    My Trip Report

Another trip to Vegas on the books! My last 3 trips were solo, but this trip was with my wife, her sister and…. her husband.

I love going to Vegas with my wife. We make great travel partners and enjoy each other’s company through- out the trip. Wish I could say the same about her sister and husband. They are the opposite, constantly arguing and bickering. I almost bowed out on this trip because of this but my wife convinced me to go. We’ve traveled to Vegas with this couple before on several occasions and I vowed no more. But my wife really enjoys going with her sister and my wife and I haven’t traveled together for a while. So I promised myself to just grin and bear it for the sake of my wife. I tried. And it was very hard. All I can say is that there were better trips than this, all without the company of my wife’s sister and husband. My sister-in-law is a sweetheart but that husband of hers, well, let’s leave it at that.

My wife and I had offers from the Orleans for 2 nights each. So we booked the 4 nights consecutively plus paid for the 5th night. They rolled the nights all together and we didn’t have to checkout and check in after my wife’s offers expired and mine kicked in. That was great. We were on the 5th floor with a view of the pool below. The room was big: king size bed with sitting area, flat screen T.V., safe, big bathroom; with everything being clean and functional.

I love the Orleans. This is the 2nd time my wife and I stayed here and we’ve visited this property many times in the past. There are so many things to do here. Lots of dining options. Tons of slot machines, Video poker machines and table games. The paytables on the VP is more favorable than on the Strip and the table games start at 5 dollar minimums. Drink service is spotty at times when playing machines but very frequent if you are playing at the tables. Don’t know why this is, maybe because the property is huge? The employees are friendly and the dealers are fun. This is a great property to visit or stay at. By the way, there is a shuttle that runs every 30 minutes or so between the Orleans, Gold Coast, and Ballys. So even though the Orleans is out there by itself you can catch this shuttle to visit the Strip.

The latter part of our trip was spent Downtown. I had 4 nights comped at the California Hotel and we got put in a room in the West Tower. The room wasn’t as big as the Orleans but it was clean and functional. The West Tower rooms are better than the East Tower, as they have been recently renovated. My wife and I stayed at the East Tower in 2012 and the rooms were tired looking and needed to be renovated. I’ve always opted to stay at the Cal when using my comp room and food rewards and have been fairly pleased with the property. However, this past trip was somewhat of a disappointment. I’ve always enjoyed playing at the Cal but on this trip it seems that something was missing. Couldn’t quite make it out. It seemed that the employees, dealers, and pit personnel were indifferent for some reason. Many were not smiling, hardly being social to the players, and just seemed to go through the motions. I’ve noticed this especially at the craps tables, which is where I do most of my gambling. I remarked to my wife that I wasn’t having fun at the Cal and would find the “fun” tables at Main Street and Fremont. I’ve also noticed that there were many unfamiliar dealers at the Cal and that the dealers I remember as fun were not there. Maybe they all were on vacation? Hope that nothing serious happened there because I really felt like that property lost it’s vibe.

My wife and I had nothing really concrete as far as dining in Vegas. We prefer to eat at casual fine dining places, buffets, and the 24 hr. cafes for breakfast or late night specials. The only thing we planned was having the 2 for 1 dinner buffet at Mandalay Bay from my wife’s My Vegas Rewards. We were going to see Michael Jackson 1 after dinner. We also loosely planned on eating at 2nd St. Grill at the Fremont, Redwood Grill at the Cal, and Claim Jumper at Golden Nugget. You know how that goes, ended up we didn’t get to do none of the above, lol! Oh well, there’s always another time and another trip.

On my wife’s sisters birthday we treated her (and her husband…sigh) to the Wicked Spoon Buffet at the Cosmo. I really enjoyed this buffet and raved about it for the rest of the trip. I think it’s neat how they offer some dishes in individual portioned bowls or plates. It looks nicer and avoids waste. The crablegs were small but split for easier eating and they were sweet and juicy. They had whole spicy prawns with chile sauce that was awesome. It was fried crispy so you could eat it head, shells, and all. The prime rib was cooked perfect at medium rare. They had roasted turkey, hams and sausages, beef ribs, and their Asian dishes were superb. Salads, soups, desserts, all were very good. I left happy and full.

