I may be a little optimistic here, but do non-US residents have to pay tax on any 'sizeable' winnings? I understand that US residents have to fill in some sort of tax form when receiving a hand-pay, but would this apply to non-US tax (i.e. UK) payers? Thanks
This is second-hand, but I believe the casino will withhold something around 30% and then you need to chase the Yankee government by filing a 1040 NR (non-resident) tax form, claiming the refund.
yep if you are a foreign person, they withhold at 30% on any handpays (over $1200) and you'll have to file a return at the end of the year to get that back.
Similar question Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a similar question... ...what if I win something "sizable" (i.e. a handpay-- hasn't happened yet!) and I don't feel like going through the paperwork. Will they pay me anyway and automatically deduct 30%? I am a U.S. citizen but I'm leery about giving out my SSN and other private financial/identity details. Anyone have experience with this? If I refuse to give out my SSN, will they pay me anyway and withhold the maximum amount? What if I claim to have no ID on me at all? What if I claim to be a foreign citizen without ID? What if I say that my ID is back in my hotel room miles away and I'm too lazy to go get it? Thanks for any responses.
It is called "withholding tax" and it depends entirely on your country's tax agreement with the US government. If your country's tax agreement doesn't have a provision for gambling winnings then the casino will withhold 30% of slot or VP wins over $1200 and poker tournament winnings over, I think its $10,000. You asked specifically about the UK as your example country: the UK's tax agreement does have provisions for gambling winnings won in the USA and so you would not normally be subject to the withholding tax. [NOTE: I say "not normally" because most people (almost all) from the UK won't get taxes withheld, but there are some circumstances where they might]
If you are a US taxpayer and you don't want to give them any of your info they will just withhold some of the winnings (I believe the amount varies from 20-30% depending on certain circumstances) If you don't have your ID they will hold your entire winnings at the casino cage under your name and you then have to go get your ID and come back later to claim your winnings.
