Vegas Chatter is reporting taxi fares are increasing by 8% in addition to other misc. increases. Prices will be higher than LA and NYC. Makes long hauling even worse now!

Meh. That sucks. But fares have been close to constant since I have been going back to Vegas since 2011. I think only the McCarran fee went up in that time frame. Pretty sick vegas is higher than NYC/LA. I would have assumed NYC would be $3/mile by now. What also sucks is the biggest portion of most fares, the mileage rate, is going up 10%. I was hoping $2.80/mile, but nope $2.86.

I am still amazed they get a fuel surcharge of .20 $ a mile which if you add to 15 miles = 3 $ which is close to a gallon. I thought surcharge was just to help out, not finance the entire purchase. They got you by the ying-yang and local politicians and everyone else knows it.

In places like NYC and Chicago the average ride is only a few blocks (for me, anyway), but in Las Vegas it's typically a few miles. That adds to the cost quite a bit.

Maybe once you're there, but the airpor's in most major cities are much further from the "business-hub" than is the case in Las Vegas. It's a pretty quick ride from the airport to the strip and even downtown for that matter.
As an aside, the rates haven't been increased since 2008.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not gonna defend the cab industry in LV... not on this site... it's a losing battle... just some additional information on the matter.

I'm getting pretty good at finding the path (pun intended) from EWR into Manhattan, and even occasionally from JFK, but I seldom fly in there. LaGuardia is another story, and a taxi is about the most convenient.

In Chicago I always do the train. Actually very convenient to both airports now.

Yeah, when in Las Vegas its usually $15-25 to get from the airport to most hotels... in other cities its usually $55-75 to go from their airport to a downtown hotel.

When I first read it was going up 8% I thought that seemed like a pretty good sized jump all at once... but then when you consider it hasn't gone up in almost 7 years thats not bad and by comparison using the "Big Mac Index" the price of a Big Mac has gone up almost 30% in the same period of time.

the realness that Uber, Lyft or any other ridesharing will ever hit Vegas is slim. They would have to register every vehicle and maintain insurance and personnel checks and i doubt uber would ever do that. They are trying, but it is a 20k fine for operating a car for hire plus impounding of the vehicle.

If you read the LVRj article on the fare increase they don't come right out and say UBER isn't happening in Vegas but if you read between the lines that's what it say's.

Yeah here in Charlotte NC airport to downtown was $45 UBER came along and does it for $15-$20 depending on traffic so cabs came down to $25 to compete. UBER is superior to any cab Ive ever been in. Public demand and UBERs war chest will win in the end.

I love Uber but I doubt they will come to Vegas anytime soon... Not a fan of this taxi fare increase even though the cab rides are pretty short... However, I will mention that my experiences with the taxi drivers have been pretty good lately..

There hasn't been a rate increase in a while, imagine being in a job with no pay increase. Taxes go up, insurance goes up.

I have sat in meetings about lyft and uber. Uber told potential drivers they would be in business in vegas in late december, early January. Uber takes no responsibility for drivers cars getting impounder and drivers getting arrested. Once drivers get booked on it, they will never be able to drive

Sad that the biggest demand for Uber isn't tourists but locals out away from the strip where getting a cab becomes increasingly difficult from what I've read. Even if Uber wasn't permitted for pickup at the airport and casinos it would still be a viable service especially for those of us who would love to explore more of the local food drink and gambling options but don't want to risk a DUI.

I certify a ton of cabs every year for our airports and I can tell you Uber will be kicking rocks in a year or so. They're able to do such low rates by ignoring all the insurance/certification requirements. Once all that stuff gets to court, they'll have to raise their prices. I could go deeper into it but I'll leave it at that. Don't invest in Uber. Their long term success depends on buying off judges.

its true. Uber doesnt carry insurance nor do background checks on everyone. People are getting beaten, robbed and more and uber accepts no responsibility. the other bad thing is the drivers dont make very much money, so they are relying on tips. Honestly, how many people would tip $10 on a $15 ride from airport. im sure in the future you will see some ride share in Vegas, but it wont be the current way that uber does business.

People have bad experiences with taxi crab drivers too.. Personally, I haven't had a bad experience with an Uber driver (yet), so I'm sticking with them. They make it an easy process when it comes to arranging a pick up and paying with a credit card, which makes expense reports a lot easier.

Ha! Not many people around here, judging by past posts on tipping!

You use the local transit bus and subway from La Guardia to get a lot of places in NYC
