Air B and B rooms

Hipmonk on a search offers up Air B and B rooms.
Here is an alternative I never considered to cover an expensive weekend with no comps.

My September weekend nights with fees would be $90 total for both Friday and Saturday.

This was for a private bedroom in a complex just off Maryland and near Flamingo. The host recommended a car but the 109 bus was not very far away.
In the complex was a basketball court, a Jacuzzi, pool and a sauna and a laundry. The renting included a private bath and shared a kitchen, living room, dining room. Free wifi with a printer.
There were plenty of stores nearby.

16 people reviewed the place and all gave it 5 stars and added good detail.
All were pleased with the host.
I can see this would be very good for me going solo and not being in the room much anyway.
checkout was a bit early, 10 AM. However I am always up early.

I could see this as a way of covering an expensive weekend and getting laundry done midtrip on one of my 20 plus day jaunts. And I could print those pesky free vouchers for Eastside Cannery free buffets midtrip.

 

Me personally, I would never do this type of lodging in a gambling destination. However, I do see the value in AirBnB. Let us know your experience for your trip in September.

 

Yes, it would save money and work out, especially for those that on a tight budget, that drive or take bus to multiple casinos.

For us, part of the reason we go to Vegas is to be on the strip. Be able to take the elevator down to the casino. And, stagger back to the elevator when the time comes. Stagger from drinks, or staying up way too late - either way.

And for those not in the know, it is www.airbnb.com Folks renting out rooms or their houses.

 

We've used airbnb in the past, but for an entire rental. I know, I know, we stay at "real" B&Bs but for some reason renting a room like this just sounds hinky. Hey, phobias aren't supposed to be logical. And we vacay through vrbo on many of our trips. Vegas isn't exactly known for staunch land-use so perhaps airbnb and its spinoffs won't face the type of scrutiny they're seeing in Santa Monica, Bend, San Francisco and other jurisdictions.

 

I know nothing about this concept, but is this like renting a room in a house? Like an SRO-type place?

 

I always think of SRO as lower-class housing.

AirBnB is renting out rooms in private houses or apartments on a nightly basis. I have never done it, but I have two friends who have (stayed in the Chicago area) and LOVED it!

I know that in the NYC area there have been some controversies, such things as landlords holding apartments off the market and using them for AirBnB. I've also heard of some cases in California where there were some legal issues getting guests to vacate at the end of their stay.

I don't think it's for me. I'm spoiled on hotels. Whenever I'm a houseguest I'm always afraid I will be too noisy, too untidy, will break something, etc.

Yeah, not for me either. I love the hotel experience too much.

 

I don't get it.... I mean I get it, but I don't see the draw. Give me a hotel room ANY time. I'm not even talking a suite... i'll take a bare bones hotel room over airbnb. Dewey, I know that you are a frugal dude, but there are hotel values to be had, especially for 2 night stays. You can print boarding passes/ coupon sheets at most business centers for a meager charge.

Booking it will depend on whether Eastside Cannery sends me a deal or not. I've been getting 2 for 1 at casino rate from them, and if I get that mailing for September18-19 I'll be set.
Actually, I'm booked at EC now for 18-19 but at twice the cost of this Air B and B and since I am getting some mailings from them, I won't want to just stay there and not gamble.

And if I get caught in the squeeze between no Eastside Cannery deal and it is also too late for this Air B and B because it is booked up, I'll probably just go to Eastside anyway.

Otherwise, this is the best alternative I have found.
Actually, if you do a search, you find it compares with those lowest of low prices, Hostel prices. I'm beyond the age when a hostel is attractive.
A $45 weekend night with no obligation to gamble is hard to beat.

It certainly beats El Cortez Pavillion rooms. There would be less privacy there with every other guest right outside the window and the maids also there in the morning, shouting and running their carts along the cement to create a sound like a small train. And by the time I get there, I might be ready to sleep a day away, or perhaps even watch a bit of television. I'd be betting that the television will have Turner Classic movies or at least something without commercials. Vegas hotel television is the worst I have ever seen.

I'm not trying to say it is right for everyone, but there may be others on this board who would enjoy it.

But here is the difference between many of you folks and me.
I'm in Vegas for 21 days. So I don't have that frantic need to fill every minute with some astounding sensual experience. I could use a break in the middle to do laundry, unwind, print up another free buffet at Eastside Cannery, etc.

