View Full Version : The Right (or Wrong) Turn

Can somebody fill me in on what the big deal is with the new "right turn" out of the airport??? I supposedly live in this affected area (the northwest) as my apartment complex is literally 2 blocks from Summerlin. I do notice the plane noise every once in a while, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest! I watched a little bit of the most recent city council meeting today (yes, I was that bored) and there were some people complaining that they couldn't have a normal conversation while sitting in their backyards because the jet noise was so deafening! I can't imagine that 2 blocks makes THAT much of a difference! Are these people just complaining to here themselves talk, or am I missing something?
I AM looking to move out of here as soon as possible, but not because of the jet noise. It's due to my new job AND the fact that we're surrounded on ALL sides by idiots who play their music WAY too loud along with their screaming kids at all hours.......which makes the jet noise pale in comparison!! If the plane noise was as bad as people are making it out to be, it should drown out all of the idiots and actually improve my quality of life, right? :-)

I work up in that area too, and notice more jet traffic. It doesn't annoy me, it's barely noticeable above the constant din that is Rainbow Blvd (apparently one of Vegas' Autobahn roads where you can drive as fast as you want).
I think the residents of Summerlin are unhappy because previously they didn't have to deal with ANY airplane noise and now there is some. The planes are high enough in the air by the time they reach the northwest part of the city that I really can't see it being an issue. I still see the jets turning south to do the U-turn around by Henderson too, so it's not like any one area of the city is getting ALL the "noise".

I've tried to make sense of it, but I can't. People bitched and moaned about Red Rock Hotel Towers, too, I never understood that one either. I see more planes flying overhead, but noise hasn't become more of an issue. I think people have too much time, look for a reason to complain or failed to notice that they live in a major metropolitan area. Bottom line is large cities have noise pollution, Las Vegas has become a large city.
Admittedly, I'm biased. I grew up in Chicago, with planes, trains, cars and semi-trucks coming and going regularly. I think the people who are so concerned by the noise should invest in some sound-proof windows for their homes.

I too, live in Chicago. When I grew up, I lived around Cumberland and the Kennedy Expressway. (originally the expressway was't even there) The Kennedy is almost a visual arrow on the ground for incoming plane traffic. The plane noise was something that the original locals never complained about. However, as more development insued and as others bought existing properties, complaints grew. Now why you would buy a property next to an airport, and then complain about noise? This is a question that has no answer. Perhaps it's because " I live there now and don't want it" is their justification. This should have been a concern prior to purchase, not afterwards. Perhaps many of your complainers fall into this catagory. I moved in, let the airport move out. (or change their normal operations to suit me) People love to fix things after the fact, even when their own decisions caused their own problems.
