got our room super fast!

So in short, I kinda got long hauled. More fare, but less tip. Go figure.

I was at the new Terminal 3 and it cost exactly $20.50 before tip to the Flamingo side (Augustus Tower) late October.

Guessing he probably only heard "don't tunnel" and shut the rest out. Just a guess.