We also ate at the Mandalay Bay Buffet for dinner. We used my wife’s My Vegas Rewards to get the 2 for 1 deal. This buffet is pretty good and solid. The dining area is nice, clean, and tables were spaced for comfort instead of the “cattle herd” mentality where you are just crammed in with the masses. The ambiance was pretty nice, actually. The buffet offerings were on the small side as far as variety but what they offered was very good. Their prime rib was stellar and generous portions were dished out. I actually had to ask for a smaller portion because I didn’t want to waste and also wanted to try other things. The way they planned out the buffet traffic was terrible, though. After you get your prime rib they had the horseradish sauce in another area where you had to cut through the line of people waiting to get their food. Why they didn’t put it right where the carver is located remains a mystery. They offered ciopino (sp?), that seafood stew with mussels, scallops, crab, shrimp, etc. It was wonderful. Very tasty and fresh. They also had osso bucco but it was undercooked and didn’t fall off the bone. Their oxtails were delicious, though, with fall off the bone tender meat and great broth. The 2 for 1 offer is a tremendous value, but I’m not sure paying around 35 dollars per person is worth it. It’s still a very nice and good buffet.

    Other places we ate at:

Big Al’s Oyster Bar.(Orleans) I ordered the Ciopino Seafood stew (big portions and great!) and a half dozen oysters. The oysters were fresh but tasteless. Must be the season? Tasted better last time. Oh, and the waiter sucked. He must’ve been having a bad day. My wife was pissed but forgiving. I remember another board member having a bad waiter experience here on their trip report. Wonder if this guy waited on them, lol!

Koji Sushi and China Bistro.(Orleans) My wife and I had sushi. Very fresh, delicious, and affordable. Prices not even near what you would experience at the Strip places. I had the sushi platter that had various nigiri sushi on it and my wife ordered two sushi rolls. I forgot what one was but it was good and the other was called the Vegas Roll. It had a crusty tempura outside texture and the inside had tuna, salmon, avocado and some other stuff. This roll is memorable. Going to have it again next time out!

Orleans buffet: It’s nothing fancy or anything to rave about. Just a good value play for breakfast and lunch. I enjoyed their shrimp cocktail. The shrimp was sweet and the sauce a killer. Went back for this 3 times. Oink.

Orleans 24 hr. café: Another non-fancy value play for breakfast. And dinner for that matter. The breakfast portions are ridiculously huge. One night my wife and I didn’t eat dinner till 1 a.m. They had oxtail soup as a graveyard special. Awesome. It was great! Never had it here before and never knew it was offered. I must say it was better than the oxtail soup they offer at the Market St. Café at the Cal Downtown. Good stuff!.

MSS Buffet: I dunno. I love the dining area, all bright, airy, beautiful place. Went to breakfast only this time. Can’t screw up breakfast, right? Well, I guess you can. Limited fruit section ( no oranges?) and they ran out of BACON!! How do you run out of Bacon? By the time it became available I’ve already gave up on eating. Just drank my coffee. My last three trips it seems this place is slipping slowly….

Market St. Café (California Hotel). Another value play here. Food is good but service is pretty mediocre. One of the downers of this trip is that we ate here too much. My in-laws ( my wife’s sister and her…sigh…husband) insisted we eat here because of their food coupon book offers for discounted food. Not trying to make waves, I reluctantly went along (I love my wife). This is one of the reasons my wife and I didn’t get around to eating at places like 2nd St. Grill and Redwood, among others. There are times when you say “f#%k it to the discount books and food vouchers. There are times you want to eat places of interest and you don’t care if you have discounts or coupons. That’s o.k. Next time. When my wife and I are not with her sister and her…sigh…husband. Like I said, didn’t want to make waves. Because when I make waves, I make BIG waves…. tsunamis; to be exact.

