I saw this quote in another thread.

What this CEO does not make sense to me.

Don't people gamble more when intoxicated? Would't a casino receive a return on the cost of the free drinks?

I think that gambling while drinking, I am less likely to walk away with my winnings or from a cold slot. That doesn't translate to more money bet overall in my case. I think they will try to cut back using problem gaming as they excuse even though it will clearly be about their bottom line. There are alot of markets where they can't serve free drinks and they still do a lot of business. But they are crazy if they think that they won't permanently hurt their Vegas casino revenues charging for drinks. I can gamble and pay for drinks at home, dammit!

We play a lot of video poker, and the worst thing we do is "maybe" have an occasional bloody mary at a morning VP session. Other than that, we do not partake in all of that free drink service. That's a sure way to be separated from your casino money.

No more free drinks means fewer expenses to the bottom line. Loveman sounds pretty focused on reducing his debt. I, for one, would not be happy if they cut out the free drinks. :Þ

I NEVER drink while I'm gambling, mostly because I am such a light weight and I turn into Cpt. Jack Sparrow after a Jack & Coke, and because I almost always head to a casino on a weekend night and drive home after midnight. I would never have a drink if I was getting behind the wheel with people traveling with me.

I'm afraid that Ms. Gecko and I drink like fishes when gambling. Undoubtedly, it sometimes causes us to stick around a losing table longer than we would have otherwise. At other times, it helps give us the courage to bet more when doing well. All-in-all it probably averages out, but always makes the experience a lot more fun. We definitely don't drive when drinking even a little, so that's not an issue.

Do away with free booze, eradicate 3:2 BJ everywhere, and maybe eliminate room offers and other comps, and we're history.

I am always the driver to local casinos so I never drink and gamble. The only time I have done so is the time I was in Vegas nine years ago. And yes, I felt much more reckless with a few cocktails in me and made a few visits to the ATM. This time I am doing the envelope method of financial control.

I tend to focus more when drinking so if gambling i will focus more on the action.

The only place i play for the social aspect is craps. i dont bet much but love the party atmosphere so i dont need to pay attention as close. plus i am happy when I win and will pocket that winning in a second.

I think they should do something to liven up the black jack tables. they are usually like a morgue. it reminds me of riding the city bus. you can be drunk and partying like mad but as soon as you get in a sense of dread comes over you so you just sit there sullen.

This is taking into account they have loud music and half naked dealers.

I think they alook at indian casinos without booze and do the math from there and think it will work in vegas. of course it will work if yours is the only game in town but never in vegas.

I say we demand more booze!! who is with me!!

    Sure I do.

As to what Loveman said, I would like to see that in context.

Was that just a personal thought, which could be different than a business thought?

Did he want to do that, but would never try it?

What did the statement REALLY mean. Sadly, we often take a few words and turn into whatever we want.

This is a good reason we have trouble electing good people. (not a political statement.. I did not say one ___ is better than another ___, nor was I referring to anyone that did or did not get elected).

I don't see what he is saying is wrong. Obviously CEO's want to cut costs and drive profit.

I hope he is smart enough to surround himself with Vice Presidents who will stop him from going that route. Otherwise the golden parachute may have to activate prematurely and at a depressed stock price.

If you put it in to full context then basically comes out like this:

The article is about how two of the top five donors to the republican campaign are casino operators (Wynn and Adelson) and its basically a spin to say that its OK if the casino industry wants to donate money to politicians.

So the article pretty much starts off asking: is it OK that these big casino owners want to donate money to the republicans?

So her initial statement is that no, its ok: they make a lot of money, they create a lot of jobs and even the state governments have their hands in gambling through lotteries.

She then addresses what would be the most likely argument that somebody opposed to this would have: aren't casinos just big money grubbing machines designed to suck every last penny out of your pocket?

From that, she then brings up that the most common negative perception of the casino industry is Atlantic City where the casinos go after the poorer classes, are surrounded by pawn shops and ply their customers with free alcohol, all designed and orchestrated to milk you out of your money.

And thats where the Gary Loveman part comes in. She wraps it up by saying its not true and the casino bosses aren't like that, that here is Gary Loveman, CEO of Caesars, and his own personal views are that all he wants to do is treat everybody fairly and that he would even rather not serve free drinks to people playing, just that they have to because everybody else is doing it.

So thats the "in a nutshell" version, the full article is at: Financial Times Article

The first thing to point out here is: its not even a direct quote. In the article it is worded as "And men such as Loveman say..." which doesn't mean Gary Loveman ever said this, or is even thinking it, just that men "like" him have said it.

And secondly I would say its just a spin piece. Basically, somebody probably raised a stink that the republicans were getting massive donations from casino owners and because some people might find that shady the point of this article is to say that its not shady and that its OK because they are nice guys, like Gary Loveman, who are just watching out for you.

The cutting-out of free drinks in Las Vegas will work only if everyone does it. As long as there is competition, it will not happen.

Think of what would happen if all of a sudden CET would quit serving free drinks? Customers would rush to MGM and Boyd and ...

No more free drinks would end my trips to Vegas. I am not into gambling to win money, it is a form of entertainment and my wife and I usually lose our entire bankroll (no biggie that's what its there for) but have hedged our bet with he cost of the many drinks we consume. I have local casinos in Florida I do not go to because I have to pay to gamble and pay to drink... double loss. This would be a bad move for the casinos and Vegas. We may not gamble a ton but we blow thousands shopping and dining and that revenue would be gone.
