View Full Version : Hot Streak at the poker table this week...

Ok...with everyone's prodding, I finally bit the bullet and made a deposit on PartyPoker.com and got my account going.

A few of us got together the other night, played a few hands, talked a little smack, and discovered that online poker is a bit different than cardroom poker. Not better or worse, just different.

Anyhow, Bazootch introduced me to 'Seven Card Crack', otherwise known as the Single Table Hold'em Tournament. He'd been emailing me whenever he won one, and I was getting worried that he was getting too good and that he'd run over me in March.

Holy moly--what a great concept the single table tournament is.

Buy in for 6 bucks, only the top 3 people get paid. Winner gets $25, runner up gets $15, 3rd place gets $10. Outlast seven people and you make money.

It took me two entries to figure out exactly how to play it, with it's increasing blinds and such, but I think I got the hang of it now.

I won my first tournament on my 3rd entry, which was late Wednesday night.

I had so much fun, I came home from work last night and got into a $10+$1 tournament. And I won it! Ok--two in a row. So I took my $75 in winnings and bought into a $30 tournament. I got knocked out in seventh place, out of the money, when my pocket kings ran into pocket aces.

I licked my wounds and immediately sat at a new $10 table. I won. Ching--another $50. Ok--out of 4 tournaments in a row that I'd entered, I won three of them. graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

I gotta respect the streak, so I immediately entered another one (they usually take less than an hour to get through each one). I was on fire and made it to the final 2 people. I was head to head with some girl who was not very good heads up at all. I had a $6000 lead against her, and I *knew* I had her beat.

Then the unthinkable happened. graemlins/eek5.gif My internet connection died and I got disconnected. While I was swearing at the computer and trying to get reconnected, I was getting blinded off $400 at a time! graemlins/cussing.gif

Two minutes later, when I finally got reconnected, I had less than $1200 worth of chips left, and had to go all in and lost. I was pissed. I still got $30 for second place, but I was not happy about it.

I took a little break, lost about $25 on a 2/4 cash game waiting for the pizza delivery man, then jumped back into another tournament. This time I got knocked out in 4th place, just out of the money, when my full house got beaten by a larger full house

Not one to be discouraged, it was almost midnight and I jumped into another $10 table and won it an hour later.

That's five out of seven in-the-money finishes for me since late Wednesday night, and $195 in prize money just playing those one-table tournaments. I think I like them better than the regular games (I've noticed most of the people in the tournaments play them exactly the wrong way, and none of them are any good head to head...)

Anyhow... I must thank Bazootch for getting me turned on to those single-table tournaments--they really are a kick in the pants.

So this morning, I turned on the computer while I was getting dressed, just watching a 3/6 cash game, and decided to join. They made me post a $3 blind to get cards, and I was quite disappointed when I looked down to see a Nine/Deuce offsuit. Great--way to throw away three bucks, I thought. But nobody raised and I got to see a flop.

2-6-2. Hello!

People wanted to play, so I just called. A four came on the turn, so then I raised, not wanting somebody to make a straight against my set. Everybody called.

The river brought a nine. Then I was hoping somebody got two pair or a straight made.

I raised and two people called me.

Bam! $60 up in less than 2 minutes.

I slammed the desk like Kramer in 'The Contest' episode-- "I'm out Jerry!!!!"

And with that I went off to work.

Now I'm sitting here watching the clock, counting down the minutes till 5 pm.

I must agree that those "single table" tournaments are fun. I've been playing them for a while now on PokerStars. I've made a decent profit. Comparing both sites, I think I like PokerStars better. Once you go all in and only one caller, they imediately turn the cards up, so you can see what each player has. Then the remaining cards are turned with some delay to make it interesting I guess.... Also, when looking for a player, you just type in the name, and it will tell you in wich table this player is at.

So now we know the REAL reason you were late for work--I was going to chalk it up to just being Friday!

I gave in and learned craps. I guess I'm going to have to give in and start watching poker & read those books y'all talk about all the time....Otherwise I can't follow what everyone says!!

Ladiesman..

I agree with you, party poker does have some limitations that others don't, but I only chose it because of the lack of hoops I had to jump through in order to make a deposit (I do that whole e-check thing from a secondary bank account that never has more than $500 in it. I hate having to go through firepay and all those other things that want a cut.) Also, I'm not a big fan of the cartoon animations there (pokerstars lets you put your own picture on, I like that...)

I always try to get seat 5, that's the bald guy, but every now and again I'm stuck in seat four, the pink shirt...I'm secure enough in my manhood to be there, though, so I'm ok with it.

Bazootch, your finders fee will be a flashlight and a bowl of chili.

When I play a table tourney, I try to NEVER bet unless I am the blind, especially the first round. The books I have read always tell you to look for a reason to fold. I cant remember how many times pocket pairs get cracked because the card doesnt flop, or when its high enough, the other guy beats you with pocket treys because one hit the board.

It will be so much fun to play in Vegas. Looks like we will have quite a few players, so we will have to meet up somewhere and T2V a card room!

You think they'd frown on us all showing up at the Gamblers General Store and sitting down at one of their poker tables, using their chips, and getting into a deck of cards?

We'd probably be ok until some jackass asks for an ashtray and a beer...

Hey, it's one way to avoid the rake.

That would be ok...

Speaking of 'jackass', its not as though we are making a deposit in a showroom toilet.

If you start playing alot of online poker then you might be able to justify the cost.
