Does anyone use a Total Rewards credit card on a regular basis? If so, does that help with getting room comps by chance or is the free room offers only good for actual casino play?

I have used one regularly for years and it does not help at all with offers. But it does generate total reward credits that you can apply to room costs at CET properties

We use our Total Rewards credit card to amass Reward Credits to offset expenses for our trips. Last year we had many a great meal and paid for our one night that was not comped with Reward Credits. Also if you spend $5,000 with it annually you will maintain Platinum status. Spend $10,000 and you get perk that allows you to use Diamond Lines, all pools.

Offers are tied to actual play.

I also use it.....maybe not as religiously as I should but the RC's I rack up usually pays for my meals while I'm there.

I use it regularly now because I closed my other travel rewards credit card because of the annual fee (Capital One Venture) and don't want to hurt my credit by opening a new one just yet. It doesn't get you a high amount of rewards, just 1 reward per dollar spent. But it helps with food and paying for rooms in Vegas/other properties they have. I've only used it for a room in Reno. I plan on using some for a restauant/buffet this next trip - most likely Bacchanal.

Make sure to pay it off every month so you don't accrue interest!

They are also giving double reward credits on all purchases made through late in August. You do have to activate in order to get the bonus credits.

Can someone explain the math for earning comps? For every dollar spent you earn ____. (If it's that straight forward).

For every dollar spent you earn 1 reward credit. Some things like gas and groceries earn 2x credits. When you use it at a Caesers property you earn 5x credit. Reward credits on the other hand are 100 points = $1. In other words, if you have 10,000 reward credits, you have $100 credit available.

Log into your Total Rewards account and there is a link to activate the bonus. I received a flyer in the mail about the bonus. If you don't see it on the site I can look at my flyer when I get home and let you know what it is.

As other posters have said, with the TR credit card it's generally $1 spent = 1 RC. 100 RCs = a dollar in comps. So it's pretty easy to figure out how much you're getting in comps on any purchase--just put a decimal point in.

Example: we got some new windows that cost $3000. I charged it to the TR credit card and said to myself, well, there's $30.00 I can spend at Gordon Ramsay BurGR. It made the pain of spending $3000 go away, at least a little bit.

Now, the math totally does not work if you don't pay off the card every month!

This thread reminds me how sad I am that this isn't available in Canada. I am looking for a new day-to-day credit card and this would be perfect. Maybe one day

I got one simply because I figured I would be able to use the credits while visiting Vegas. Why not? No better or worse than most other cc benefits.

I used to have that card when it was with Bank of America. But I switched to the Southwest Visa. Reward cards are pretty even in how they work, they "give back" about 1% as a base, with extra bonuses and such as stated above. So if you take advantage of the bonuses, you can get around 1.5-2% back in one form or another. I decided I would rather use that towards flights than resort fees or meals. Matter of preference.

And I can't stress enough, as was stated above: If you are going to use the card a lot in order to accrue points, you need to pay the card off every month! Otherwise, you will pay more in interest than you receive back. If you pay $50 in interest, that means you would have to have put $5000 on the card to break even. And if you put that much on the card, I can guaran-damn-tee you'll pay more than $50 interest.

OK, end rant. Sorry, personal finance and money management is a bugaboo of mine. Yet here I am about to make my 17th trip to Vegas...

I've had both cards. One major difference is SW has a $99 annual fee. No fee with TR visa. SW is good initially for the 50,000 miles with new card. After I've used the 50,000 I cancel the card. My wife then applies and we get another 50,000 miles. To be fair, the $99 fee gets you 6,000 miles.
I keep the TR visa(no fee) so my points never expire.
