Our Sept holiday is now coming together and we will be flying in to SFO on 4th Sept. For logistical reasons we need to take a taxi from the airport to Sutter Street.
All the sites I've surfed say there should be no problems but do any of you helpful folk out there have any tips or advice?
Only 89 days to go!

Hang on to your camera. smile.gif
Seriously, getting a taxi at the airport isn't a problem. I have no idea what the price will be, but I'm sure it will be more than the bus. :D
I've been waiting my whole life for BART (Bay Area's "subway) to run to the airport. Now that I've moved away, it looks like they're finally going to finish it. :( Not soon enough for my niece to take it to the airport for her visit later this month, but maybe next year.
*ONLY* 89 more days? That's 3 months. Are you going to count it down for us? :D tongue.gif
Hope it's a good one!

Hi Sonya,
Like the camera comment!Everything will be nailed down, the low life won't strike twice. But at least if they do we're chasing our memories the other way.
The BART link to the airport sounds a great idea, knowing you all over there it will be clean, cheap and punctual, but I don't think we'd fancy even that with 5 pieces of baggage. Heathrow Express in London is bad enough but you have to grin and bear it with the rip-off prices taxis charge.
According to the web the ride should be around $35 for 13 miles(about £25) would barely take you half the distance in London.
89 days sounds a lot less than 3 months - don't shatter my illusions! Anyway the important count down is 93 days to 5 WagerWorks nights at the Mirage!
I'm sure I'll have lots of odd and none too intelligent questions over the coming weeks to keep the count down moving.
David.
By the way, it gets little mention over there but congratulations to your soccer team, their 3-2 defeat of Portugal in the World Cup is their finest since they beat some team (who's name escapes me) 1-0 in the 50's!

I couldn't forget about the camera! I bought a video camera for a trip to Yellowstone National Park about 12 years ago. Just before we got to the park, the camera strap broke and it fell right on it's lens and broke. I was devastated. I mean, we made do with our memories and still photos, but whenever I see film of the geysers, I get a little sad that I never got any of my own. While we didn't let it ruin the trip, it is one little regret we've got. I can imagine that if someone had stolen the camera after I got a bunch of great video to share, I'd be even more sad about it.
$35 sounds like so much for a taxi cab ride, but I guess it sounds about right for the distance.
Just like in Las Vegas, when you come out of the airport baggage claim, there is a taxi stand (actually several of them.. it's a big airport) where you can catch a cab.
I'll be looking forward to the countdown. :D

In San Francisco, I like the Big Blue Van, but I've only used it when I called ahead to have it pick me up--I don't know if you can just get on it at the airport. I haven't used it in a few years, but it was aroun $15 when I did.

Do you mean SuperShuttle? We used them a lot when Dan was traveling for work all the time. I don't know if you can use them for hotel transport, but I don't see why not.
Searby, let me know if you want me to try to look up a website or phone number for reservations.

Yes, the Super Shuttle--but isn't the phone number or the advertising 1800BigBlueVan? It really stuck in my head like that for some reason :D They have a website: www.supershuttle.com (http://www.supershuttle.com) and they give city specific information. They do go between the hotel & airports--to leave the airport you don't need a reservation, but you do for pick-up, and approximate rates are on the website as well.

Many thanks HoyaHeel and Sonya, as always this site comes up trumps.
I'll do my research after the small matter of England v Nigeria which is on at the moment.
David,
PS: Like the pic. Sonya - What are you doing if Gail can't make Sept???

Well, we're through - 0-0 draw against Nigeria and we play Denmark on Saturday, I cannot understand how you Americans prefer to watch people taking it in turns to throw a ball through a hoop when there is a game like soccer around?? Still I've never understood how it is that the USA always qualifies for the World Series Baseball finals!
Anyway, Sonya, firstly I remember that photo of you and Dan you once posted and cannot see any difference between the two. Anyway mine isn't me either! (He must be spinning in his grave to see the way his once proud nation is heading).
Now to serious?? matters - the SFO web site quotes party taxi fares of between $25 and $38 with suggested downtown at $32 and the Supershuttle fare is $12.50 per head $37.50.
So it looks as if the taxi marginally wins on cost and, presumably, comfort. Passenger safety then comes into play, I remember aging 20 years going from Central Park to the Empire State in NY - are SF cabbies bent on early deaths too?
Only 84 days to go, setting about cashing in our WW points Saturday, just in time.

Hee hee!! Okay, I believe you that I look like the picture.
SF cabbies aren't as bad as in NYC. But did you see the Steve McQueen movie Bullitt? :D
IMO, cab drivers are always a little bit crazy, but none have been as crazy as the drivers we had in Cancun! Those guys are nuts!
