    Introduction

Looking for video poker value on the Vegas strip? The convenience of a bartender fixing up your favorite libations? Well, you've come to the right place! This thread is designed to help you find some of the best games available in your favorite casinos in Vegas. Better games will lead to better long-term results and winning more is more fun!

Before getting into the details, first off, I want everyone to be aware of a great reference for the “best of the best” video poker games in Vegas and the rest of the country.

It's the VPFree2 database, and can be found at http://www.vpfree2.com

VPFree2 typically lists all available games in the casino that are 99%+ return or higher. Unfortunately, on the strip in particular, it's difficult to find 99%+ games at bartops or at the nickel and quarter levels on the casino floor. So this thread is an attempt to list some of the best options in the casino for bartops, and machines on the floor for various denominations. The cheapest casino floor choices will be listed at the end of this thread some of which are beyond VPFree2's scope. The base unit will be dimes or less in that list.

    How to Read a Paytable

Before listing these, however, let's take a moment to discuss how to read a paytable, and what kind of paytables you should look for different game variants.

For non-wild paytables, the two most important payouts to look at are the “full house” and “flush” payouts highlighted by the red box. These are typically the only values changed for most non-wild games. So the higher numbers you can find for a particular game is better than lower numbers.

The game in the picture is an example of “full pay” Bonus Poker Deluxe. “Full Pay” means the highest payouts you will typically find in a casino. In the case of Bonus Poker Deluxe, this is when the full house pays 9 for 1 and the flush pays 6 for 1. These are the same full house/flush payouts seen in “full pay” Jacks or Better except that 2 pair pays 2 for 1, and 4 of a kinds only pay 25 for 1. Any reduction of the full house or flush by one “notch” costs the player about 1.1% in return, so 8/6 Bonus Deluxe pays about 1.1% worse than 9/6 does. Each game variant typically adjusts four of a kind payouts and two pair payouts to adjust the variance of each game.

Lower variance (less win/loss swing) games (2 pair pays 2 for 1) in order of increasing variance:

    Jacks or Better
    Bonus Poker

Higher variance (more win/loss swing) games (2 pair pays 1 for 1) in order of increasing variance:

    Double Bonus
    Bonus Poker Deluxe
    Double Double Bonus
    Triple Bonus Plus
    Triple Double Bonus

Now looking at the Royal Flush line, you'll see that a higher payout is given for Royal Flush when 5 credits are wagered. Instead of 1250 for 5, you get 4000 for 5 instead. This is a major draw to play video poker, giving a jackpot element for hitting a Royal. To get the maximum return percentage, you must bet 5 credits. If you play anywhere from 1 to 4 credits, the overall return of the game will be reduced by about 1.25%, with a much smaller “big win” opportunity.

    Other General Considerations

Many bars will also expect you to bet max quarters at least for “free” drinks and some casinos and/or bartenders can be strict on that. Also Aria's bartenders are supposed to wait 30 minutes between comp drinks. ParkMGM requires 10 points ($100 coin in between drinks). All CET bars have a light system where you need to play enough to qualify for a drink. Cosmo and some MGM and V/P bars the first drink is on them, but after that you'll have to earn drink vouchers. Wynn only comps drinks at Charlie's sports bar (up to $25 retail).

If you don't want to bet max for shoestring budget considerations, I suggest just betting one credit. This also works well when the bartender isn't looking. ;) NEVER bet 3 or 4 credits, because at that point, you lose less per hand by betting max. Also never bet less than max when playing “Triple Double Bonus” because “4 Aces with a 2,3,4” will pay 400 for 1 instead of 800 for 1 with a max bet.

For Deuces Wild games, the paytable isn't as easy to decipher. Any of the following payouts may change: Wild Royal Flush/Five of a Kind/Straight Flush/Four of a Kind/Full House/Flush. The best paytable you'll likely find on the Strip is called “Airport Deuces” and pays back 98.91% with the following paytable 25/15/9/4/4/3 and a max bet.