I do like the frugal choices if I get what I want. This place will be quiet. There will be other people in other rooms, but I expect they will be perhaps even more respectful than the other people in the other rooms of the casino/ hotels I visit. This place I would expect to draw a visitor who even speaks in a quiet voice and does not roll in drunk, yell in the hallway, steal my do not disturb sign, and then slam the door. At least there will be no Fremont Experience noise, no block behind the 4 Queens with a Heavy Metal Festival starting practice at 5 PM on Saturday.

I will share a kitchen. In casino hotels I don't have to share a kitchen or living room, or dining room. Generally, I don't even get a refrigerator.

The biggest down side is I can't stumble down in the middle of the night to play poker. But I can do that on the other 19 days of my trip.

Try to find a place to do laundry with no car. I generally do my every night washout in my room, but I'd like a mid trip place in September to get caught up and be able to really wash the clothes well. I start this rather unusual trip with my wife and 5 sons at the Gold Coast to celebrate one son's birthday (he'll be at Caesar's).
I won't probably do much laundry in the room that first week.
So, by the 10th day of my trip, it would be fine to know I can do my laundry, a full load, in a machine and so get really ready for the second 10 days.


I like meeting strangers. I go to Vegas in part to do that.
I am generally solo. I like that too.
From strangers I can hear new stories. And there is so subsequent social obligation.

In vegas I meet people on the bus, at the poker table, and I've met some great folks in places just like this in Costa Rica and in other bed and breakfasts around this country.

To see this place do a hipmonk search for September 18 and 19 and read the comments on the Air B and B for the room with a private room and bath. There were no complaints whatsoever. That is truly rare. I really don't think I'm settling for a lower class experience just because I'll have some folks sleeping in some room as close as I certainly would have in any casino hotel in Vegas.

And certainly, if I do pick it, I'll let you know how it went. Perhaps I'll even have photographs this time. I now travel really upscale with my first smart phone, and actually the phone seems needed here as many guests report not meeting the landlady except in texts.

However, I'm only just explaining my own preferences, not trying to sell the idea to anyone who loves big hotels or whatever, but trying to show why in this case thinking outside the box might be a great deal.

Dewey's got it, you gotta do what's good for you. Vegas to us is resort hotel. We've had private units out at LLV a few times and it wasn't like we were in Vegas, which also is a consequence of being at LLV. But elsewhere, we love private rentals. Huge value, space, kitchen.

I decided to book the B and B tonight. Eastside won't have any mailings out until the middle of August for September. That is really nuts. Once again they lose me with inept management procedures.

The Eastside Player's Club would not check on the phone that they had my correct mailing information, some BS about having to see me in person. No other casino needs to do that just to let me know whether I will get an offer or not. I miss mailed offers all the time at the D and Four Queens, and they talk to me on the phone, tell me what I offers I have, and book my stay.
I stay at 4Q at the end of my September trip and the host person arranged for me to get casino rate and would even automatically apply the mailing to my stay if I wanted.
Such a difference.
By August those Air B and B rooms will be booked, so I just decided to book now.


Strange kind of booking at the B and B.
I was asked to send a photo for verification of what I look like.
Then I had to verify my phone number by having them phone call a code to me that I put in the booking application. Wild stuff.


I lose if I can't go for some reason. At least half the cost. Generally, I never book unless I get totally free cancelation, but I understand that a small operation like this can't be so flexible.


And if my phone breaks, I will have issues checking in.
But I am intrigued by this new adventure. I want to try it. If it goes badly, I know how to chuckle.

Also, I leave from a My Vegas night at Excalibur, go to the B and B for the weekend and then leave for a MyVegas Palace Station 3 night stay.
So that 109 bus is an easy way to get from casino to casino.
From Excalibur I'll take the WAX to the airport and the 109 right to the B and B at East Katie where I walk 5 minutes down the block to the address.

After I check out of the B and B, I'll take the 109 to the airport and then arrange for the free Palace Station shuttle.


This should be a relaxed journey with no difficult luggage issues and no standing at a bus stop at some strange bus stop with luggage.
I like the Ground Zero bus stop.


It certainly is easier than sandwiching in an Eastside Cannery stay between those two places. From Excalibur I would have had to take Tropicana and then the BHX. Then to get to Palace Station it would be BHX to Sahara and the Sahara Express from there. Not going all the way out to Boulder and back probably saves me about 2 hours total of bus riding.
It is good for bankroll. I'll take the money I don't gamble that weekend at the Eastside and pump up what I seed at Palace Station. I'm not seeding the Eastside if I can't get decent service on booking rooms with mailings.

