Ugh. A thread on this forum called it too. But apparently three died last year too!

 

Heat + drugs + over 100K people and it's really not surprising that somebody passed away.

 

Sad. Bad combination but predictable. Maybe they should move the location to a cooler climate like Seattle?

 

Especially when many of the drugs consumed there raise core body temp. Bad combo.

 

I read somewhere a long time ago if you have 22000 people at an event, any event, the chances of death is 50/50, that why HUGE events always (or nearly always) have deaths.

 

That cannot be correct. That would mean every patron of virtually every NFL and college football game only has a 50% chance of surviving the event?

 

No, he's saying that there is a 50/50 chance of there being one death out of the 22,000 people. Not that all 22,000 have a 50/50 chance of death.

The NFL would never allow the latter, it would cut into merch sales too heavily.

 

That's a little more sensible but I am still skeptical. Even if its a fifty percent chance of just one death, that would mean, what, an average of at least one death at eight NFL stadiums every weekend of the regular season (I'm giving Jacksonville the benefit of the doubt that it actually draws 22k fans for a home game!)? And that figure doesn't even include the college games every weekend. Something tells me a fifty percent chance of at least one death is still an inflated figure

 

I'm sure events like this where drugs can be much more prevalent raise the percentages compared to most sporting events (MLB, NFL, etc.).

A 50/50 chance of 1/22000 dying? That sounds about right to if it's over a 24 hour period. That would be the equivalent of 1 death per day in a town of 44000.

 

Other factors like demographic and conditions, An event with 50000 20 year olds in 110 degree heat with access to alcohol and drugs will have more deaths and an event with 50000 middle ages with no booze or drugs and 70 degree weather would have less

 

The math probably holds true in Oakland!

I worked security at Riverfront Stadium in the 1990s- baseball. It was a given that we would have one death a SEASON at the stadium. With the odds given above there should be several deaths every college football Saturday. Happily, this is not the case!

 

Ok rereading that, yeah I'll say I was tired drunk and misspoke there, combining (synthesizing) at least two (maybe more, I know I'm not citing sources) different ideas. Where the 22 and the 50/50 came from was totally different. (if you care, if you have 22/23 randoms in a room the chances two of them will have a common birthday (month and day) are very close to 50/50) Random and irrelevant yes, but it came to me on the pillow this morning.

Not sure what weight to give the fire breathing dragons though, and the 113 degree heat...... I was probably right 50/50 for a death that weekend
