My wife and I were leaving vegas and decided to stop at one more casino before heading to the airport. We were cutting it close and forgot to fill the gas tank and were also 2 hours late on the return. So the guy checking the car says you know you didn't fill the tank and it's 2 hours late the charge per gallon is 5.91 and the late fee is 23.00 per hour. He tells me if you help me i'll help you. I say how much help do you need he says 30.00 will cover it. So I gave him the 30.00 and he printed me a new reciept without the charges on it. It would have cost me 30.00 to fill it anyway. I was suprised this guy had the gutts to make a deal like that and take my cash right in front everyone..

While I've never had that specifically happen to me, but on all rental agreements it states that the car must be brought back with a full tank of gas or else there is a charge per gallon to fill it up. That charge differs by the company, but yes that takes a lot of guts to do that in front of everyone.

Happened to us a few months back

I slammed that car door so hard it's probably still shaking,I was so mad I could have bit the head off a baby duck.I DONT like being hustled.
Mrs.JG was also really po'ed at the guys attitude ,we went inside spoke to the manager in firm language that we're not about to be screwed by some &%$# head.
He went in his office and removed the extra charge.
Apparently this happens a lot ,some people just dont fight it and I'm sure guys on expense accts. could care less so this goes on like long hauling .
It was back in June ,I think at Enterprise , one of the bargain outfits anyway. Forgot to mention,,I was on time and filled the tank up at the place on the strip right by the return .

I hate that kind of hustle too. I've found that if you have the energy to fight this kind of BS, they'll usually remove the extra charges. For me it just depends on how late I am and how much the charge. In your case it was about a wash, as you'd pay roughly the same to fill up anyway.

But yeah, the nerve for him to play that game in front of people...

We thought about complaining, but we were short on time and figured they would say thanks for telling us and charge us anyway. I think it does happen alot in vegas.

I'd have taken the offer. The charges, at least, sounded legitimate before the hustle. Unethical approach, but you came out ahead.

The charges are legit. There is no reason to be slamming car doors, yelling at managers, etc. You agreed to rent the car at the appropriate daily and hourly rate. It is right on the contract. You also agreed to bring the car back with a full tank.

The guy should just charge you and be done with it.

If he opts to buck the company rule and take a bribe, that is another story.

On the other hand, if the tank is full and they try to hustle you - then go ahead and slam the car door on his hand! Just kidding about the slam, but you do need to bust them for that crap.

yeah I don't understand the issue, the contract was in violation, the employee decided to offer a compromise off the record so I guess I'd take that if it was a better deal money-wise? i've never been late on a rental so i've never seen this "offer" before

When I returned my car to Dollar in Vegas last month, they wanted to see my gas receipt. The gauge was reading full, so I don't know.:confused2:

I agree the charges are legit. When you make a reservation on line and put in time later than the pickup time, the hourly charges for late return clearly show, at least on Dollar they do.

They've been very clear with me at Dollar that you are to present a gas receipt with the date of the return showing when you drop off the car. It's not an issue of whether the tank is full. If you don't, you get charged $16.99. It's their rules, even if they aren't logical. I've showed my receipt every time and not had an issue. You've gotta pay attention to all that you are signing, initialing, and agreeing to.

I've never had to present a fuel receipt, even at Dollar.

Advantage now lets you pre-pay for half a tank, which does work for a shorter rental.

Once (Alamo) I was running waaayyyy late and had to choose between turning it in empty or missing the flight! I turned it in empty and yes, they gouged me, but I successfully expensed it out. :)

If you return the car with less than 75 miles on it, Dollar (and probably others) willl charge you if you don't show a gas receipt. This is because many cars still appear full after a couple gallons are out of the tank, and they were taking a loss on that. So you have to prove that you really are returning the car "full". There is a gas station at the corner of Warm Springs and Gilespie, so I always top of the rental there.

That makes sense. We ended up not using the car very much.:nworthy: 1 RT to the Strip and 1 RT to the airport.

That Sinclair station was 8 cents/gallon higher than anywhere in the valley when I was there in February. Even the 7-11 on Las Vegas Blvd. three blocks away was cheaper. It's pretty clear their main customers are people returning their rental cars to avoid the high return fees.

I don't see what the problem with the OP is. They basically paid what they would have paid for being late and not filling the tank, maybe even better off if the tank was more than a gallon short. That the attendant pocketed a few extra bucks is between him and the company.

I guess the attendant could have charged the OP the late fee and then charge the high gas prices so it might have been $35 or $40.

I would just pay or tip the attendant and consider it the cost for returning the car late without filling up the tank.

In law had rental (not sure which) but the counter told him right up front to bring a receipt back. When my in law questioned this he was POLITELY told that they have people bring them back full and when next driver got the car it quit on them. It had been filled with water!!! Now I don't blame them once I heard that. But I have never had to produce a receipt from any rental company (about 4 different ones).

I was more than happy to pay the 30.00 instead of the 60 or 70 dollars. I was just suprised the guy was so ready to take my cash and risk losing his job.

I understand what the OP is talking about. It's weird and uncomfortable to deal with an employee who is blatantly ripping off his employer. It makes you wonder what they will do to get your cash under normal circumstances or whether you should do business with a company that have people like that working for them.

That is my first thought. If he is going to rip off the company, what is to say he wont rip you off. Make up some kind of damage, or run the charge for the fuel and late fee after you have departed....

You have a receipt from when you checked the car back in. Any damage found after check in is the renters problem.
