View Full Version : Upgrading my poker skills

I've been playing poker for several years now, and can safely say I was ahead of the curve as far as the poker craze is concerned. However, my skill level seems to have peaked. Like everyone else who plays, I'm an above-average player! I just don't understand why I keep having to make deposits into my online poker account.
So instead of just practicing with the Wilson software, buying and studying books by the likes of Brunson, Sklansky, Caro, et al, and grinding it out at the low limits tables in Tunica, I've decided to take my preparation to another level.
So I've aquired a few accessories that seem to help the pros.
I got:
A pair of Raymer's 'reptile' glasses, Chris Moneymaker's goatee, Devilfish Ulliot's knuckle-ring jewelry, Johnny Chan's orange, Hoyt Corkin's cowboy hat, Phil Laak's Unabomber hoody jacket, Phil Hellmuth's walkman, and Sam Farha's unlit cigarette!
I'm just sitting back waiting for the millions to start rolling in...
Wish me luck. graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

And what do you take from Annie Duke's game? Barefoot, or skintight pink shirt?

That is too funny! My husband and I were just discussing last night where he could pick up some costume rings before our next trip, as inspired by Devilfish Ulliot. We are almost total poker novices and fairly straightlaced office types at home, but when in Vegas ya gotta get with the 'bling'.

How about a pair of brass knuckles? Not sure if they are legal to wear but it would make you noticed.

Ah...Goldmember...You have much to learn, grasshopper.
Getting noticed is not a problem I usually have to deal with...

I'd say the hottest poker accessory is one that even the pros don't have: Andy Beal's bank.

The devilfish was/is a jeweller before he went to be a poker pro,I think he makes it all himself.
Cheers

Mikey,
One excuse you could use for having to keep ante up, is that if you are like me, then you would not trust the online poker for $$$!!!
I play on Ultimatebet.com but only for free - practice... I do not trust the online, as I think hackers could cheat?
Unfortunately, my $280,000 "free" dollars built up do not get me too much real things!

I'd also add in Men the Master's bottle of Corona, and possibly Daniel Nagreanu's NHL hockey jersey (either Leafs or Wings) although it wouldn't look right with Laak's hooded swearshirt popping out the top of it! Good thing there is no fashion police in poker!

Mikey,
I thought it was only me getting frustrated with online poker. I love playing but am tired of my pocket kings getting busted by the 2-4 offsuit on the river. I feel like I am making intelligent decisions (well, most of the time anyway) about how to play my hands but success online continues to elude me. I too am tired of sending in more deposits instead of making withdrawls.
I will say that I don't necessarily distrust the sites because any efforts they might make to increase their rake on a given hand is as likely to help me as it is to hurt.
Curious as to others experiences online.

Hey Bob--
My tongue was firmly planted in my cheek when I wrote that post. Kinda like saying "All the children in Lake Wobegon are above-average". I cashed out of Party Poker with a profit a couple months ago, and my latest trick is to put in like $50 or $60, play for a day or two, then cash out with an five bucks or so. Like hittin' and runnin' on a slot machine.
I don't trust the online poker rooms just for the fact that somebody can be controlling 4 or more players in a 1-table tournament. There have been a couple of instances when I susptected collusion, so I've drifted away a bit. But also, the extreme annoyance I have with the World Poker Tour hasn't helped, nor has ESPN's choice to give so much face time to the losers and lowlifes in their WSOP coverage.
I can practice with the Wilson software, which is tougher than any poker room I've ever been in, and it doesn't cost me anything.

Mikey My favorite part of the Wilson software is the option to "Challenge Mike", which my brain always sees as "Challenge Mikey". Provides me an opportunity to keep my Smack sharp, as well well as my poker skeels.

Okay, maybe I just suck then. Curious as to where can you find the Wilson Software?

Terry, I don't think you and I have ever faced off at a poker table. Be careful what you ask for, old man!!! :D
Dougie and I are tied at one apiece. I took an entire rack off him one day at the Horseshoe in July of 2003, and he got me back by taking down my flopped wheel when he stayed to the river with 10-6 offsuit this past March. Bastard. graemlins/grrr.gif
Jer has me one-to-nothing. Also last March at the Bay, I had pocket Aces, he had pocket Kings. He got the King on the river. He still owes me a few beers for that one.
You show up for March Madness, we'll have see a few flops. But bring money--me and the boys are eating dinner at Charlie Palmer, and I'm gonna use your bankroll, biatch!
Bob--just to a Google Search for "Wilson Poker Software" and it'll take you to their site. You can order it online for like $60 I think.

Trying to bluff or just calling everything... it was simple. Then all of a sudden I can't win a thing. I bet pocket aces out of the gate & get beat by 2 pair by some schmo who refused to fold his 2-7 off suit or I get a boat & re-raise till my pockets are empty only to lose to 4 of a kind... & then the next hand wins with ace high card as I'm back at the cashier making another deposit graemlins/grrr.gif . I've made the degenerate mistake of chasing my losses recently by jumping up to higher blinds. I can't say that I'm done with it, but reality has set in and I no longer have the urge to jump on nightly and when I do, I'm back to the blinds that I can afford. I've made 2 rules for myself; 1. Don't play after 4 beers. 2. Be happy with a small profit & know when to leave the table. Now if I can stick with them.....

Mikey now THAT's what I'm talkin' about!! some good old-fashioned Smack! You gotta run it Before the game, or it's just bragging.
I remember two poker stats from March:
I'm 1-0 against T2Vers (VegasJer)
and
Bazootch was crowned as T2V Poker King, due to his winning enough chips to build furniture with, and bonus points for making the old guys cry with his four of a kind.

A few poker lessond I learned in March:
Busting a fogeys social security bankroll with flopped quads is not looked at favorably by busted dudes buddies.
3:30 am is not a good time to try to get 4 seats at the same poker table.
Be patient, it usually doesn't take long to see the table captain (or idiot) get busted up pretty bad using his years of experience and wisdom.
The cup holders on the poker tables at MB hold nearly 50 bucks in quarters. Carmen the beverage GODDESS does not mind getting tipped a handfull of said quarters for a few bottles of water.
* I JUST let wifey know that I would have to be in Vegas for a poker tourney the week prior to our already planned trip...