There are few popular “gimmick” games that help add to the game's return. Super Times Pay (STP), Double Super Times Pay (DSTP), and Ultimate X (UX). In STP/DSTP, you pay an extra 1 or 2 credits per hand for the chance of being rewarded random multipliers. STP typically increases a game's return by 0.28% and DSTP by 0.50%. In UX, a player pays 5 extra credits per hand to award multipliers for “winning” hands. This adds roughly 1% to the game's return, when played properly. The strategy is multiplier dependent however, and more detailed strategies may be found here: http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/tables/ultimate-x/

Also, some bars offer progressives on Royal Flushes or other hands. For Royal Flushes, for every $500 extra for the royal flush at quarters ($2000 at dollars) adds about a “notch” to the game (1.1%).

    Strategy Help

What about regular video poker strategies? Here is a free strategy generator that can be used given any paytable values: http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/strategy/calculator/ As mentioned previously, Ultimate X strategies can be found here: http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/tables/ultimate-x/

Here are two common strategies useful for bartops: 8/5 JoB, and 8/5 DDB

8/5 JoB (can be used for Bonus Poker as well):
    http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/strategy/a-1-b-74-c-1-d-0-d-1-d-2-d-3-d-4-d-5-d-8-d-25-d-50-d-800/

8/5 DDB (can be used for Triple Bonus Plus as well):
    http://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/strategy/a-1-b-57-c-1-d-0-d-1-d-1-d-3-d-4-d-5-d-8-d-50-d-80-d-160-d-160-d-400-d-50-d-800/

How do you use the strategy? Simply pick the choice highest on the list that applies to your hand.

Does that strategy seem too much for you? Look at this one that works well for Jacks or Better as well as Bonus Poker.

Paytable Listings for Common Bartop Games and General Bartop Notes

Now I am going to list the paytables that you should be looking for. I'm going also use a general rating system. *** means “full pay” for non-wild games, ** means 1 “notch” below “full pay”, and * means 2 “notches” below “full pay”. I do not recommend playing any game not worthy of getting at least one star, and the more stars the better! “Full pay” is generally over 99%, and each “notch” typically costs the player 1.1% in non-wild games. For example, 9/6 Jacks or Better has a 99.54% max return, but 8/5 Jacks or Better (2 notches lower) has a 97.30% max return. Deuces Wild has 6 common paytables above 96.5%. The highest two are not readily available on the Strip though.

    Bonus Poker – BP – 8/5*** (99.17%), 7/5** (98.01%), 6/5* (96.87%)

    Bonus Poker Deluxe – BPD – 9/6*** (99.64%), 8/6** (98.49%), 8/5* (97.40%)

    Bonus Deuces Wild -- Bonus DW -- (straight flush through flush varies): 9/4/4/3*** (99.45%), 13/4/4/3** (98.80%), 12/4/4/3** (98.28%), 10/4/3/3* (97.36%)

    Deuces Wild – DW – 25/15/9/5/3/2***** (100.76%), 25/16/10/4/4/3**** (99.73%), 25/15/9/4/4/3*** (98.91%), 20/12/10/4/4/3** (97.58%), 20/12/9/4/4/3 (97.06%), 25/16/13/4/3/2* (96.77%)

    Double Bonus (Note: Straights MUST pay 5 for 1 and NOT 4 for 1) – DB – 10/7/5**** (100.17%), 9/7/5*** (99.11%), 9/6/5** (97.81%)

    Double Double Bonus – DDB – 9/6*** (98.98%), 9/5** (97.87%), 8/5* (96.79%)

    Jacks or Better – JoB – 9/6*** (99.54%), 9/5** (98.45%), 8/6** (98.39%), 8/5* (97.30%)

    Triple Bonus Plus – TB+ – 9/5*** (99.80%), 8/5** (98.73%), 7/5* (97.67%)

    Triple Double Bonus – TDB – 9/7*** (99.58%), 9/6** (98.15%), 9/5* (97.02%)

General Notes: Jacks or Better, even though often recommended by many people for new players to play, is RARELY a good game on the Strip. Much more often, Bonus Poker is the better game available. A JoB game needs to be two “notches” higher than Bonus Poker to be a better game (e.g. 9/6 JoB > 8/5 Bonus, but 7/5 Bonus > 8/5 JoB) Strategies are nearly identical for both games.

