Rock of Ages coming to the Palazzo in December

Or is it Palazzo?

Saw this on twitter yesterday. Seems like a good choice! I saw the broadway show when it was on tour, and it was a lot of fun, and I'm sure Vegas will make it extremely over the top and more entertaining.

”Rock of Ages,” the long-running Broadway musical directed by Murrieta’s Kristin Hanggi, is coming to The Venetian Las Vegas.
The show will open in December. Exact date, cast and director have not been announced, but the resort has already opened a theme bar for the show, the Bourbon Room.
After performances, cast members will party with audience members in the Bourbon Room, according to the Las Vegas Sun.
“Rock of Ages” is a juke box musical featuring heavy metal hits and power ballads of the 1980s. It is set on the Sunset Strip and based on such clubs as The Whiskey A Go-Go.
A Warner Bros. movie version opens Friday in which an A-list cast that includes Tom Cruise, Alec Baldwin and Catherine Zeta-Jones joins newcomers such as Julianne Hough.
The Venetian hosted a gala screening of the movie in New York City last week with Hough and film director Adam Shankman in attendance. The guest list from the rock world included Julian Lennon and Matchbox 20’s Rob Thomas.
The Venetian is sister resort to the Palazzo. “Rock of Ages” is replacing the Palazzo’s attraction “Jersey Boys,” which recently moved to Paris Las Vegas.
The Venetian’s custom-made, one act version of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Phantom of the Opera” will close Sept. 2.

The movie version with Tom Cruise just belly-flopped this weekend. That should have the Venetian executives sqirming a little....

I saw it about three years ago on Broadway with Constantine Maroulis as the lead, it was pretty awesome. For some strange reason, the film producers decided to cast the non-singing midget Tom Cruise in the lead in an attempt to sell tickets. Cruise made a nice payday, but the movie didn't do well over the weekend, I hope to see it before it is released on DVD.

I think it will be a great show for Vegas as it features rock music from the 1980's and should have a built in audience. Don't stop believing!

 

What's super funny to me is that in the musical, Stacee Jax doesn't really have much of a role - it's not the lead, it's like the #4 male (after Drew, Lonny & Dennis.....You could debate he would be #2 or 3, but not in my opinion) But for the movie, they keep promoting Tom Cruise. Ah well. I've read funny reviews of the movie - I'll see it on Dvd at some point (but that's more because I don't see any movie in a theater than an aspersion on this particular film....) If I hadn't seen the touring show locally, I'd see it in Vegas. But for me, as much as I enjoyed the musical, it's not the sort of thing I feel compelled to see over and over again....

 

remembering back to the show we will rock you, which was a vehicle for the music of queen. it was really not high level theater, and therefore perfect for las vegas.

rock of ages seems made for las vegas...those who want to look down their nose at the show, on many legitimate levels, can do so and make themselves happy. those who want to have some fun without having to think a whole lot, can do that and be happy too.

i might go to the movie just to laugh at tom cruise.

one of the reviews i read said that tom and alec baldwin actually made the movie, with the over the top and probably miscast performances, but the trouble was that the movie was not about their characters, and those who it was about were not very good, and they were supposed to be deep characters, rather than caricatures.

 

The film has very little to do with what the stage production is like. I don't see execs worrying at all... ROA on Broadway was a fantastic show and in terms of entertainment value, it's going to go well in Vegas.

What the movie lacked was the camp, self-aware, '80s-love that the stage show had. The film just tried too hard and it did so with actors who were severely miscast in their roles.

I'm going to stick my neck out and assume, possibly incorrectly, that the vast majority of Vegas-goers are unaware of the history of this show and will mind-link it with the movie flop instead. Even the Broadway production of XANADU felt the need to state in it's advertisement "this isn't that awful 80s movie".

 

Yes, I saw it too, and Stacee isn't important. (I haven't seen the movie yet). I think all glammed up and stuff it'll be good for Vegas. It's also a good musical that everyone can enjoy. Not just women, or showtune fanatics, it's good for everyone.

Haha I'll probably go to the movie. First time I saw the trailer, Tom Cruise seemed like a glaringly bad choice. It's also a very highly acclaimed musical.

I agree. I LOVED the Queen show they had at Paris. I think this will fill a similar hole.

 

I took my husband for our anniversary and he enjoyed it. But I take him to musicals all the time so he's used to it. But he loved Mamma Mia when we saw it in Vegas. And he really liked Chicago. So yes, straight men can & do enjoy musical theater too

 

True, but I mean you probably wouldn't have to drag a guy to Rock of Ages. Minus my gay friends, I'd have to literally drag a guy to see Mamma Mia LOL!

I'm a gay guy and Mamma Mia was nearly the most awful two-hours of my life. CATS, too.

 

I saw Cats when I was 12, so I can be forgiven that, right? (yes, I loved it, Was blown away years later by an incredibly sultry version of Macavity done by Sarah Brightman in concert.....).

so, last night was our 3oth wedding anniversary. guy, married to a woman, just for those who are categorizing.

after a couple of half price drinks and appetizers at happy hour, seemed like a good idea to go see rock of ages, so we did. it was corny, and entertaining, and just some simple entertainment.

music was fun, russell brand stole the show in our book, and the characters of alec baldwin and tom cruise were just so over the top that it leads me to assume that those two actors are laughing all the way to the bank, we can make fun of them all we want, as long as they get paid.

 

The wife and I went to the Bourbon Room on opening night. That place is a blast. If you're a thirty- or forty-something looking for a fun place to dance, it's a great option.

 

I haven't seen it on Broadway or in the theater, but I would probably see in in Vegas. I, too, was among the minority who loved We Will Rock You. The singers were incredibly talented and did the best they could with a pretty poor script. The music alone was worth going to hear. In fact, two of the leads were just on The Voice -- Tony was one of the finalists, and his wife, who was amazing as Scaramouche (sp?), was there supporting him as she awaited the birth of their child.
