    Hi all:

Got a mailer the other day for some free nights at Ellis Island. I am assuming that it is a simple Super 8. Has anyone stayed? What should I expect? I am just looking for a one night crash prior to leaving for the airport and some Ellis Island brews.

    Thanks!

    Mike

Ellis Island bought the joint last year or so to do just what they did with you. They wanted to be able to COMP rooms. I heard they did some remodeling, but havent seen photos. I would give it a shot if they offered me COMP rooms for sure. ITs a short walk to the strip and def worth a free room with cheap food and drink and decent gambling next door. Let us know if you give it a try.
You can always say you stayed at the Worlds largest SUPER 8 if nothing else! haha

I don't want to poop on your parade ok. You know how when someone is telling someone to go to Ellis Island and have one of the steak specials and they always warn that person the people within Ellis Island are kinda seedy? Well the people that stay at the motel 8 are like 400x more seedy than the patrons in the casino. I wouldn't do it. You can get a room at MonteCarlo or luxor for 30-40 bucks a night if you look for discounts. I would do that rather than stay at the motel 8. My 2c. (we go to Ellis Island every trip to get the king cut prime rib so I am not a stuck up snob, just giving you a heads up.)

We stayed there one night several years ago because our flight on USAirways was cancelled and that's where they put us. For one night, it was fine. It was a tiny room though. There were lots of Southwest employees there while we were there.

Thats about all I have heard is that there are a lot of airline employees there. We even saw a few while waiting for a cab a couple years ago.

I did end up booking two nights (I was offered three). I also had $200 in free play or promo chips and two free entrees. It was worth it for that alone. We might check in and check it out and move on from there if we need something else. It is worth a shot given the price.

I've seen trip reports and pics from different people on different boards and it looks fine. Clean. Simple. In the past, it wasn't that popular with message board types because they didn't comp rooms, the prices of the rooms weren't terribly competitive and it's not going to help your street cred to stay there. It was a place you stayed if your dates were expensive, you couldn't get a comp or a better price for a particular night or you were using it as a strategic base and the laundry facilities, easy parking etc made it worth it. If they're going to be doing offers...the chances of me staying there are going up.

I had a few beers in the Ellis Island brewpub on my last Vegas trip and it ended up being hilariously bad because it was karaoke night. You haven't lived until you've listened to an 85 year old toothless Elvis impersonator drunkenly slur his way through "Viva Las Vegas". The Super 8 looked like the kind of place you crash at when you've been thrown out of the house by your meth-dealing significant other.

I liked room 3045. I liked coffee in the foyer. I liked a coin laundry and did wifi while I used it. I liked easy access to Ellis Island for food. I liked a 24 hour open and heated pool. Easy bus access (right across the street) to the airport.

I was checking rates on Vegas.com and their rooms are more expensive than Luxor, Excalibur, Paris, Bally, Monte Carlo, Circus Circus, and a few others. That's just wrong being off strip and a Super 8. I think their rate was $88/night in the late September timeframe. I wouldn't stay there even if it's free. I've ate at Ellis Island a couple times. The walk to the Strip is ok but I wouldn't want to walk by myself late at night over there.

Clearly this is not the place for everyone. But their rates are not as you report, Perry. In general, they come in cheaper than the hotels you mention. Perhaps you are forgetting that at Excalibur a $35 rate is really a $63 rate and at Circus Circus a $35 rate is a $57.40 rate, while at the Super 8 at Koval it is a $38 rate.
It does depend on how many nights you book.
One night will be higher there than three. And if you book directly with Super 8, the cheapest rates may not have the same cancelation rules as booking on a discounter site.
On the other hand, booking directly with a Super 8 earns Wyndham Points good for future bookings. It really depends on how fussy you are about the rooms and how lucky you get where you stay.
Orleans is very consistent on comfortable, clean rooms, but the Monte Carlo I stayed in last was scruffier than any time I stayed up at Super 8 on Koval.
That room number 3045 was recommended a couple of years ago as the room where the manager sent his family.
Another off strip property which is pretty reasonable is the Gold Coast if you have a Player's Card and use B Connected booking.

Here is an end of the month search using booking.com http://www.booking.com/hotel/us/super-8-motel-ellis-island-casino.html?sid=fbdd17ace11030067cc8988bfa2af6c3;dcid=1;checkin=2015-09-25;checkout=2015-09-30;dist=0;group_adults=2;srfid=b13c59a0afc9af948f8d7d31f336d0b934699770X9;type=total;ucfs=1&

The last five nights in September average $60 total with taxes and resort fees at Koval Super 8.
Circus Circus would be double that price.
The other places Perry mentions would be more expensive than that.
Here is a great link to keep with favorites on your computer to check resort fees. They are going up.
    https://www.vegas.com/incl/resortfees.html

Even Circus Circus is now ridiculous.

At any rate the OP is comped.

That end of September Perry mentioned is a tough weekend. Life is Beautiful has elevated the Downtown prices and in some cases that bleeds out into other venues. But booked now, there are still some deals.
For a one nighter before going home (likely to be little time spent in the room) Ellis seems like a good bet. Oh, and they do have a free shuttle to the airport although I generally use the 108 because it is right across the street, I already have a bus pass, and I don't need to tip.

The walk at night can intimidate some folks. I've done it at 2 AM and not felt bothered. It depends on how comfortable you are off strip, but it is not like the neighborhood near the Stratosphere . I don't much like it in the daytime in August with luggage. I was sorry that the shuttle from the Orleans quit Bally's as there stop. It was very close to Ellis Island.

Earlier in the evening a walk to the middle of Bally's will get you a free shuttle to the Rio and from there to Harrah's, and it will deliver you back. The 202 picks up across the street on Flamingo, not far. Also, it is not much of a walk to the ferris wheel end of that new Linq CET walkway.

But again, for an OP who just wants decent food and some beers and an easy crash the last night before the plane, and has a free night to see what the place is like, I think it is an easy pick.

I stayed there some years ago. I thought it was adequate and they had coffee and cappucino. machine. They also had a shuttle to the AP. I have never had any trouble with the walk and it actually has improved over time. I used to stay at Terribles and the Tuscany and Bally's a lot and made that walk to the Ellis many times.

I will argue the "seedy people" part of your post. These are just regular folks many if not mostly locals. I will agree there are better places to stay if they
are available but it's not the worst hotel to choose from.

Well, I'd like to know where folks are getting these Monte Carlo nights for 30-40 bucks just by looking at discounts. I can't get in that cheaply on any of my dates in September and November. Maybe in August when room rates plummet.
There is the challenge. Offer the proof with an example and source of the discount.
The OP is comped. So, even with such a deal staying at the Super 8 gives him $70 more dollars to play at Ellis Island.
But I'm rarely comped other than downtown or a free night here and there on MyVegas.

I'd definitely stay there if they comped me.

I'm not seedy, at least I don't think I am.

No Pebbles. You have reached the stage of flower.
I'm not seedy either. Wilted is more accurate.