Note about CET properties: In my experience, Game Kings at CET bars are virtually the same. I haven't checked every property, but all but a few I have checked have the same paytables. The best two games at most CET Game King bartops are in following order. I wouldn't recommend playing these if avoidable.

    30/6/5 BP (96.18%), 7/5 DDB (95.71%)

I'm going to generally put these in all the CET entries, but if this is incorrect at a particular property, let me know. Only exceptions I have currently found: Rio Sports Bar/Shutters.

    prog. = progressive

Wow, that's quite a treatise! Hopefully will help get some folks into the best machine games in the casinos.

That Loose Dueces Wild five cent machine at the D is supposedly the best odds machine in America. My wife likes to play it if she's been beaten up too much playing quarters. She's never had a royal flush on any machine, nor four dueces on a Dueces Wild machine. I sit down at that machine to play for her when she needs a brief break. I've hit four dueces on it three times, playing less than 10% of the time she has. I like that machine!

Yeah to my knowledge, it's the best paytable in America right now. I feel your wife's pain though. I've also never had a quarter royal flush or 4 Deuces while playing Deuces at quarters. Hoping to change one or both of those next week!

Thanks. :) It's definitely what I was aiming for. I'll be trying to add to it in a couple of weeks. I want to get more details out of MGM as they vary more than CET does and I'm more of a CET loyalist, so I haven't looked very much at MGM to this point. :( After that, I'll definitely need some help to fill in some gaps and of course the occasional paytable change. Have a bad feeling this might be my last trip for awhile...

I, too, would like to add my thanks, this will save me a bit of time roaming the CET props, as I am staying with them for the first time in a long time, and will be playing there a bunch this upcoming trip, looks like i need to hone my DDB skills if I want to get best value at the bartops there...

One question, does standard JoB strat work for Bonus Delux as well as standard BP? or is there a better strategy on WoO?

Tringlo, this is epic -- even more than I could have imagined or hoped for. You could probably make money selling ads to a website that contained all of this updated info! Definitely deserving of a permanent sticky

Thank you for putting this together!! Heading out in Oct. Mostly a craps player but I have been playing around the last couple trips with VP.
I plan on doing a lot more VP this trip.

Other than the obvious bank roll needed, there's no difference between .25 & 1.00 on the same pay tables? Do some players feel they do better on higher denomination?

Standard JoB strategy works pretty well. It only costs a few hundredths of a percent. So given the same full house/flush paytable, bonus deluxe is the higher return game. But the variance is a lot rougher. Some minor changes in strategy taken from DDB will help close the gap.

    1) An inside straight draw with no high cards is better than garbage.

    2) An inside straight with two high cards is better than two off suit high cards.

This does mostly list bartops. Payouts on the floor are generally better. I have also listed some games below quarters on the floor, but many of those games offers quarters as well. Most strip casinos have decent listings at www.vpfree2.com for floor machines so I've avoided fully copying those.

The percentage return would be identical, but the swings and the average loss will be about 4 times as high. Unfortunately in my own personal experience, I've done better at lower denominations than higher ones, but that's just bad luck. :(

Thanks! But I don't think I could out do vpfree in this department. Especially considering how far I'm away from Vegas. :(

Awesome thread!!!!!! I will help keeping it updated.

Also, why not list the Aria drink policy (1 per 30 min) at the Sports Bar that about half the bartenders enforce in the same spot you tell about the Wynn not comping. That's important info.
