My last few trips I have been nervous about the people I get on the elevator with. This was never a problem before and it's usually only after midnight. It's never the younger crowd, but mostly older guys if there is 2 or 3 of them. I am a 68 year old female, and have always felt safe in Vegas by myself. Twice I have gotten off the elevator because I felt uncomfortable. Does anyone else have this problem?

I would imagine this is mainly a female problem and would be relevant in any city.. I would carry pepper spray any where if I was a female. I also try not to carry or flash too much cash because that could attract the wrong crowd as well.

Do you stay at a hotel that checks key cards before getting on elevators? I was watching a show on the travel channel one night and they were going over safety measures on subjects just like this. The host said to always be the last person to push what floor button you are getting off at so everyone else has already chosen theirs. Yes I'm getting older and sometimes worry too about these things.

If you dont feel safe then waiting for another elevator is prudent. Late at night you could ask security to escort you to your room. Follow your instict - the only harm is it takes you a little longer to reach your room.

Thanks sarah9nascar - that is a good tip on waiting to push your floor button until last - I'm one of those Vegas middle of the night players who is uber aware of my surroundings when heading to the elevator - most of the places I stay you have to show your room card to security before entering the elevator, but not all places do this, and even then, this tip is one I will start using when getting on the elevator.

I'm a big guy and never give it a second thought. But, I have stayed at hotels that you just show a room card and others where they actually have to swipe the card to make sure it is still a valid room card key before you can get on the elevator.

If I was that sort of person and knew the procedure, I would just hold on to an old room card if I knew they didn't swipe it.

Jeez, I'm not trying to scare the alone females on the board, just mentioning things that can happen. Late at night it just pays to be cautious. My wife is fearless, but she has waited for a second elevator when she was alone at 2 AM.

The D doesn't check for room keys. When I used to drink, things like this never bothered me, but now I am more cautious about a lot of things. I think if I would win a lot of money, I would have security go up with me.

There are a number of things you can do for your safety. If you don't feel comfortable, get out of the elevator and say that you forgot something, or that you will take the next elevator. No explanation is really needed, if you don't feel comfortable then just get out any time you have a strange feeling.

If you and someone else happen to have rooms on the same floor, let the other person go first so you are the one following him, not the other way around. If he tries to get you to go first, tell him that for safety sake you want him to lead the way. But if your spidey sense is still tingling, then press another floor and come back to your floor later, probably best to wait a few minutes before you go to your room just in case the other person is still hanging around.

As others have mentioned, if the elevator requires your room key then always wait until the other person presses his/her floor using their own key card. If they don't and wait for you to use your card then get out of the elevator and wait for the next one. While some people piggyback because they either lost their card or they are staying with a group and don't have their own room key card you are not under any obligation to help the other person get up to his or her room. This also ensures that the other person is a valid guest and isn't there to follow you up to your floor or room.

This can be any time of the day or night, a creep can appear at any time of the day or night.

I'm a guy and in elevators I usually try to go first so the other person (usually female) doesn't feel uncomfortable that I'm getting off on the same floor. One time I got off the same time as a someone else. We walked down the corridor and stopped exactly at the same time. Turned out we had rooms right across each other so we had a good laugh that we were following each other to our rooms.

Always good to practice safety and be aware of your surroundings when you travel. No telling when a bad guy could be following you.

It usually isn't a problem for me as most of the time I am with my husband and I feel safer then. However, I did feel like that on our December 2012 trip. Several things that happened or that we heard about within the first 12 hours after landing really raised my anxiety levels, so my guard was up just about constantly for the entire week, and especially in the elevators after riding one with a very creepy looking guy. Not a good feeling..

    I have the opposite problem.

If i am walking down the street, never fails that a lady will pop out from a side street in front of me and then look over her shoulder at me like i am going to attack her or something. Makes me honestly uncomfortable, i mean, i am just minding my own business.

Once at the Rio,A lady gets off in front of me and we walk down the looong hallway..It got to be uncomfortable for me being a guy.I make a joke like I'm not stalking you,my room is at the end..turns out hers was also across from mine..She made a reply back like she wasn't worried..Guess she sized me up in the elevator or had mace ready..
But what are the odds of neighbors on same floor getting on same elevator same exact time going back to thier rooms??
Just another Vegas thing/memory I seem to accumulate over the years..

One thing that totally creeps me out is being followed!

If there are others waiting for an elevator who look creepy I'll let them board and take the next one.

I go to the casino late at night by myself while my husband stays in the room. I have never been creeped out on an elevator. I have been creeped out at the Flamingo Casino by myself. So much that I left the casino and went back to the room. One guy was drunk and wouldn't leave me alone and I went to the other side of the casino. Then two young workers with maintenance uniforms from Flamingo started staring me up and down. Then one went behind me as I was playing a slot machine and growled in my ear and smiled. F***er - I guess he thought I was a cougar. After that I gave up -- of course I wasn't winning either. I like to sit at the slot or VP machine enjoy a drink and be left alone.

I had never heard of this story but I have just read up on it and as you say it is a fascinating story. It is weird watching her behaviour on the cctv footage and given the evidence and her history you can certainly draw different conclusions from it.

There've been some good tips here. I don't think you're wrong at all to be vigilant these days.

What exactly is it that someone would be afraid of? Someone attacking you on the elevator? Following you to your room? I have absolutely zero idea if there's any sort of crime occuring but I would think that no one is stupid enough to try anything as chances of not getting caught are extremely slim due to cameras and people being everywhere.

For the OP, I would think that it's peace of mind the you want after a certain time, based on the hotel you are staying at. If I were you, I would not wish to take any chances, go to the front desk or to the concierge or anyone operating at reception, and ask to be escorted to your room. In this way, you shouldn't have to worry at all about whether anyone gets in the elevator or not.

Here's an idea. Everybody's got their phone with them, right? Even if you're on the top floor at the end of the hallway, it only takes less than 5 minutes from the first floor to get to your room once you're actually on the elevator. Why not just make a call to somebody or even fake being on a call. You could even pretend to be telling someone that "you'll see them in the room in a minute". I would think that this should be a deterrent against someone attacking you. It sounds very elementary and simple, but, I would think this would be the route I would take if I was being vigilant about such scenarios.
