We were in Las Vegas April 2011 for a daughter's wedding and were staying at Main Street Station. Went to the Orleans to meet some family that live local for lunch and was completely suprised at the whole Rockabilly scene taking place that weekend. From the 50's-style clothes, hair do's, hotrods and music. People from all over the world taking part. Any Rockabilly weekend fans want to share their experiance? Aw234 Gary
I've not been to Viva yet, but I hope to go soon. A lot of photographers do awesome shoots that weekend. All my MUAH people said its amazing. April 2013, hopefully!
It's a fabulous weekend at the Orleans (always Easter weekend) ~ great people-watching, cool music and lots to see and do!
My girlfriend and I stumbled upon Viva Las Vegas 13. We often stay at the Orleans during our trip, but they were completely booked until Sunday, so we booked South Point for Saturday night and checked into the Orleans Sunday morning when the rockabilly festival was finishing up. We had so much fun checking out the people and the cars that we planned this year's trip to coincide with the festival and got tickets for the Saturday car show. Check out my girlfriend's writeup of it at http://notjustforgamblers.com/viva-las-vegas-car-show/ including a few pictures I took at the show.
Ms Gecko and I enjoyed a veritable parade of Rockabilly's at the Orleans in April, which was the first time I even heard of them. Then, while playing BJ at MSS a day or two later, the girl next to us said she was in town primarily for Rockabilly. With a note of disbelief, we said something like, "Nooooo – you can't be part of that, you look way too normal. She laughed, pulled her ample hair up and to one side revealing a large completely shaven area laden with tattoos! Hope to be there again next April. Not to highjack the thread, but the Punk Rock Bowlers are quite "entertaining" too!
I stumbled upon it when it was at The Gold Coast, years ago. Peggy Sue + Mary Lou were in attendance, too. I swear I saw Sal Mineo, in black chinos, white sox, black Keds + white Tee shirt. . "What are you rebelling against ?" Marlon Brando : "Whaddya got ?" . I watched a couple of the bands play. They all sounded the same . . I got the idea that they were really LA punk Bands - who threw together a rockabilly set of songs - for a quick pay day. That's what I would have done - back in the day - when I played all over. . It was fun !
Nice site, I enjoy the pics from Rockabilly. We kinda do the samething staying downtown Fri. n Sat. then moving to Orleans Sunday. They dump the rockabilly music in the casino at 10am Monday.
