Help us choose a hotel....

We have made the decision to stay downtown for our trip, April 7th - April 12th. The Strip doesn't offer good value that week because of the broadcasters convention. I've been reading reviews and checking out room prices. I'm overwhelmed.

The only hotel I've stayed in downtown is the Fremont, so that's the only one I can compare anything to. The room was fine, if not pretty small. Bathroom is teeny tiny, but worked. I liked that the rooms appeared to be modern and updated. I'm not a Diva, so I just want a clean comfortable place to lay my head at night. No frills is ok. We don't spend a ton of time there anyway. We do need two beds.

We love to gamble, mostly table games, and I do enjoy a little video poker from time to time. We focus most on Craps, enjoy some Pai Gow and other various games, very rarely play Black Jack. We also love NLHE poker, both cash games and tournaments. We hope to play some cash and several tournaments during our stay. We don't need to stay where we play downtown, with everything being so close. We also may hit the strip for a day. I would classify both of us as low rollers with a total gambling budget of $1000 or less each for the week.

Price doesn't really matter. Everything downtown is inexpensive and within our range.

I like varied food choices, but frankly downtown, I think you can jump from hotel to hotel so easy, that it doesn't matter what your hotel offers. If you don't like it, walk across the street.

Keeping all this in mind, let's hear some ideas! I want to get something refundable booked and then may change later if a better price or options comes up. But I want to get something set in stone now.

You really can't go wrong with The Golden Nugget. Pretty much the class of downtown. Great rooms, food and customer service. The casino is very nice too. Hope you have a great time.

The Plaza is newly renovated, small room, but very clean, new furnishings.

Of course, I agree with the above - can-t go wrong with the Nugget.

 

If price isn't an object, then Golden Nugget wins easily. It's the only four-star hotel downtown, an awesome pool, and it's right in the middle of the Fremont Street Experience. The D just finished most of its remodeling and all the guest rooms have been refurbished. And the funkiest rooms downtown are the Cabana Suites at the El Cortez, which is two blocks east of the Fremont Street Experience but is the anchor for the revitalized Fremont East district.

For five straight nights, I'd probably go with the Nugget for the higher quality of the room, and the chance to use the pool on a day when the gambling budget dries up a little earlier than anticipated.

 

As most have said, Golden Nugget hands down. But as much as I've stayed there, I always enjoy the El Cortez Cabana Suites as well. It's a different experience altogether, but I think you can't go wrong with either. Mix it up if you can, but I'd start at El Cortez and hit GN second.

I have stayed at Golden Gate, Golden Nugget, Four Queens, Fremont, Fitzgeralds/ D, and the El Cortez (Tower Rooms).

IMHO I like out of all them the Fremont. Although the Golden Nugget is great, I find the walk from the Carson Tower to be too long. I wouldnt recommend this tower. Although I like the renovated rooms at the D, I am not a fan of the food choices. The El Cortez is great but I like to be in the centre of Fremont Street at night. The Golden Gate is also good but the noise in the older section from Fremont can be quite loud.

 

We were very pleased with the new room we got at the D. Food choices weren't an issue; you can eat anywhere.

 

As much as I'd love to stay in the Cabana Suites at El Cortez, I think they only have rooms with 1 King. We need a 2 bedded room unfortunately. We want to stay in the same room, but we each need our own space. Maybe 1 bed next trip, but I'm just not there yet!

 

Get two rooms, as cheap as the rooms are, you'd still be coming out ahead

 

I would highly recommend Main Street Station. They have some of the biggest rooms in downtown. The rooms are always clean, well kept and the beds are very comfortable. I love the great service I always get from their staff and the prices. The triple 7 brewery restaurant has some great food and the buffet is the best in downtown IMO.

 

Their buffet is easily one of the best in the entire city, not just downtown. Especially for what it costs, great food and very affordable.

 

MSS Buffet

The MSS buffet used to be great, but we haven't found it to be nearly as good the past couple of years. They've cut back on variety, don't replenish dishes as often, and offer lower-class cuts of meat on regular nights (i.e., brisket when it used to be roast beef). Ate there on steak night about a month ago and the steak was definitely not worth the extra price that night. Their collard greens have always been killer, gotta give them that.

We actually prefer the Golden Nugget's buffet now. May not be as large, but seems higher quality. That said, pretty much any of them, even Fremont, are just fine for breakfast. They all have an omelet station and decent variety.

 

GN's room quality varies. If you do go GN, get a room in the new Rush Tower. Probably the best and newest rooms downtown.

I've stayed at the MSS, Cal and Fremont. While size varies, they were all good clean rooms close to the action.

 

I agree that the MSS buffet may not be as well as before but it is pretty good for the price you pay, lower than other buffets.

LAS VEGAS (AP) -- Health inspectors have closed two eating areas in the the iconic Golden Nugget casino in downtown Las Vegas for numerous code violations including a pest infestation.

The Southern Nevada Health District inspectors ordered the closure of the 24-hour Carson Street Cafe and the employee dining area on Tuesday.

Golden Nugget spokeswoman Tiffany Hauck said in a statement that the casino was upset that someone had dropped the ball. She assured guests it would not happen again.

The health district cited the Carson Street Cafe with 27 demerits.

Health District spokeswoman Jennifer Sizemore said she had could not speak to the nature of the violations until she saw the full report.

 

So much for GN being better than MSS rofl!

MSS was voted top 5 in Vegas twice, once by LVRJ and once by USA Today. Their prices are amazing!, 8.50 for lunch can't be beat either. I'm currently hooked on the pulled bbq pork, best I've ever had. I guess I have nothing to compare them too, since I've only been going there for two years. If they were better before, I'm glad I don't know there difference now lol.

 

The places I have experience with:

I'm sweet on Main Street these days. It strikes the perfect balance for my wife and I between nice/fancy and comfortable. Also, I have a major love affair with the brew pub there (777 Brew Pub).

The Nugget is where I'd go if I had someone I was looking to impress. The Gold or Rush towers is where you want to be.

The plaza is serviceable if the price (including the resort fee) is right. I don't really enjoy playing here, but Hash House is yummy-licious.

I'd steer clear of 4 Queens. The room I had was dated and I didn't find anything there that made me go "Wow!" It's not a *bad* place, I just didn't fall in love with it.

 

Agree, GN Rush Towers is where you go for luxury and the nicest surroundings. Mid-week rates are usually very good, too.

But if you're looking for the two-bed option at El Cortez, you might try the Tower rooms there. While I've not stayed in the Tower yet (will be next month), I've consistently heard good things about them (with the only minus being bathroom counter space). And these rooms you don't have to walk outside to get to.
