... the US do today? Anybody?
My only true interest in the cup is the fact that the last time I saw a game, my wall safe was bulging.

I had it on good authority that the US was playing a Czech team riddled with injuries.

Play nice, or don't play at all.....
I thought the saying was, "If you're not cheating, you're not trying???"
(notice I spelled you're correctly!!!):wink2:
The US got worked plain and simple. They were scored on and then they shut down. Yes, I watch soccer... Especially when its cup time. So, if that makes me lame, I'm lame.
What kills me is that everyone I have heard on TV says this is the team that could do the best out of the last 3 or 4. Unless they were laying down for the odds makers, I just dont see it! I hope I'm wrong, because every other sport the US is supposed to dominate, we just don't. Too many egos and big heads for the other sports, and hopefully soccer might be different.
Oh yeah, CURLING RULES!!!!!:wink2:

Thank you for your proper usage.
My husband made me watch Olympic curling. God I can't stand it. But we only watched it when there wasn't any hockey, figure skating or ice dancing on, so....:ssst: :haha:

It's because our BEST ATHLETES don't play soccer. Plain and simple!

Bobby, I hate to disagree with you here but anyone who is fit enough to play soccer is a hero in my book. That field is huge and they are constantly running back and forth over and over again chasing that damn ball. You may not think they are our best athletes but I give them a lot of credit. It takes a ton of athletic ability to do what these players do and they are among the best in the world. The USA might not be great in soccer but they are damn fine athletes.
Jer, I agree with you. I saw the game yesterday and the team looked horrible. It looked that once they gave up that goal they gave up. I was very impressed with the coverage though. I am not really a big fan but I was enjoying it.

I know I shouldn't, but I'll bite.... Mods, forgive me but I just have to...
Bobby, what do our "best atheletes" play? I'm just curious... And please, spare no detail, I'm completely interested in your theory on this. I goota say this though... I think your statement is ridiculous, but that's just my opinion.:)

Well, you've got David Wells for baseball, recently retired Tony Siragusa for football (not futbol). Basketball is a little tougher. Hockey, ever see a pudgy hockey player? With that much padding on, how would you know?
Dammit Doc, I'm talking about the obvious ones like Stanley Roberts,John Daly, and Sabastian Janakowski. Oh yeah, and Charlie Kerfeld....
:haha:

Daly only comes into it if you theorize that golf is a "sport" played by "athletes", but that's it's own thread.

So if you follow a team or a sport closely, does that make you an athletic "supporter"? Just askin'...

Doc, thanks to Mikey, I have to say any sumo wrestler.

Sumo, what a concept. "Let's find the biggest guys we can, put 'em in a thong and watch'em wrestle!" I believe that is pretty close to dead last on the list of things I want to see.

I had a stats professor (with a japanese wife) who was a big sumo fan (sorry, no pun intended) We had lots of homework assignments using sumo wrestling examples....Very very strange. But then in high school, my physics teacher was a bugs bunny fan and lots of our physics homework used Wile E Coyote & Roadrunner.....I guess the fact that these examples stuck with me means the teachers chose wisely??
I got into a big fight (verbal) with a guy at a bar (in DC) about whether or not Nascar was a "sport". Since I moved to NC, I keep my mouth shut about my opinions on that:haha:

Jer,
Since Bobby won't pick up the gauntlet, our best athletes are playing football, baseball, and basketball. That's where all the money, glory, and pretty cheerleaders are. It may be very true that our soccer players are currently fitter than the players in the big three sports, but they aren't nearly as athletic.
Do you truly believe that if the players on every professional sports roster in America had all decided as kids to focus on soccer that 10% of our national team could even make the roster? I'm not sure one could.
I hear ya...
But how do you know? I think our best atheletes play ALL the sports they are best at. So, just because a soccer player can't pancake a d-lineman in football, or hit a 95 mph fastball, or take Shaq to the hole doesn't mean they aren't our greatest atheletes. Lets see baseball players run up and down the field all day and then put that crazy curve on a soccer ball to score a goal. That's tough to do.
I just think it is absurd to say our "best " atheletes only play football, soccer, and baseball. Watching those dumb ESPN NFL football players making themselves look silly trying to play other sports contests.
I'm not attacking anyone here. I respect the opinions of all, and I thank you for "picking up the guantlet"....:)
And this coming from a die hard baseball, football, and basketball fan!!!!!

How about the "Ironman?"
Don, what does a Timex watch have to do with the current conversation going on here? Just sayin'...:jester:

Endurance athletes are CRAZY! The guy who led our Outing Club trips when I was in high school was an endurance athlete--my senior year, he competed in (I think won, or else placed in the top 3) a Triple Ironman. That's THREE marathons. Plus, you know, some swimming and biking thrown in just for fun. He was nuts. But in very very good shape:wiggle:

I disagree, I think there's something to it. It's not uncommon to find a good athlete who does well at several sports. At some point you generally have to pick one, and then which one is it? IMO, I think it's basketball, then football, then baseball. There's always some that go the other way, but I think the "athlete" will go towards the most demanding sport -- that also happens to be lucrative, and bring you fame. (Which futbol would overseas, but most folks don't move if they don't have to.)
p.s. running isn't a sport, it's an untreated neurosis.

WOW, I guess my comment really started some thinking here.
Each and everyone here will have a somewhat different opinion on what constitutes a athlete. So here is why I made that post that our BEST ATHLETES don't play soccer.
A Great ATHELETE is BIG - STRONG and FAST and have special skills to his own sport. Some Super Athletes that come to mind are Bo Jackson, Michael Jordon, Bruce Smith and A Rod.
My thoughts on golf, bowling, bass fishing and similar activities where your so called opponent has NOTHING to do with how well you finish is RECREATION and NOT a sport.
NASCAR is mechanical and also not a sport in my book.
Only 12 more weeks to the Real FOOTBALL Season ! ! ! But for now Batter Up ! ! !
