Life in St. Croix

Hey everyone! I have been missing from the board pretty much for the last 3 weeks so I htought I would drop in and say hello. I am consulting at a hospital in St. Croix, in the Caribbean. I must say that it has great perks, and some not so great ones as well. I am beginning to feel a little homesick. Guess it must be the fastly appraching holidays. Anway, I have to stay here for 2 weeks, then I go home for the weekend, then return for another 2 weeks, etc. My first weekend here I went on a sunset sailing cruise around the island. It was absolutely beautiful! They were serving rum punch and we were listening to Jimmy Buffet. The sunset was incredible and the feel of the breeze blowing over me was very relaxing. There are some great little shops here as well. The cruise ships are not coming here at the moment because the pier is being refurbished, so most shops close up at 5pm (just the time I am leaving the hospital). I have a beautifully furnished condo that sits right on the beach. I look at the turquoise water every morning before I leave for work and think to myself...Paradise! On the down side, the electricity goes off and on quite a bit. The phone service is the same way. There is no wireless internet capability that I have been able to find. Dial-up is VERY s-l-o-w. And the real bummer is that I have zero cell phone coverage here. Good ole...Verizon. Everyone else's works though. There is a webcam here on the pier at a place called Rum Runners. I was dancing like a crazy woman for the camera last night. If you go to www.GoToStCroix.com you can see the webcam.

My hubby is in Vegas this week and I am on Gilligan's Island.....wish I were in Vegas!!! MM3 won't be here soon enough for me. I can't wait to see all of you fun people again! Stay in touch!!

Oh - - there IS a casino here called the Divi Carina Resort & Casino. It's pretty nice. There's also the Cruzen Rum Factory...hmmm.....MM3 goodie bags???

Cyndi--gee, I feel really terrible for you--you're in paradise and you can't find an INTERNET connection and your CELL PHONE doesn't work.....Oh my goodness. Just get yer butt over to the rum factory pronto and you won't care!!!!

Hoya - - I'm a Healthcare Financial Consultant. I basically work with the Hospital CFO's and Business Office Directors to see if their billing practices are compliant with the government and also to see if they are getting maximum reimbursement. It's pretty detailed and tedious at times, but it's a great paycheck.

As far as the Rum Factory goes...haven't been there yet but I will probably take the tour this weekend. I could also catch the seaplane over to St. Thomas and get started on my Christmas shopping.

Seriously, it gets kinda lonely when you're here without the one(s) you love. I have some really cool friends I work with, but it's still not quite the same. Wish I had visitors!!! Who wants a free place to stay in St. Croix for a week????

Dave P: There's always room for more down here, no matter what you do! I can tell you the IT dept at this place STINKS. It took them 2 days to re-activate my Meditech sign-on.

There's an oil refinery here (HUGE) and lots of contractors from the US are here working long term contracts too.

The people her eare very gracious, but it is a poor island. Without the cruise ships coming in, they are suffering.

A lot of people I did my master's with went into healthcare administration but it holds no appeal to me at all! I used to work for a consultant (organization & women's health care) I like research a lot more. No big paycheck, but that's ok--I don't have kids I have to get through college, just myself:jester: ....I have a couple of friends who are consultants and they bitch about the downside a lot. Takes good friends like me to point out the perks (of which I'm jealous, of course;) ) I know what Mikey has on his Christmas list, if you're heading to St Thomas.....

Should've typed a disclaimer: I've never been to St Croix. I've been to St John & St Thomas and Virgin Gorda but it's been a long time.....I cannot swear to you there will be thongs and breasts there. It just seems like a good bet.....

I've heard Foxy's on Jost Van Dyke has topless babes in thongs on New Years Eve if you looking for that kind of thing. I was only there during daylight hours so I really did not see them, just heard about them. :wink2:

Just gotta say, you'll get no sympathy from me, girl. This afternoon my employers decided it would be a good idea to have a fire drill....yeah, that was a Great idea, snow flurries, 30 mile an hour winds and about 27 degrees. Then to top it off I leave work tonight, get in my car...let me just say that those leather seats get damn cold in the winter, hey, no problem, I'll just turn on the bun warmers....s**t, they aren't working. :grrr:

So, if that condo is still available for a week, I'd love to come visit....dangit, I have no vacation time til January...:(

Hey Angy - - YOU are the queen of the hip action. I'm working on it though. Go to the webcam tonight www.gotostcroix.com and I will be on there. I will be there at 6pm atlantic time, which is 5pm eastern, 4pm central, etc.

I will probably still be assigned to this project in January. So, let's talk some more about when you can make it!

I will send pictures probably over Thanksgiving weekend. The dial up connection here is really slow and to download/upload anything is a MAJOR ordeal.
