Grang Canyon Tours

Hi - I want to arrange a trip out to the Grand Canynon during my stay next month and will be booking a tour to save time (as only there for 4 nights).

Can anyone recommend or advise about any of the tours? And where to/not to book etc. Should we book in advance? Ideally we would like to see from all points, ie from the air (helicopter or plane?), on the edge and down by the river if poss but won't be able to stay over night I shouldn't think.

The following is a quote from last October's trip report.

Quote "Wednesday was a flight with Scenic Airlines to the Grand Canyon, somewhat of a disappointment compared with what we were to experience later. I had read other comments on the message boards and it is true that we did not fly the Canyon itself, just part of the less impressive west rim. The coach tour was two stops on the South Rim showing the same view from a slightly different angle and then away for lunch (which was adequate), followed by the flight back. The briefness of the tour coupled with the fact that we were given misleading instructions for pick up left us feeling more than a little let down." end quote

The trip cost $320 for two and did not start off too well when we were not picked up from the Hotel. The instructions to the pick up point were, to say the least, vague. We managed to hitch a lift to North Las Vegas airport to connect with the rest. The company were less than sympathetic.

Then it was explained to us that regulations did not allow flying over the Canyon itself, so, although we did fly along the edge of the West Rim, the flight was really a commuter trip which included a good view of the Hoover Dam and Lake Mead accompanied by a fairly amateur but nevertheless quite interesting headphone commentary.

It may be that we expected too much, it would be interesting to hear anyone else's experiences but if I were to go again I would try and fit an overnight stop in, coupled with a visit to the bottom. :(

So it seems some of the flights go to West rim and others to the South. Either way I know I defo wanna get to the bottom of the Canynon and see the river etc..

Is there an advantage of copter over plane?
