I am totally addicted to the nickel slots. I know some people make fun of them. I used to make fun of them too until I started playing them one day because "I was broke." Now I laugh at my self because I didn't know what I was doing and I was putting in a nickel at a time. redface.gif
Now (after I learned the real deal) I realize that my money goes much faster because you don't just bet a nickel or three. My average bet is anywhere from $1.35 (9 lines x 3) to $2.25 (9 lines x 5) as opposed to what I used to bet on the quarter machines: .25 - .75 or on the dollar machines: 1.00 - 2.00.

I guess that's why there are so many nickel slots now a days. I think the casinos make more money on the nickel slots than on the others.

We have learned the same painful lesson. One other point to mention is that the higher denominatoin machine the higher percentage payoff. We almost alway play only $1 and even a $5 dollar machine once in awhile (they pay off well). Only if we are NOT doing well will we play .25 machines, but NEVER Nickel Machines!!! They are the Casinos BEST friends, which would explain why there are SO many of them as opposed to the higher denomination ones.

Our first trip we were the same way - we stayed away and just played the quarters because we didn' know how the nickel machines worked. When we went last month, though, Billy tried them and we got the hang of them pretty easily (we even taught another couple how to play them). I'm glad we did too. That's where we won most of our money. Billy had two hand pays from them ($250 & $69). It may seem like your losing more money, but actually I think you lose more on the quarters! tongue.gif You don't always have to play 9 lines either. The $69 hand pay came from a 5 line bet. Granted, it probably would have been more if we had played 9, but that's not a bad return for .75 (5 lines x 3 nickels)!

We found we had better luck this time and all we played was nickels and dollars! :D

I never tried nickels until our last trip. I had several hand pays from them but you sure can go through some money quickly if you bet max. I did see one hand pay that really tickled me. I was waiting for a hand pay at Fitzgeralds and a youg girl nest to me was not doing very well but had put a 50.00 in. She was down to about 15.00 and I guess she did not want all those nickels when she cashed out so she fed about 3 or 4 20.00's in and then hit her light. She got her hand payout.

Only in Las Vegas!!

Well brandy, i needed you to teach me how to play this last trip! tongue.gif I played nicle slots at Harrah's while we were wasting time before a show. I was totally confused as to what I was doing, but pleasanly surprised when the credits started racking up. I had no idea what I was doing :D hahaha

Lmadrid: You sound like me the first time I played. I actually made money playing with 1 nickel! :D

Once I got the hang of them I enjoyed them even more. They also have the same machines for quarters and even dollars, however, they're too rich for my blood!

I, too, like to play nickel slots. I find my money lasts longer, even though I don't win huge jackpots. With the quarter machines my money is gone quickly. I don't usually bet max coins on the video slots that can accept 45 or more nickels per spin, however, and I don't spend a lot of time on these machines. I like the stupid old reel slots! redface.gif One important thing I learned is to check the machine's pay tables to see if there's an advantage to playing max coins or not. If it's a "multiplier" machine, each successive coin multiplies the base payoffs, so there's no real advantage to playing max coins. If it's a "bonus" machine, the max coins in will give you bonus money with certain combinations, so you should play max.

I'd be interested in hearing others' money management strategies on the video slots. Do you bet one coin per line? Or multiple coins on just a few lines? What has been successful for you? I may try a little more time on these machines on our next trip. Thanks everyone! :D

I like to play Texas Tea and Yahtzee nickel slots. I usually play 3 lines, 1 bet per line (so 15 cents a bet) This way I have a chance at a win on each line, but am not spending $2.25 per roll. I mainly play those games so I can sit for a long time on little money, get free drinks & people watch. I love getting the bonuses in Texas Tea, and I'm getting slightly better at the Yahtzee bonus :D A very kind woman sitting next to me on my first trip to Vegas told me I'd never get anywhere if I ONLY bet one coin per roll, that I should at least do three lines, so I've been taking that advice ever since. On the last trip to Vegas, I faced my greatest challenge--trying to explain Yahtzee in French to a very kind but perplexed French woman sitting next to me. Now, at one time I was fluent in French, but haven't spoken much in years. Also, studying at a french speaking university doesn't really prepare you with the vocabulary necessary to explain gambling....Oh well--she understood enough, and was grateful I was trying to help, so it ended well. I was jealous when she won about $50 and I had nothing to show for my efforts :(

When I first started playing nickels I played 3 lines, then 5 and now the least I play is 9x1. When I was learning to play a woman sitting next to me told me that whatever I do "cover my lines." I didn't follow her advice until after a couple of times that I would have won the jackpot had I played 9 lines. That has happened to me also with quarter and dollar machines when you have to play maximum in order to get the $$$.

I've been reading all the posts on this topic with interest. I've only played the nickel video slots a couple of times and never had great luck, but always played max coins in because I never understood them too well. So my money went too fast. I think I'll give them another spin (pardon the pun) when I'm there next week! (My quickie one day trip!) Thanks for all the tips!

I almost always play 9 lines x 1 coin. Just look at the pay tables and be sure you're not ripping yourself off though. Often the big jackpots are only available if you're playing max coins.

Even on the 1-3 line reel games, you have to play 2 or 3 coins to get the jackpot.

The "Las Vegas Advisor" has a very interesting article about the return on nickel slots in Vegas. It lists the return from EACH casino. http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com/loosestslots.cfm
