After many quarterly visits downtown, I'm finally stepping out of my comfort zone and trying two places I've never been. Save for a five minute walk through each casino, both properties are new to me. I'm staying at each next week and was interested in your opinion of them if you've stayed in either.

I've seen a few brief mentions about each here and there but was hoping to pull some thoughts into a single thread.

What did you like about either Plaza or DTG when you visited? Rooms, casino, vibe, staff?

I'll post a few thoughts and photos upon return but was really interested in hearing from any recent visitors to these properties.

    Thanks!

We stayed at the Plaza for 4 nights in Feb. Room was good size and nicely furnished. Bathroom toilet/shower area is horribly tiny. No complaints except for the coffee at the Omaha Bar. Nice sports book and decent VP bartop paytables. If we ever lost our comps at Boyd, I would stay at Plaza.

DTG. We never really stayed there but have been double booked a few times, the last one was May 29. My wife enjoyed the pool and then used the room to shower afterwards. Even though it was 100 degrees, she said the pool was freezing. Maybe that's because it was 100 degrees? Room was nicely furnished and decent size. I had a mixed experience with some of the staff while playing VP at the bar. I'm fairly easy to please, but some of the employees were jerks. I haven't written them off yet and if I get another freeplay offer, I'll give them another shot.

Stayed at the DTG for last year's Superbowl when it was pretty much brand new, it loved it. It's the nicest, cleanest hotel downtown, passing the Nugget which has lost a bit of it's luster. Everyone was really friendly and the service all around was great. Heading back in a few weeks and can't wait.

I haven't stayed at the Plaza in probably 8 years or so, but they were always good to me. The place can seem a bit depressing though. It also stinks in the casino. The rooms were always ok, just a standard Motel 6 style room, no real complaints. The DTG has become my home base for now, but if they start to fall off, the Plaza would be my Plan B.

Stayed at the DTG last week. Very nice. Between DTG and Oscar's at the Plaza, it's very swanky for downtown. At DTG, we stayed in what I think they call the grand tower. It's actually across the street from the casino and next to Hogs and Heifers.

I prefer The Grand over The Plaza for hanging out in. It has better restaurants and bars as well as a good vibe on the weekends. I know The Plaza has been trying - but the improvements (e.g., the food court and beer garden area) seem to have been done on the cheap.

Vibe is important to me. It's hard to explain, but elements of The Grand seem to have a cohesive theme whereas The Plaza has mismatched and disjointed features. It's as though The Plaza is struggling to figure out what it is and where it's headed.

Quick follow up. I spent one night at the Plaza and three nights at Downtown Grand. Had a great experience in both and would gladly stay at either again.

I'm a fairly low roller and with very little play Plaza comped my night. Was not expecting that. That alone might bring me back.

I had no room issues. Room in both properties was very clean and the staff was extremely professional. I wound up extending a day and DTG made it easy.

Dealers were fun and professional at both places.

After years of zigzagging each trip between Golden Nugget and El Cortez, I may have found two new homes for a while.

Stayed at Plaza last year and will be staying 6 nights this year. Pleasant but needs more variety on machines. Wish they. Had a poker room wth dealers. Everyone pleasant there. Avoid the noise from the street by staying in south tower.

It depends upon what you're looking for. Rooms at both are comparable. Both are renovated. Parking is easier at the Plaza since DG's parking is across the street. DG's pool is vastly superior. Plaza's pool is pretty basic. DG's casino is much smaller. I don't play machines so I can't tell you anything about them. Table dealers are good at both, both have $5 min. and 10X odds on craps. Plaza has better BJ, be careful at DG BJ as they have some 6-5 tables and (I believe) only one double deck 3-2 table. Plaza has a much larger and more comfortable sportsboook, although books at both places are run by William Hill. Drink service at the tables seems to be pretty comparable to me.

so, in summary, I would say that if the pool is important to you: DG. Otherwise, I would personally go with whichever has the best deal.

We have a greater variety of machines now. I hope you are pleased when you arrive this year. :)

I fell in love with her when she was the Lady Luck, I'm in like with the Downtown Grand. The rooms are renovated but the buildings are tired. Thin glass lets in a little too much street noise, even from the twelfth floor. West tower has ice and soda machines on alternating floors, some don't work. No coffeemaker in the room, but I read that there is free coffee in the commissary for guests. The casino is small but comfortable; the feel at the only VP bar beats anything the Plaza has to offer. Being removed from the canopy used to be a liability, but now the DTG has the singular advantage of having no late night party noise issues.
