No prices on menus!

What is it with menus having no prices on them on restaurant websites for Las Vegas??

I'm not rich but I can afford to eat at nice places, I just want to know if I should be expecting a $50 check or a $500 check. I tend to use cash only in Vegas so I don't want to get caught short.

My rule of thumb is: if I have to ask, I probably can't afford it!

How about going to a restaurant that has a list of special cocktails without prices? No thanks, I don't want a $15 martini with 6 ingredients.

And for my final pet peeve, the server interrupting my dinner conversation to recite the daily specials without pricing. Print it out for goodness sakes and let me look at it on my own time! Grilled free range chicken in a balsamic port wine reduction with a chiffonade of organic hydroponic basil infused with a garlic and fresh oregano imported olive oil served with maytag blue cheese smashed heirloom potatoes with locally-sourced harcortes vertes topped with a farm raised, sustsinably grown blue point oyster, coated in panko bread crumbs and fried in trans fat free safflower oil. And our second special is..........

 

yelp.com is a good resource. people often list prices and yelp has $$$ as a way to rate. $ cheap. $$$$ not cheap.

 

They do it so they can change prices and not have to update the website - that's what I've been told when I asked in the past (we can update our website at work on a daily basis, it's not that hard, but whatever....). It bugs me too - but as noted, there are now other resources online, like Yelp, to try to find out a price. Many Yelp reviews will give specific prices on dishes ordered, too. Zagat is another trusty resource for price range - they're very standardized in their review structure.

 

Ah, someone from I.T couldn't be bothered doing a job so gave that excuse to customer service. All they need to do is upload a new PDF file - surely they have to create new menus for the shops anyway? Their art department could upload the files. Or their content management system could even create the PDF dynamically.

Bit of a rant there. I can't stand laziness in people.

I guess for small restaurants it sort of makes sense- profit margin is thin, they might not have personnel with time or ability to work on a website, or money to have one professionally maintained. But I do think it's changing (a few years ago, it was Second Street Grill downtown who didn't have a menu online at all - now they do, so things are improving)

 

Don't think many restaurants have IT departments.

But its also likely a lag time issue. If you want to raise prices for tonights service, then not only do you have to get that PDF created and on the site right away, but anyone who checked it yesterday could complain. So what do you do? Have two menus up with effective dates in advance of a change? Do monthly menus with expiry dates? Put up small print that says prices are subject to change?

Yeah, its inconvenient. But its also not hard to figure out the general price range of a restaurant without the menu.

 

The restaurants are all part of casino websites, which will be dynamically content managed and maintained by either the I.T department or possibly an external agency.

 

Also a non-issue IMHO. Prices aren't likely to change by more than 20% either way at once and you just put a disclaimer on the menu saying online prices subject to change.

Someone could take a printed menu home and then moan that it's out of date. People are more likely to complain about a dish being discontinued than the price changing.

Creating the PDF is a doddle. The people doing the artwork for the menus to be printed will more than likely have a high resolution PDF created already that can be uploaded, or a content management system can create a PDF automatically from database content.

 

Oh, then they must have done it just to annoy you.

i have a related peeve, mostly related to any of the harrahs related restaurants. in the profile of the restaurant, they give an average ticket price. on further review, there may be one or none of the entrees, alone, that are at or below that quoted average ticket.

 

That's also the conclusion I have come to *

No price....no visit from me....no problem....many other establishments to choose from.

 

I don't mind spending money on good food. I come to Las Vegas because I can't get good food where I live. I don't have a upper limit that I will spend. I just want to know what the prices are. I don't make reservation anywhere that does not list prices. I will ask to see a menu when I am walking by a restaurant that does not list prices on line. I usually already have plans, but will keep the restaurants in mind for the next trip if I remember.

Ditto on this one. I've never seen an even somewhat close average price on CET restaurants. My suggestion if you look at their average price add 50% you might be closer for a meal. Also, check their actual menus for prices.

 

there's no prices on the Mansion restaurant menu even when you're there. Just adds to the suspense of the meal!

 

I guess when staying there u are not so concearned about meal costs, they can only charge so much for food. The wine list could however bring a little supprise 4 ya.

 

Yeah there are prices on the wine list. Very high ones.