Triple 7 Brewpub (Main Street). As much as I’ve visited and stayed Downtown, I have yet to have eaten here. Well, finally did it. I’m pretty sure it’s a not bad establishment. My wife enjoyed their prime rib and her sister liked her BBQ ribs. I had their T-Bone steak special. Nothing special. Actually, It was the worst steak I have ever tried to eat. I say tried because the gristle, tendons,( or whatever those gross white stringy things are) made it impossible to eat. My wife’s sister’s husband ( you notice I can’t even say brother-in-law) ordered sushi. It looked really amateurish and dry. I’ll be fair and try Triple 7 again sometime.

Aloha Specialties (On the mezzanine between the Cal and MSS.) We ate here once this trip. I had my favorite tripe stew and my wife ordered one also (she knew I would eat hers too). The portions are huge. My wife’s sister had a beef and chicken teriyaki bowl and her husband had saimin noodles. If you’re ever Downtown and want a change of pace, try this eatery, specializing in foods popular to the 50th state. It can get crowded at times and getting a table is a crapshoot but there’s always take-out.

How’s my trip report so far? Boring? Sorry, lol! Next I’d like to share with you what we did for entertainment and finish off with some gambling stories.

Enjoying it so far! Sorry to hear you had a bad steak at 777
Redwood and Second St are our favorites, but I have had plenty of steaks at 777 and never had a bad one.

I’ve always wanted to ride the Monorail. Just to say I did it. So when I mentioned this to my wife she was game. We bought all day passes and rode the thing from one end to the other. Meh. Glad I got that out of my system, lol! We stopped off at the Ballys station and walked around Flamingo, Harrahs, and Margaritaville. We then ventured to Bellagio and Caesars. Played a few slots and VP here and there. I managed a 4OAK at Bellagio but otherwise its just play and lose.

The Flamingo is a nice resort to walk around and visit, however I find that the time- share people in there is just plain damn annoying. They are literally everywhere. My wife and I love to hold hands while walking and it seems to be a magnet for these people. I don’t think I could stay at the Flamingo because of this. They won’t take no for an answer. We experimented walking separately away from each other when we approach a timeshare gauntlet and it actually works! They seem to target couples.

The Bellagio Conservatory was nice. Don’t know what kind of theme it was but it wasn’t as spectacular as the Autumn and Winter themes. There was a bird aviary that housed some interesting and rare-looking birds.

At Caesars there was some contruction by the sportsbook and the smell in that area of the casino seemed like…..crablegs cooking, lol! We played some slots with no results, looked at each other and said let’s get the hell out of here.

We got back on the Monorail and took it to the end of the line, the MGM station. We got off and walked through the casino and tried to find the Lion Share machine. No luck and really didn’t care too much to play it, just wanted to see it and see if there was a line to play it. We then walked over to NYNY and played a few machines there. After that we headed toward the tram that takes you from Excalibur to Mandalay Bay. My wife wanted to pick up the Michael Jackson One tickets and redeem her My Vegas points for the 2 for 1 buffet.

The Michael Jackson One show was interesting. First of all I wondered how Cirque du Soleil will interpret the songs of Michael Jackson. I’ve seen “O” and Beatles Love. I know that a Cirque show is all acrobatic in nature. So the beginning of the show to me started off a little slow and odd. Some of the performances in relation to the song being played seemed weird. The acoustics in the theatre was a little bass heavy to my liking. But as the show continued it got better and better. It was a visually stimulating show from the front, sides, and above. There really are no bad seats in the theatre. The special effects, lighting, and performances were spectacular. I would recommend this show to all MJ fans and to anyone looking for a great entertaining show while in Vegas. The finale of this show is memorable and had the whole audience on their feet applauding the performers for a wonderful show. Go see this. You won’t be disappointed!

As you might recall, I mentioned that I really like staying at the Orleans. And you’re gonna laugh at this, but my wife and I spent several afternoons going to the…..movies! Yes, here we are in Vegas and we actually went to the movies! In the afternoons movies are a couple of bucks cheaper and with hardly anybody going, it seems we have the whole theatre to ourselves. One afternoon we saw the new Planet of the Apes movie. Then on another afternoon we saw a movie called “The Hundred Foot Journey”. One action flick and one romantic one. One for me, one for her. Compromise. And that’s why we are still together all these years. It was a nice change from the gambling, lights, and noise of the casino.