The price for the B and B did go up to $103 for the weekend at the B and B. By hesitating I lost $10.

The Onyx Theater is very easy and nearby the B and B. I've been wanting to see one of their inexpensive plays, but from downtown it is a bit of a ride. Because their schedule is not figured past September 4th, I don't know what will be up (if anything) but it did attract me to this booking.

You register. I don't think you need a Player's Card. You will have to get one eventually.
You can register using Facebook, but I don't ever do that anywhere because were I to do that, all my friends would be available to Eastside Cannery.
By the way, the Air B and B wanted me to verify something by using Facebook and there too, my friend's list would be coopted by that search engine.
Every so often I get these ads on Facebook and wonder where they came from. Probably one of my friends has registered or verified something using their Facebook account and compromised what little privacy exists on Facebook.
I am certain that to get a voucher on any offer, you will need a Player's Card eventually.
Call the Player's Club and ask them if you can sign up for the Player's Card when you get there.

Then there are all sorts of ways to earn points. There are some casino online games. There are some puzzles.
There are little tasks that take you around the Eastside Cannery site. You don't buy anything to play.

The rewards are not what they once were. When this site started, we could get a free night with enough points.
Now, there are freeplay offers (with so much $$ play) free buffets, free drinks, discounts at restaurants, matchplays.

Unlike MyVegas, the redemption is not simple.
You have to redeem points and purchase a reward so you have to know what you think you want to use.
You have to do it at the last minute before you leave because you have to carry a printed copy of the redemption to the Player's Club.
After redeeming you have a week to do that.

Then you get a voucher that you have a month to use.

My trips to Vegas are 20 plus days, so I have to manage a trip to Eastside Player's Club in the first week of the trip in order to get the benefit and generally I am not planning on being out on Boulder for the first week. In September I am going for a birthday celebration and family gathering for my son, then my wife will stay for the rest of the week (she does not like all the couponing) so in September I won't be really ready for Eastside Cannery until later in September.
Generally, I don't have places to print for free in Vegas. And these buffets are worth so little that it is really not worth it if I have to pay to print. I had a buddy living there and I'd get him to print and voucher before our meetups, but he moved to another state.
Explore the site a bit and play around. I don't do everything and I don't go on every day. I have a ton of points from back when it first started and I was playing the games and doing other things to build up a good point count. Now that the room offers are gone, I won't probably need all the points I have.
Since I earned most of my points, the entire board has been updated. I played some craps the other day. That was fun. I like the crossword puzzle and a couple other of the weekly promotional options.
And every trip I at least get a free buffet and two free wines, carry the wine into the buffet and have a frugal supper.

It really is a program set up to serve the locals who are their bread and butter. For a local, all the hassle would be out of the redemption process. they would redeem, print, and use the reward that month.
Now, there may be a way to use a smart phone for some of this and do it right in Vegas.
The casino, however, won't want to print anything for you. They might if you beg and are sweet or offer a sob story and find the manager at the desk, but generally, they don't.

Looks like we may be able to get some lower level rewards which is nice. We usually always end up out there at least once on our trips. Thanks!

 

If it's just a private bedroom, I wouldn't do it, no matter how cheap it was. I like to have my own room (with bathroom) and enjoy the anonymity of a hotel where I can come and go as I please, watch TV in the middle of the night, order room service, etc. Just a personal preference.

 

I have an AirBnB that I love in San Francisco and try to use it when I go there, but it books up quickly. It's a small (tiny) inlaw apartment and it's perfect for just me. I was very nervous before I tried it the first time, but it worked out wonderfully. It was in my son's neighborhood (The Mission) where there are no hotels, so that was what got me interested at first. I studied hard before making my choice and I am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone. I liked it much better than the SF hotels I have stayed in.

I also booked one in Toronto but I broke my arm the day before the trip and had to cancel. I lost the entire $450, so that left a bad taste in my mouth, but shit happens. Just be very careful to read all the fine print and know exactly what you are getting into.

 

As it turned out, my mailing from the Eastside Cannery was just a 2 for 1, so the Air B and B was the most frugal. I was happy to have it booked. I'll let you know how it works out. I'm confident I will be pleased. The hardest part of a Vegas trip for me is covering the weekends cheaply.
