I hrave been thinking about buying a GoPro for about a year and a half now. I am not sure what I would do with it. I have seen some pretty cool video from them though. I don't know what I would do with it. I don't motocross, ski, sky dive, ATV, etc. I guess I would mount it in my car and turn it on when I am driving (lame). I could go with the argument of 'I could save the $400 or so for my next Vegas trip, but I know better than that. I would still find the $400 somewhere else. I bought my son one for his birthday, but he is taking film classes. What else does one do with a GoPro? Who owns one and what do you do with it? Oh yeah, I don't own a drone either. Help talk me into/out of buying one.

Why not get a set of car cameras? Which I don't think are a bad idea given the bs I see on the roads and the lies people tell and the rise in hit and runs.

Otherwise they're very cool. I wouldn't mind one. But, like you, I don't have a lot of uses for them.

I have a dash cam on both my cars.

Always a good idea but go pro isn't the best for this.

I guess I thought of the GoPro for its versatility. I would like to use it for more than recording my boring drive to and from work and various errands around town.

A GoPro is not ideal for a dash cam setup. They are great if your are filming something once for a purpose. However, as a full-time dash cam it is a terrible option. I have the Mini 0803 and it's fantastic.

a dash cam isn't for filming your boring drive to work, it's for running every second you're driving in case something interesting happens or something bad happens and you have a record of it. how often do you see something or something happens and you wish you could rewind and play it again? happens to me every couple of weeks and I'm glad I have it.

you can get a nice Lukas LK-7900 ACE for $239 on Amazon and use the other $161 for a nice dinner out.

Now you have me curious, What happens every couple of weeks to make this worth-while?

I have a go pro. We use for all sorts of things. I take to Jamaica and use to film our snorkeling trips. I set the Tri-pod up and we do our own family photo shoot. Our next trip I am going to mount it on my body and wear while tooling around on a scooter at night in Negril. There are some really crazy and even scary sights to be seen. I have not taken it to Vegas, I really don't see the need for it there.

It is def more of an "action camera" and well suited for that purpose. You dont need to buy the top of the line model unless you are super, super serious about what you film. I have the "white" edition, its great. Don't get the bottom tier one either, it lacks some options you will likely need.

There are a ton of videos on YouTube of truck drivers who use them as Shifter does. Some of the wreckage footage is amazing. I watched one today where a car tries to pass on the far right lane and doesn't realize the traffic is stopped. Hit a tractor trailer in the rear. The car literally exploded all over the road.

Sorry... but a GoPro is just a video camera. Most smart phones can do the same thing, but without a good mount.

Unless you have a REAL USE for it, there is no reason to buy it.

Smartphone can't take the sand and water and extreme use that a GoPro can. They were designed for abuse and I agree they are not for everyone and I often use one of my other cameras when its more applicable. Another thing the GoPro has going for it is the accessories.

Maybe I'm a sucker but GoPro video always seems crisper than any other (consumer level) video to me, and it nearly convinced me to buy one a while back. But then reading about it, it seemed that fisheye effect is hard to get rid of and I don't think I'd like that on everything I did. It also sounds a little cumbersome to shoot still photos with one.

Here's one of the videos that made me want one so bad:

I have one and used it in Utah and Wyoming a couple months ago. Fantastic. I have a helmet mount, head mount, handlebar mount, chest mount, wrist mount. The HD video quality is great. Much better than I've shot with an IP 6+ and Samsung G6. I've never used it on my dash.

All of these so far are great responses! Thank you. Just some more info. IF I was to get one, it would be the Hero 4 Silver with some accessories. I know that the quality of the video is fantastic. Still the question is how do I justify this purchase? Right now, I think I will leave my options open. To buy or not to buy?

I kicked it around for at least a year. Went on a vac and wished I had it while I was there so bought one as soon as I got home.

Captainron, where did you go on vacation and what made you wish you had one? Just curious.

I debated about the GoPro, but actually opted for the S6 which produces really nice video and has the 4K option.
For me the S6 made more sense as its always with me and able to capture pictures and video. Great for vacations (but still carry a camera).
Although the GoPro takes great video I wouldn't really use it for its intended purpose.

Jamaica mon! My son and I do a lot of snorkeling, so we really wished we had it with us. Then we were walking the cliffs and my daughter dropped my regular camera and damaged the little telephoto thing that goes in and out. Its just a rough environment for a regular camera. The GoPro is truly an action camera and its built tough.

seeing this thread, i have both a dash cam and gopro...this is my take on it

last year i won a nice chunk of money and instead of giving it all back to the casino right away, I decided to treat myself to a lil shopping spree...I picked up the gopro Hero 3 black i think it was. and a bunch of accessories to go with it. spend around $550 on all the stuff. i actually bought it as i was planning to film myself doing the stratospheres skyjump which i havent been to still. so the gopro sat and sat forever untouched. I have used it 2 times once in my yard and once on my dash drive home...for a car dash cam, the battery life sucks with HD recording so you would need to put a hole in the protective case to keep it charged, using the suction cup on my dash it bounced around and made the video a lil shakey., other than that i dont use the camera, it does wonderful HD recording though

I decided I was going to do a HD DVR dashcam...searching around I grabbed a cheap 2 camera system from eBay $49 shipped, ill try it, if not its only $50...so I order a 250gb sd card as i want to make sure i have enough room to film for a decent drive if i need to. what i didnt pay attention to is that it says the camera I bought only supports to a 32gb card...i got the cam a few days ago, put a 64gb card in i had available and wont work...my 250gb card comes in and I try that, it works, 49hours of continuous recording, YAY

so I just done a quick install yesterday to test it out, have to set the date on it and figure the settings out but for $50 it pretty decent, had some glare on the windshield from my painted dash but still nice quality for a cheap price, I may go install it fully later and maybe even hook the 2nd rear camera up. also the main camera rotates to look in the car or outside....also the video displayed on the dvr screen is not great quality but it records nice video

few still shots yesterday at 5:30pm and night time at 3am this morning

ill fix the glare issues and it should be excellent
