I am going to Las Vegas (booked in the Stardust)on the 18th April for five days and notice that hotel availability is not brilliant and the prices are higher than the weeks either side. Is there a convention on or something?

According to www.lvol.com (http://www.lvol.com) the only conventions that go over the 18th are California Dietetic Assoc. and Air Force Clinical surgeons. Wireless communications expo starts 4/21--that's 11,000, and National Assoc of Broadcasters ends 4/11--that's 116,000 expected--those are the biggest I found....

Could be April vacations. Our schools get out the last week in april (21st) but in some places they have the preceeding week off. Lots of teachers head out for a week.

It's good that you are checking on the convention thing. Smart thing to check on the schools too. We didn't think about that when we went a couple of weeks ago. We checked all of the conventions and booked our trip after the big construction convention (100,000+) so we thought we were safe, but we were unaware that EVERYONE in the area was on Spring Break. It wasn't too bad in the casinos but walking from place to place was extremely crowded, especially going from the Excalibur to NY, NY (the walkway in front of NY NY was almost impossible!). Just make sure you check the school schedules! Have fun on your trip!

But how do you check the schools? I mean, everyone has breaks at different times, and how do you know who's going to be going to Vegas for that trip? I usually just assume it's going to be really really crowded, and then if it's not, I'm pleasantly surprised :D

Could it be you waited too long to book? Rates go up as the hotels fill (and go down if they don't).
I'll be there the week before at the Fitz for $18/night (booked over a month ago) but current prices are $59 and "no rooms available". Looks like the 9/11 scare is over.
