    Trips to Las Vegas:

Hi all, since my wife and I go to Vegas once per year for our anniversary my posting/browsing habits are quite cyclical ;). I post a yearly TR, but only as the trip approaches I tend to browse the forum more often! I am glad to see the usual suspects continue to post (Joe, timspeed, natedog, beejay, funk, sco, kellyovesvegas, shock, shifter, paytriple, pphold, packer, and any one else I missed) still continue to post! This forum is very fun and useful!

At any rate I currently have 4 different rooms booked! And I'm still looking around for deals :). Smartervegas is awesome.

Anyways, I'm looking for a bit of advice...

Beforehand we're in our 40s, pretty mellow, like to drink, gamble (low roll), eat at happy hours, pool, etc... also we like to have a tub that fits 2  Also, we enjoy having a view of the strip ;). Last year we somehow magically got comped a terrace studio at Cosmo, but i doubt that will happen again this year :(

So far we have the following rooms booked...
First 3 are all about the same price out the door (about $400):
    • Mandalay Bay - standard room with free upgrade to suite plus a bonus of a late checkout of 3pm (this is a very nice perk since we have a late flight)
    • Delano - I booked a panoramic suite. I'm hoping this will include a strip view but could not tell from any info. This is actually more expensive than Mandalay but comes with $75 credit which basically evens out.
    • Aria - standard room with some resort credit. Again, pretty much evens out.

Last one I just booked off of the total rewards website...somehow I get free rooms at flamingo and ballys but wasn't too interested (flamingo's elevators scare me and bally's lack of tub for the jubilee rooms set me off). So..
    • I have booked $11/night at Planet Hollywood for the hip room. After resort fee it's about $150 total. Price is right.

What I don't know is is the Delano worth it for the new extra pool? What about the walk to the pool...I have read that it is a trek.
Aria, we like and also the location is nice, but we're thinking maybe of something different.
Delano we have never stayed. Also we like the idea of a strip view. Does the panoramic suite (which supposedly has a 180 degree view ) automatically have a strip view?
Mandalay Bay we have stayed before, sort of leaning on.

Planet Hollywood looks OK too (especially for the price!). Although not sure about the basic room and strip view. It seems not likely? Also the pool has me a bit nervous since it looks like "only" a party pool? How comfortable might a couple middle aged fuddy duddy's feel over there?

Planet Hollywood has the worst pool on the strip. If pool is a priority, do not stay there.

I think my vote would be for the Delano. Here's my reasoning:

    -New private pool area
-Rooms were just redone within the last year. The first couple tiers of suites at MB are just really larger rooms with not much of a seating area. The Delano suites have 2 bathrooms and a separate living room. The space is better used.
-I've never waited to catch an elevator when going to my room at the Delano.
-The walk isn't really that bad, add maybe an extra 5 minutes from your room to the pool.

The only downfall of the Delano/MB is probably its location. It takes a bit of time (the free tram does help) to get the NYNY/MGM area, so take that into consideration if you plan on going up and down the strip a bunch. If you can get a room at the Delano for the same price as a MB room, I would stay at the Delano hands down.

We would always choose Delano over Mandalay Bay because of the half-bath "powder" room. Also, the Delano suites are true suites - with a full wall and door separating the entryway, powder room and living room from the bedroom and master bath. That is great if one person wakes up early (in our case, that would be hubby) and wants to check the markets while the other person is sleeping.

The Mandalay Bay pool complex is so large that if you don't like the Delano pool, you can simply walk over to the MB area. Mandalay Bay also has Moorea Beach, which is an adults only, top-optional pool. You will see a fair number of people in the 40-50s age range. It has upbeat music, but doesn't have the "party" pool atmosphere since Daylight (MBs dayclub party pool) opened.

The Panoramic suite does not guarantee a Strip view. Two Panoramic Suites (which were called V-suites when it was "THEhotel") are located at the end of the hallways, one suite on each side of the hall. Since Delano tower is "L" shaped, there are different view combinations. At check-in just request one that has a view of the Strip. We've stayed at Delano twice and have found their front desk personnel to be very competent and courteous.

The walk from Delano to the MB pool complex is very simple - it probably takes 5-6 minutes from your room at Delano, including elevator time. Coming from Delano you proceed past the MiX hostess desk and enter the MB Casino -the MJ One theater will be to your left and the MB Sportsbook to your Right. The casino is a giant square with the MJ One theater and Sportsbook located in the upper Right-hand corner. The beach access for all pools is on the Beach level (1 floor below Casino level) and near the lower Left-hand corner of the casino. So from the Sportsbook, you would walk towards the main Mandalay Bay doors. Proceed slightly to the right of the entry doors, and take the escalator/stairs down to the Beach level. Once on the beach level, follow the signs to the pool.

    Have fun on your trip!

Based on your criteria, I would go with Mandalay bay, especially if you get the upgrade to a suite. MB has the best pool complex, a number of different bar/lounge options, and you're more likely to get a strip view there than Delano. PHo probably has the most low rolling gambling options of the hotels you are considering, but the pool is terrible and the vibe is definitely younger. if the MB gambling options are too expensive, Luxor and Excalibur are next door. Good luck!

This is true - at Mandalay Bay you can actually RESERVE a Strip-view room by paying the extra amount (maybe $25?) per night for it. Last time we checked (which was several years ago) Mandalay Bay still does not allow you to RESERVE Strip-view suites, only the Strip-view rooms.

And I suppose Delano has strip views, but I can't imagine they are as good as the MB views. I've been lucky the last two times I stayed there my host put me in suites just below the Foundation Room, so I had the same fantastic view you get from there

Totally agree - the best Strip-view that Delano can offer is if you are on a high floor directly under MiX looking north. If Strip-view is our highest priority for the trip, we stay in the Mandalay Bay tower in a Four Seasons Strip-view room or suite. Same view as Foundation Room and the MB suites right below :nworthy:

Thanks for the feedback. I'm about ready to take PH and Aria off the list.

I forgot to mention earlier I booked a strip view normal room hoping that it would translate to a strip view suite at checkin. But I guess it may not be guaranteed.

Delano sounds pretty darn good too. We'll just have to see in the end and maybe flip a coin :).

I don't know why but this is all part of the fun trying to decide where to stay ;)
