My first post, I'm glad I found this site! Good job.
Anywayz...
I read something about a birthday rate on this site but there was not enough information. My girlfriend and I are going in April for her 21st birthday.
I was also wondering about the 20 dollar slip with the credit card? What will that insure?
thanks

Welcome to the board. It’s my first post also.
I personally don’t know of any hotels that give special rates ‘cause of birthdays, anniversaries, etc. You could try calling the hotel you’re interested in staying at and see if they do offer such a discount. Again, I’m new on the board and I didn’t see the earlier post that your refer to in your post.
I’m guessing’ that the “20 dollar slip with credit card” refers to the technique of trying to secure a better room by “tipping” the desk clerk $20, right?
When you reach the check-in desk, have in your hand a folded in-half twenty-dollar bill. Bounce it up and down very casually and absentmindly on the counter as you would, say, a credit card. Be very nonchalant. The clerk WILL notice.
When the desk clerk begins taking your registration information, just ask the following: Do you have an upgrade available FOR THE PRICE I AM CURRENTLY PAYING FOR MY ROOM. If the clerk does say YES you can tip him/her the $20.
If the clerk says NO, you can put the twenty dollars back in your wallet without embarrassing the clerk or yourself.
You should note that an upgrade might simply mean a room with a view – such as a room at Bellagio facing the fountains – it doesn’t always mean that you will get a suite.
It would be very helpful to mention that it is your girlfriend’s 21 birthday. Show them her driver’s license so they know it is true. Many people also mention that it is their anniversary, first time in Las Vegas, etc.
A variation of the $20 technique is simply to ask for an upgrade, without flashing any money. Another technique is just to tip the clerk right at the beginning and ask for a better room.
Whether the $20 trick will work depends on the hotel, how full they are, the clerk, etc.
Good luck and hope you have a great vacation.
‘Bye, Kathy
I need to learn how to do the "$20 upgrade" I've tried it at Luxor, Stardust and Venetian and it was politely declined by the desk agent each time. We got a wonderfull room with a great view at Stardust (don't know if it had anything to do with my attempt). The offer got us nothing at Luxor and Venetian, though the room at Venetian was incredible.
Maybe I should let my wife try checking in next time???
