I stayed at mirage
The high limit room is the only way to go
Double deck blackjack
Dealer stands on s17
Double after splits permitted.

Treasure island has the same game but at 25 minimum but those tables are usually full
Hard to make money on a full table but good if you are comp hawking.

Downtown has gone to $hit
Benny and Jack Binion would roll over in their grave if they saw 6 deck shoes with 6 to 5 payouts on blackjack
Just close already will you please. You are taking up historic space you clearly do not deserve.

What were the minimums in the high limit room at the Mirage?

 

Hmmm... well, if those were your only downtown stops, then I certainly understand your point of view.
Next time, I recommend that you try the two-deck games at the El Cortez, the Plaza, Golden Gate & 'theD'... all H17, but they allow DAS... $5, $25, $25 & $50 minimums, respectively.
Nugget did have a $25 (weekday, early afternoon) 6 or 8 deck shoe that was 3:2, S17, DAS, RSA & LS... not sure if that game is still available... if it is, it's the only S17 game downtown.

All three Boyd properties offer plenty of $5, 3:2 H17 double-deck pitch, but no DAS permitted.

Gold Coast & Orleans each have the same Boyd $5 game, but they allow DAS.

Aria actually had $50 tables on the main floor during the day that were double-deck and S17. Definitely DAS, the only rule I'm not positive about was surrender was because it didn't come up (I don't know the surrender rules well enough to implement them, especially after a few drinks, so I wind up either ignoring it completely, or going overboard). They went up to $100 in the evening, but there were plenty of playable $50 tables and usually some $25 tables too. What amazed me the most was the evening where there were $25 3:2 tables literally across the pit from $25 6:5 tables; the 6:5 tables were full, while the 3:2 tables were empty.

 

That just goes to show you that most people are clueless. Hopefully, you walked by those $25 6:5 tables and loudly exclaimed "Why would I play 6:5 when I can play 3:2!" so that all of the clueless players at the 6:5 table could hear it.

 

The problem is that lots of people just don't understand the difference. I have friends who frequent Vegas, play blackjack, and still need it to be explained to them.

 

This really annoys me, even someone with basic math skills should be able to grasp that 6:5 odds are worse than 3:2 (or 6:4 if you want to simplify it even more). A guy was playing $10 6:5 BJ at NYNY last weekend but betting at least $50 per hand and I asked why he didn't move to the $25 min table to take advantage of 3:2 and he didn't seem fussed.

It wont be long until $25 limits are all 6:5. And lower limits go even money. I mean if you had a product and you kept raising "the price" and people kept crowding around your table, wouldn't you? I am sure you will always be able to find real blackjack at the $100 level, but I am not a High Roller and basically just crossed blackjack off my list of games. (But i guess I am not so rational since I still play roulette now and again and the house edge there is even worse!)

 

Exactly. A friend of mine runs a restaurant and I analogized it to her like this: if you had the same item on the menu twice, one for $10 and the other for $15, and everyone kept choosing the $15 option, would you keep the $10 option?

Thankfully I'm solidly at the $50-$100 level now, but it's truly absurd, and if I was just starting to frequent Vegas I'm not sure I'd continue to play blackjack.

 

I've found that the easiest way to get the clueless to understand is to tell them percentages -
"OK...if you were investing your money in a stock, would you rather have a 20% return or a 50% return? That's the difference between 6:5 backjack and 3:2."
Then break it down to them in the number of blackjacks needed to win an 'extra' bet -
"You need hit 5 blackjacks to win an extra bet in 6:5 (5x20%). You only need 2 blackjacks in 3:2 (2x50%)"

This works pretty well.

The "Yeah, but I hardly ever get blackjacks" argument? Just tell them that the math says they'll average 3 or 4 per hour. Betting $10/hand, they give away $9-to-$12 an hour.
(Three $10 blackjacks @ 6:5 = $36. At 3:2, it's $45. For four, it's $48 versus $60)

 

Most of the Nugget's $10 shoe tables are still 3/2 though, right?

The Aria DD table does not allow surrender. In fact, I am not aware of any Strip DD tables that permit surrender

Yep, I remember thinking the same thing. I also remember thinking that it was just a ploy to keep serious players, and their money, away from the single deck games and there was no way it would ever make its way to the shoe games. Oops.......
