I have a chance to stay at the Golden Nugget in July for 7 days/nights at a good rate, but I have only been to Vegas once before, and stayed on the strip at the Aladdin. Im a bit nervous about downtown, since I havent seen it or know anything about it. Can you give me some info on the downtown casinos? Are the comps, play, and atmosphere more midrange than strip?
We are a 40 something couple looking for midrange prices and enjoy the simple things in life, no need for the high end foods or flash.

Do they have coffee pots in the rooms at the GN?
Are there lots of other casinos to walk to and play slots at? How is the bathroom at the GN?

Thanks for any info and help you can give me.

Here are some pictures of the GN rooms - http://www.travel2vegas.com/noind/nugget.html

GN is the only four star hotel downtown. There are two towers. The North Tower is accessed from the casino near Fremont Street. It's been newly renovated. The South Tower is in the back of the hotel and the elevator lets you out right by the coffee shop and the doors to the parking garage. I prefer the South Tower to be close to the car, but if you're spending most of your time in the GN casino and on Fremont Street, you might want the North Tower.

The casinos are all VERY close as they are just across Fremont Street. Fremont Street is closed to traffic and is covered by a canopy and there are a number of vendors selling things like t-shirts, blown glass, etc.

I love staying downtown. We love Main Street Station which is actually 1 block off of Fremont Street on Main St and Ogden. We love their brewery and buffet. We enjoyed our stay at GN very much. At the time their slot club didn't track play under $1 slots, so we didn't play much there. We put in a lot of play at Main Street and Binions. Since they've opened up their slot club to lower denominations, we've played there a couple of times.

There's actually a lot of great stuff to do and see downtown. I love nighttime on Fremont Street with the light shows, the neon museum at the far end and all the performers on the street, etc. You can see the schedule at http://www.vegasexperience.com

If you go to the GN website here - http://www.goldennugget.com/pages/accom_guestrooms.asp they have pictures and info about the rooms. It says that they have hairdryers, irons, ironing boards, and safes. I don't remember coffee makers in the rooms and their website doesn't say anything about them. I do seem to recall that they had a continental breakfast from room service and you could get a carafe of coffee and some pastries sent up for a fairly reasonable rate.

Hope this helps.

I love downtown and the Golden Nugget is an awesome property..would have no qualms about staying there. My hubby & I are also close to that age, and we really enjoy having everything in nice close proximity, the service at the Nugget is terrific, the staff wonderful....can't say a bad thing about it. You can always catch a bus or a cab to head to the strip..we always do that, but freemont is a nice place to hang in the evenings. The street performers are usually very talented as well, and there's such a nice feeling about the area. The Nugget had a coffee pot in the room in the south tower we stayed at last year, but I don't know about no, with that health regulation thing with washing of coffee pots. I'm sure you'd love the Nugget....!have fun.

Downtown Rocks!

I'm 25, more of a drinker than a gambler and I prefer downtown over the strip any day. It seems to attract a much older crowd (wich doesn't bother me a bit) because of the old school vegas style.

The Golden Nugget is a great hotel, I prefer the more shady hotels like the old Mint, whick is a part of Binions now and the California. Gangsta style.

I have grown to love Fremont Street. Four years ago when I started going to Las Vegas it was The Strip or nothing. Now I am considering saying downtown on my next trip (probably Golden Nuget or Main St. Station).

I like Fremont Street because:
1. The table limits are often lower than on the strip, so if you've ever wanted to learn how to play craps, let it ride or Caribbean Stud then downtown is the place.
2. Everything downtown is on a more human scale. You can walk the length of Fremont St. in 10 minutes.
3. The casinos are right there. Take ten steps from the street and you are playing slots or at the tables. See what 10 steps from the street gets you at Caesars or Ballys.

You will see a variety of people on Fremont Street. Remember, you are downtown and Fremont Street is a public space so you will see all kinds (i.e. bums). I have never had any problems nor have I heard of anyone having troubles. Police quite visibly patrol the street and casino security watches... the casinos, so you can feel quite safe walking around. It is quite common to see families (mom, dad & baby) walking Fremont Street late at night.

My husband and stayed at the Golden Nugget late January for six nights and we think it is just great. We are 54 - 60 and really love downtown. Golden Nugget does comp from quarter slots, not sure about nickels. There are very few children downtown compared to the strip. I went out on Fremont Street by myself one night and felt perfectly safe. Saw no problems myself but did hear of one female streaking down Fremont. Someone asked her age and the young man said he did not look at her face. His attention was drawn a bit lower!!! We are already talking about what we will do shen we go again. Enjoy!!! :D

No Coffeepots in the rooms but large cups of coffee in South tower lobby for 1.50 in the morning.