The Orleans has this neat lounge area and on wed. thru sat. nights they feature local bands that play various music. The last time my wife and I stayed here they featured a band that played disco and 80’s music. We never had a chance to go into the lounge as it filled up quickly. This time around we managed to snag a table on sat. night. We stayed till 1a.m. in the morning listening and dancing to the bands music. It seems that a lot of locals were in house tonight and they were having a great time! It made for a fun people watching experience. The band played several James Brown songs and the people were letting it all hang out. Some of these dancers were very good and imitated the James Brown moves very well. And the drink prices were reasonable: $4.75 for Coronas and $3.50 for mixed drinks. My wife and I sat at the open lounge in the Paris casino the other day and Coronas were $8.00 and mixed drinks were $11.00. What a difference! Anyway, the Orleans lounge act was very entertaining and made a great night out with my wife.

On this trip because it was with my wife I toned down my gambling a bit. I wanted to spend more time with her and less time at the tables. I looked at this trip as a relaxing, laid back type of trip so I didn’t bring a bankroll that I would usually bring when I go solo. I did mention to her that toward the final two nights of the trip I might gamble a bit heavier and she remarked it didn’t matter either way, just don’t go crazy and lose it all. I’ve never done that so far and hope I never will.

We would gamble together, either playing slots or dabbling at VP. I would play craps when she would go off to play machines with her sister. My wife’s sister loves to play quarter DDB VP because back in 2013 on one of their trips without us (thank goodness…) she hit a Royal Flush at the Cal treasure chest machines. She has been hooked ever since and plays VP about 80% of the time and the rest at penny slot machines. My wife is a VP newbie and is still learning proper strategy on DDB VP when lo and behold… at the MSS coin dropper quarter machines she hits a Royal Flush! She was in shock. She held a two to a Royal in Diamonds and the other cards filled in nicely after that. I was so happy for her and giggled at her shocked face as people around her congratulated her and asked if they could rub her shoulders for good luck. The slot attendant paid her and my wife gave her a twenty. Then she had to scratch off her scratch card and won….2 dollars. Needless to say my wife is now a hooked VP junkie!
I promise to post that Royal Flush pic. as soon as I figure out how to do it. My daughter has to help me. I still can't figure out these new phone things....I'm getting old.

As far as myself, I love to play craps. But I also have a newfound interest in DDB VP. On this trip I spent a considerable time playing mostly quarter VP. I managed to wring out a fair share of 4OAK’s here and there but for the most part VP was a losing proposition for me. I would often play VP at the machines closest to the craps tables so I can monitor the craps action as I play VP.

While at the Orleans I played next to this very interesting Asian fellow. He was a dark side player and would bet don’t pass every time one of us would shoot. And he was doing fairly well, grinding out small wins here and there and being quiet and discreet about it. Funny thing is, when the dice comes to him he would switch and put 5 dollars on the pass line and shoot. He wouldn’t put odds on his bet. But he would shoot fairly well, I must say. Way better than all of us right bettors. And he would roll and roll while we pressed our bets and made some money back from all the point/seven-outs. He actually would apologize when he sevened out. Then when the next shooter came up he would go right back to betting don’t pass. After about an hour he quietly grabbed his chips and left. I estimate he probably ground out a 60 to 70 dollar win. 5 dollars at a time!

My other craps sessions at the Orleans were forgettable. Mostly losing, frustrating sessions where I quickly left because it was no fun. There were a few fun sessions because of the players and dealers but these sessions were not profitable either. So I saved my bullets for another day.

When we moved over to Downtown, my craps play didn’t improve much. If this were a solo trip for me I would imagine this would be a major bummer. But because I was with my wife it was not bad at all. I simply quit and we would either go shopping or play slots and VP together. I like going solo but when you have a great travel partner like my wife, solo trips take the backburner on this one.

