We usually stick exclusively to the Strip on our Vegas trips. This time we are bringing first timers who want to see Fremont Street. I was thinking we might be able to grab a good and cheap (compared to eating on the Strip the rest of the trip) dinner while we are Downtown. Where do you recommend that we will be impressed by the food and the prices? Thanks!

Moderate prices at Redwood in the Cal and Second St Grill inside Fremont.
We just ate at Redwood Saturday night. Great food and atmosphere. Party of 5 and the total price with two appetizers and a couple of glasses of wine was around $250. Reservations needed at both as they both get busy.

Compared to the strip everything is cheap on Fremont unless you're hitting up V+A or Andiamos. It really depends on what type of food you guys are interested in but Hash house is pretty good, Triple George grill or 777 if you don't want to break the bank on a steak, or the place housing multiple restaurants next to Slotzilla. Can't go wrong with $1.50 tacos or good ramen. There are also a ton of other restaurants near East Fremont. Le Thai is really really good, Pizza Rock is comparable to some of the best pizza I've had and La Comida has really good sea bass tacos, patron and margaritas. If none of those sound appealing there's also all the restaurants in Golden Nugget (Cadillac grill, Grotto, Claim Jumper). So many selections downtown..

Even Andiamo isn't that expensive. Most of the entrees are in the $24-$50 range.

5 of us ate there (and ate very well - drinks, wine dessert) and the bill was well under $500.00 (closer to 400.00 IIRC). This same meal on the strip would have been $800-$900 easy.

C'mon, if you're not ordering a pasta dish, the cheapest steak on the menu is a $42 and going up to $83 for the tomahawk ribeye. All sides are extra. :poke: Cheapest glass of red wine is $10 going up to $30 per glass. And it is called a "steakhouse".

Triple George Grill and 777 are my faves. Chart House at GN is also very good.

At 4Queens you have Magnolias, The D, you have The Grill, and Golden Gate Dupar's. Any are a good choice for cheaper good food. Dupar's has GREAT pancakes, and french toast.

If you want really cheap, 4Queens has Subway, The D has McD's, and Cony Island. Binions also has a cafe/deli, but I've never eaten there before.

All of the previous recommendations are places that get great reviews and I've been to a few myself and agree that they'd be good options. But if you want something out of the ordinary and very good, I'd suggest Carson Kitchen over in the Fremont East district, which is just a couple blocks removed from the FSE. It's mostly small plates perfect for sharing, so it's great for groups and reasonably affordable for how interesting the menu offerings are. I was just there a couple weeks ago...check out Day Four of my trip report for more info, or here's their website:

Chicago Joes and agree with the Cals choices as mentioned above. 777 Brew Pub. and Binions deli and cafe are good cheap choices as well as many of the above mentioned.

Yeah, like I said "most" of the entrees. Only about 6 of the 25 or so entrees are above $50 (and that 6 includes two that are $51). There's also steaks for $47, $48, $43, etc.

The OP asked for something cheap "compared to the strip", which it is in my opinion.

Thanks for all the info! I'm leaning towards Du-par's or Chicago Brewing Co. We have a couple of beer drinkers so I'm thinking we'll end up at Chicago Brewing Co.

We plan to eat at Redwood during our next trip. How far in advance do you make a reservation? What food do you like to eat there?
    Thanks,

Beef, it's what for dinner!:wink2: I rotate between NY Strip, porterhouse, ribeye & prime rib. They also have a 1.5# King crab leg dinner. All sides included for all dinners. We usually start every dinner with the escargot appetizer and this last time we also ordered the baked oysters. Very tasty!

I've also had the filet/lobster tail combo for $52. I'll sound like I work for Redwood, but their food is always consistent, good quality.

My wife, besides beef, has had the ahi, crab legs and the lobster thermidor. Her only complaint was the thermidor was almost too rich in the heavy cream sauce.

You can now go to OpenTable.com and make a reservation on line. A few days ahead should be fine.

A tip: Request Jannelle or Hilario as your server.

If you are looking for good food with great beer options (draft and bottle) and great happy hour specials, you should consider Pizza Rock. They have a large dining section and a bar section.

Love the Cal, good call on the servers, and I'd add the Porterhouse special ($24), is a good option if you like steak, and it also includes soup or salad, vegetables, potato and desert. The Redwood is my favorite downtown restaurant.

I ate at the Redwood last week and enjoyed it.
I only made the reservation a few hours in advance, we had to wait at the bar when we arrived because they were running a little behind, but the atmosphere was good.
The steak was cooked exactly how I wanted it, and my wife was happy with hers too.

We had Du-Pars a couple of times too, I wouldn't call it super cheap for what it is, but you get generous portions and I have no complaints.

Triple 7 is always consistent and I love that you can get classic American pub food and sushi at the same place.

Will try Andiamo's on our next visit.

I really liked Andiamo's when I had it. Thinking about using some of my food comp there next time.

Redwood Grill is very popular Downtown because of the value it provides. And the food is great.

If you've got a couple of beer drinkers, I would highly recommend Park on Fremont. It's got a great beer selection, really good food at a reasonable price, and some very funky decor. Nice big booths too, if there's a group of you.
