I dropped my mom off at the airport on Saturday. Leaving McCarran on Swenson, I was pulled over for speeding. Motorcycle cop caught me as I was coming down the hill. Busted for 54mph in a 35mph zone. I thought it was 45mph through there, but I was wrong. While I was waiting on my ticket, 4 others were pulled over. The officer said they monitor the area regularly because trop/swenson intersection has the second highest number of accidents in the city. So, FYI, watch your speed when leaving the airport.

On a related note...

This is my first ticket ever. The officer said to do traffic school, to avoid $300 fine for speeding. The ticket gets reduced to a parking ticket and I'll have no points on my license. Sounds like a far better alternative than when Frank hired the ticket terminators for his, that route cost us nearly $450 said and done. Anyone care to share their ticket experiences?

Mikey has talked about his--didn't he end up doing traffic school online?

I got one a while back (here in TX) and did an online course to get it dismissed or whatever. Still had to pay court fees, a fee to get my driving record or whatever, and the fee for the 'course'. It cost roughly what the ticket would have cost but it didn't go on to my record or make my insurance go up or anything. If they have the same thing in NV with the online course, it's easy and convinient (sp?), so that might be a good route to go.

If I recall Mikey's experience correctly, his "traffic school" was easy, but NOT convenient. They only allowed each question or lesson or whatever to scroll forward at a certain, very slow rate.

My first and only speeding ticket was in 1995 when I was traveling south on route 23 in Ohio through Delaware, OH. I got caught by the AIRPLANE! Up until then, I didn't know that was possible. The plane "clocks" you, calls forward to the staties who are on the side of the road ahead, and they actually pull you over.

I was then pulled over the VERY NEXT WEEK, but got off because the little towny cop was a moron. He said I didn't have a front license plate and was NINE miles over the limit. My plate was just offset to the side, so that wizard didn't see it for some reason. Aside from that, I've been pulled over 3 additional times, once including when I had my football referee uniform on coming back from a game I had just worked, but never got another ticket. They were all in bogus little towny speed trap zones, and I never tried to bulls**t or play dumb. I just admitted I was speeding and they let me go.

Heh. Amateurs.

I've had well over 20 moving violations, including 11 in a 6-year period. Been nabbed by cars, motorcycles and planes...pretty much everything but a Mountie on a horse.

Speed - that's pretty much my only vice.

Oh yeah, and gambling. :wave2:

And uh, alcohol. :drunk:

Errrr, and women. :wink2:

Heh. I think the cop was blowing smoke... he told me the ticket would cost me about $60 if I go to traffic school.

My $300 ticket for doing 50-something in a 35 on Eastern was reduced to around $120 or so, if I recall, and it was changed to a 'parking violation' instead of a moving violation, so no points or anything hit my insurance. Also, the online school was $35 in addition to the fees, but once that pain in the ass was over, I just called the number they gave me at court and paid the $120 over the phone with my Mastercard.

Then I was free from the clutches of the Clark County Justice Court.

But overall, except for the fees, it was a pretty painless ordeal. The worst was sitting there taking the online test where you couldn't page through to the end. You had to sit on each screen for like 20 minutes, and it would tell you that you were 'reading it too fast'. Set some time aside to finish that little project. Oh, and you can't use Firefox as your browser when doing it, you'll have to use IE. (Luckily I have the Firefox extension that renders a tab as IE at the click of a button...)

I've gotten a few speeding tickets in my lifetime (4 in total). My most recent one was in May of this year. I was clocked doing 75 in a 65 zone (just seconds earlier I had been doing 85, so I was fortunate I wasn't pulled over earlier). A friend of mine works for a lawyer and has told me to NEVER just pay a speeding ticket, but to check the "Not Guilty" box and mail it in (I'm not sure if it's the same in every state, but here in Connecticut when you get a speeding ticket you either pay it, or plead not guilty then mail it in with your check if applicable). When pleading not guilty, a few things can happen. One, you get a letter giving you a court date, which happened on my two previous tickets. Both times the fines were cut in half. Or, the ticket is revoked if you pay the amount of fine to a charity. Or, you get a letter saying the charges are nolled (obviously the best letter to receive, lol). For my ticket in May, I received the third letter. Yup, the charge was dropped and the ticket thrown out.

Figured I'd offer an update. Found out this morning my plan of traffic school and paying a reduced fine is not possible. After much hassle, I was told the law has changed and speeding violations are no longer reduced to parking violation after traffic school is completed. Supposedly, the law passed last year and went into effect Oct 1st, but I was unable to find any articles to comfirm. It looks like I'm left with three options: pay $300 and receive 2 points on my license, pay $335 and take 5 hr traffic course to keep a clean DMV record or plead not quilty and request a hearing.

my son is an out of state student at UNLV for the second year. His car still has out of state plates, and he has an out of state license. He was pulled over the other day... that'd be $500.00 thank you... and the officer wrote him for not only speeding, but not registering his car / obtaining a NV license within 90 days of moving to NV.... kinda hard to do when you're not a resident of the state ! And for financial stuff, he has to stay as a out of state student... the officer said if he had his student ID, he had to go to court with proof of enrollement and his student ID. WHAT A MESS !
