A month into the season and some of the numbers from the 26 starters who participated in the WBC are astounding. These are the chosen ones who are supposed to be among the best pitchers in the league. Only 7 of the 26 currently have winning records and the total W/L among them is 50-62 with a 5.58 average ERA. Leo Mazzone, former Braves & current Orioles pitching coach, had complained before the WBC that such a competitive event might prompt pitchers to go all out before their arms were ready for it. Six of the WBC starters are currently on the DL and Mets starter Victor Zambrano is done for the season.

As a fan of the game, you have to question whether the timing of the WBC is a good thing or not. As a gambler, you should take into consideration whether or not the pitcher that you are throwing your hard earned cash at is still recovering from the WBC. Some pitchers like Johan Santana have rebounded well from slow starts, but others like Dontrelle Willis have not. Food for thought.

Balckjack,

You have made an excellent point and now the Mets are without a starter for at least a full year. Although I think the idea of the WBC is a good one doing it before the season started in my opinion was irresponsible for the MLB. Players are going to play it is in their blood the commissioner and other people who make the rules should worry about safety first.