As the trip neared it’s end I started playing a little more heavier. At MSS I finally managed to roll a heater, in my estimation close to 40 minutes. The guy next to me made a ton of money off of my rolls, for he was betting heavily (greens) on all the hard numbers, the 12, 11, and deuce. I managed to accommodate his bets and he was yelling for joy. I remember rolling hard tens and hard 4’s back to back on numerous occasions when he would parlay those bets. I swear he jumped 10 ft. in the air every time I hit those numbers. The two rows of his racks were filled end to end with greens and blacks by the time I eventually sevened-out. To my amusement the boxman and the two pit critters stood up and bowed homage to me for my good roll, lol!

Then all of a sudden this table soured on me. I was happy for this guy who made a ton off of my rolls but his demeanor after my roll killed all the fun I was having at the table. There were 3 older gentlemen after me who rolled maybe twice then would seven-out. One guy rolled, set the point, then sevened out. All this time the guy next to me was betting very heavily and obviously losing very heavily. He started muttering under his breath about “lousy shooters” and “shit, I lost 500 dollars on that guy”. He also mentioned that he wanted me to shoot because I know how to shoot, not like those guys. He was muttering this under his breath but I’m pretty sure those older gentlemen heard him. They looked at each other, laughed, then said “hey, lets go play at the other table”. My mood soured but I kept playing. The rest of the players at the tables were not shooting well, and the guy next to me colored up, can’t remember how much he left with but there were many yellow and purple chips handed to him. To his credit he tipped the dealers a little over a hundred dollars and some change. As for me, I was down when I started my roll, got up to a thousand or so after I sevened out and left up 700 when I colored up.

Another session at MSS saw me down to a hundred dollars from a 400 dollar buy-in. The table was a fun table with happy-go-lucky players all losing but being positive nonetheless. I told myself I’ll shoot one more time but this time instead of my usual place across method I decided to play the continuous come bet method. Boy that was fun! Nothing is more fun than having a continuous run of “off-and-on” wins as you cover all the numbers with come bets with odds! I kept rolling and rolling and grabbing chips after every roll. My rack was a mess of greens and reds and rapidly filling up! After I sevened-out I wisely colored up and won back my original 400 plus a cool 550 more. Yay! That was fun!

I also played craps at the Cal, my home casino. This is the first time that I didn’t have fun here. Something was definitely amiss. I used to have tons of fun with many memories of fun dealers, happy players and hot streaks. No more. I might as well have been playing in a morgue. I hardly recognized any of the dealers, couldn’t see any I remember fondly of, and all of them didn’t seem that they wanted to be there. And I don’t think I was imagining this. The MSS tables and Fremont tables would be jam-packed with players and when you look at the Cal you’ll see one lonely table with the dealers standing around because nobody is playing there. Just uncanny. I played several sessions there, several times enduring the bickering between dealers while the box person looked like he/she wouldn’t give a rat’s ass. I left in frustration. I hope this was just a blip on the radar screen and not a bad sign of things to come.

One night at the Cal. there was this pretty lady who never threw dice before. Her husband had a sizable rack in front of him and he asked her to roll. She wound up and threw overhand like throwing a base ball!! Dice and chips were flying everywhere, and every other roll careened off the table! But she was hitting hardways, points, elevens, everything. You name it, she threw it! The pit critters were politely but firmly asking her to tone it down a bit. But the rest of us were saying, “Never mind, just keep doing what you’re doing!” I can’t remember how many times she hit the players at the end of the table in the chest, shoulders, and as one player mimicked, in the balls. He was just faking it but he rolled his eyes and grimaced as her shot hit his chest and ricocheted down the front of his pants. All in fun! She made quite a bit of money for us and provided a fun atmosphere for a change.

There was one session at the Fremont where I enjoyed a great run of the dice. They have a roll meter there that tracks how many rolls you make before you seven-out. I rolled 32 times, and managed to squeeze out a 300 dollar profit. I placed the point for the dealers several times and won them some good money. I also had them with me on the line and they won with me on that also. I once rolled 3 sevens and 4 elevens on the come-out, each time placing a pass bet for them. They simply loved that also. I didn’t know that if you roll twenty something (can’t remember) consecutive rolls you get to choose a gift from their gift section. After my roll the pit boss gave me a voucher so I can go choose something . I love baseball style caps and collect a whole bunch of them so I chose a Fremont baseball cap. Something small, but a good souvenir of a fun time at the Fremont!

