I have excruciating pain under a crown on my bottom left side, a molar I guess. How can you have pain under a crown? I thought they killed the nerve. Or is it the little piece that's left sticking up?

The pain is giving me a migraine. The earliest appointment is 7:30 A.M. tomorrow and it's supposed to snow tonight.

I need a pint of morphine.

That sucks. I often have sensitivity under my crown, but not pain like you describe. I wonder why this happens.

I had a similar issue a few years back... I've gone to the same dentist for 30 years and he really likes to explain things. I'm not that great at listening (just fix it), but the whole nerve thing isn't an "exact science" he told me. Mine required popping off the crown and going back in a "treating" the nerve. Once I was numbed up, it really didn't hurt much and whatever he did worked. Mine was just really sensitive to hot or cold, not the kind discomfort you're describing. Good luck with it!!!

The real question is "Did they do a root canal before they did the crown?".

It is typical to do one, but not 100% of the time.

Could you site a source for that comment about not doing a root canal before a crown?

I know both my wife and I have two crowns each and everyone was preceded by a root canal.

I just had a crown and bridge done about two weeks ago My dentist did not do a root canal on the crowned tooth - he said it did not need it but that he may have to back at a later time and remove the crown/bridge to do the root canal.

I had a wicked toothache last year and couldn't get into the dentist til the next day. Someone told me about this and it really helped......put Vicks Vaporub on your face on the side of the toothache, massage in and cover with a warm compress. It really seems to provide temporary relief.

I can be a source on that one. I can't really remember why they needed to put a crown on (maybe cracked tooth) - but they did NOT do a root canal first. Although, what ended up happening is that after they did the prep work for the crown, the tooth started causing me great pain, and they ended up doing a root canal before the final crown was put on - which I was extremely grateful for.

Sorry you are in such pain Breeze. Tooth pain is awful. Get some good drugs :).

I have over 10 crowns in my mouth. One some of these, I was asked if I wanted/a root canal first.

I believe that the front teeth didn't have root canals done.

I have three crowns and another coming next week. I have never had a root canal on any of them and occasionally have a problem with one of them. My dentist gives me a short course of amoxycillin and, knock on wood, that has always resolved the problem.

OK, I stand corrected. Both of our last two dentists made it sound like it was SOP.

I have several crowns, but have never had a root canal nor had one recommended. It all depends how bad the tooth is and if there's enough area left for a "normal" filling. Someone I know recently had a bad pain under a crown and ended up having to have a dreaded root canal and a new crown. Like almost everything - it depends!

Good luck Breeze and let us know how it goes.

I can't remember if a root canal was done or not on that tooth, but seeing as how I fired that dentist for putting a crown over an abcess, nothing would surprise me. This crown never fit right and is a meat catch basin that requires constant attention, so it could be anything. I prepared myself for a root canal, but I'm not happy about it. Anything to relieve the throbbing pain.

I had a massive toothache for two days during my vegas trip a couple of months ago. Turns out it was an abcess. What brought temporary relief is this stuff you can buy at the drug store that you rub on your gums near the source of the pain. I forgot the name of it but it felt like the same stuff the dentist would rub in the gum area before sticking in a needed. I did that, gargled with salt water (just figured that might help if it was an an infection), put the stuff on my gums and took 2 Ibruprofen, alternating with 2 Tylenol. I didn't get rid of the pain entirely -- the toothache was that bad -- but it killed enough pain that I could finally fall asleep. I got everything from the Caesars gift shop near the front of the hotel and about an 1/8 of a cup of salt from the restaurant that is front of the check in area. Kinda funny when I think about it. The bartender saw I was in some serious pain and gave me enough salt to gargle for a few days!

I had a couple crowns put on sensitive teeth last year without any root canals first. The dentist thought that was all that was needed. They are still far too sensitive to cold food and breathing cold air in winter so I asked my dentist about doing root canals now on the teeth. He told me they can do a root canal without removing the crown, they just drill a small hole and then patch the crown (molars). I hope that's correct because I'd hate to pay for the whole process of removing and redoing the crown. I doubt my dental insurance would cover it either as it was only a year ago.

Sorry to hear you're in pain Breeze. Whiskey might solve the tooth pain tonight but probably won't help your migraine in the morning. Hope it all works out for you.

I've suffered with tooth pain under crowns for several years now. I have one left that needs to be replaced. If you gargle with warm salt water, it usually helps. Anbesol can also provide temporary relief. Otherwise, Vicodin is the only thing that helps me. Hope you feel better soon! Tooth pain is the absolute worst. I'd rather have another child before I have severe tooth pain again.

Yes, it worked really well. Thank you!

The verdict is in on the tooth. Root canal on March 18. In the meantime, they gave me antibiotics and Vicodin.

Insurance doesn't cover it so it's $1500 and change.

Thanks to everyone for the advice and comments. This is a great bunch here.

Sounds like ya might need root canal retreatment under the crown if you didnt have it already

My wife works at a root canal specialist