These were probably the best sessions I’ve had during this trip, the others are not worth mentioning. Thanks to some good sessions on the last few days I came home $1800.00 lighter in the wallet. If the earlier trend continued it would’ve been a whole shitload worse.

This trip with my wife’s sister and her husband cannot go down as one of the better trips I’ve been on. I could’ve rambled on and on as to how this trip was a frustrating and irritating trip for me, because this couple was always bickering, arguing, and being a Debbie-downer on everything we tried to do. But I won’t. Writing about it will only upset me again and wouldn’t be in the spirit and intent of this forum. Maybe I’ll save it for those “Worst Vegas Companions” threads.

My wife and I did enjoy what time we had together, though, and hopefully our next trip we’ll be able to go ourselves. I encouraged my wife to go to Vegas with only her sisters because they really enjoy each other’s company. Naturally her sister’s husband would have nothing of it. Too bad. Selfish bum.

My next trip? Maybe semi-solo during the Thanksgiving Week-end with my sister, my mom and my mom’s friends. Usually in this scenario I’m on my own except for meetings for dinner, breakfast, etc. We’ll see.

Would I ever go again with this particular couple? Only if my wife asks me. Because I love her. Other than that….. No. Fuckin. Way.

Moral of the story: Chose your Vegas Partners carefully!

Good Luck fellow VMB’ers and have a Great time on your next Vegas Adventure!!

That sounds like how it looks EVERY TIME I've walked through The Cal's craps pit...
Fremont seems to be the most "fun", with MSS a distant second.

Great report....I am hoping the last visit in May was not an unusual blip on the screen as (mostly in the afternoons) the Cal craps tables were hopping and full of fun people (ok maybe one or two were sour) mostly from Hawaii. They didn't want to lose but it wasn't the rent money. The dealers(?)...eh...but knowledgeable and friendly and more than competent box. Glad you made some comebacks (like golf....1 or two good shots and you can't wait to get back).....

Decent recovery! And it sounds like your wife is another convert to the "crack" of machines. :wink2:

And TIMSPEED, when he figures out how to post that pic, she's gotta be holding Ace-Ten of diamonds right? :evillaugh

As I promised, here is the picture of my wife's quarter DDB VP Royal Flush : IMG_6798.jpg

Also, just wanted to add that we visited the following off-Strip Casinos:

    Red Rock
    Sun Coast
    South Point

We've been to all three before, really nice properties (CW's are gorgeous, btw.) :evillaugh Never made it to the M this trip.

Great trip report! We enjoy the Orleans, too. You really kept things upbeat on your report, considering you were having to deal with you wife's sister's ... sigh... husband. Thanks for a great read. Makes me want to go to Las Vegas NOW!

At one time I had the CW's at South Point rated as some of the best. M had some pretty nice ones too.

Your trip report is just what I needed! Have 6 nights at the Orlean's very soon and have only played there, so the info you gave is helpful!
How was your room? Did you try the $20 trick?
How did you get to Red Rock, Sun Coast and South Point? What property of the 3 do you recommend?

The Orleans room is big. There's a separate sitting area and the bathroom is big because the clothes closet is next to the vanity/sink. The toilet/shower tub is in a enclove by itself.

My wife and I were comped 2 nights each, so I didn't use the 20 dollar trick. I'm not picky as to the views from the room. I'm also not sure if there are better rooms you can get with the trick, I presume all of the Orleans rooms are somewhat the same, I think.

We rented a car so that's how we were able to visit the off-strip properties. The Suncoast rooms are really nice, Strip resort quality when I visited my friends room last year.
I like the Southpoint when I visit but didn't stay there, same for Red Rock. I would stay at Red Rock if offered some rooms. The Property is beautiful but you would need a car, I would think.

If your tastes in a room is not too upscale you will enjoy the Orleans room. The rooms are clean, beds are comfy but you must realize you are not in the Wynn/ Venetian/Palazzo types of resorts.
