Great new forum!! My wife and I will be retiring in a few years. Most likely we will be staying right here in the heart of America, but we have day dreamed about moving to Vegas. Does the glitz get old after a while? Curious what those who made the jump think of retirement living in Sin City.

I’ve lived in Vegas for nearly two years and my love for the city continues to grow everyday. The day might come when the glitz will fade, but until then I adore living Las Vegas.
I am only 25, but I was lucky enough to get sampling of retirement living. When we arrived, we lived with my husband’s grandma for 2 weeks. She had a home in Sun City Summerlin. It is lovely age-restricted, 55 and older, community. The community offers plenty of activities and residents have access to golf courses, club houses and pools. She moved into her home in 1995. She had an extraordinary view from her backyard. She loved living there and I truly believe living in Vegas kept her young. Had she not lost her battle with thyroid cancer, today, she’d still be tapping away at nickel video poker, collecting 2 for 1 coupons and her free gifts.
It was the life - garden in the mornings, meet with friends early afternoon, hit a buffet for lunch, and gamble a bit after. Then, spend a few hours at the pool swimming and socializing. Return home in time for Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune. Read a book, call family, read email, etc. then it’s time for bed. It was a treat to have that time share with her before we were swept into our own daily routines and into the working world. Frank and I thoroughly enjoyed our taste of retirement and we look forward to the future when we’ll be able to live the life.

I love living in the country now, but I think about retirement in the far distant future--I'd prefer to be in a community where I could walk (or Scooter ;) ) around. I still think Vegas is too dang hot for me to live in, though.....I have joked with my husband when we're gambling in Vegas that he could always be a slot repairman in his retirement, but we don't know what my retirement job would be--Vegas is far too customer-relations oriented for me to be any good

Hmmm, maybe I could work at a casino instead graemlins/laughing.gif then my hubby could go golfing for the day  It could be the best of both worlds for us. graemlins/biggthumpup.gif I might have to propose this to him.

We've been to Vegas every year for the past 18 years. I said to my wife I would like to move to Vegas after I retire, she was always negative about that. I've been retired just under 2 years. Now my hope is to move to Vegas before my days end!

I'm moving to Vegas when I win Powerball this Wednesday evening. Then we'll have a nice party for MM3 in the penthouse at Turnberry Towers!

Angy, this will be in addition to my house in Kauai. Which of course will be a nice place to hang out with my T2V buds. Ok, when I win that powerball jackpot, meet me in Vegas, then I'll rent a plane (oh hell, why not just buy it?) and fly everyone to Kauai for a luau on the beach. Sound good everyone? graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Hate to burst your bubble Kikky, but the jackpot is mine and I'm already in negotiation to buy The Turnberry! graemlins/laughing.gif
The problem with Kauai is you can't own the land your house is on. Personally, I'm buying an island in the Caribbean.

Bill, it's true that some properties in Kauai (and all of Hawaii) are Lease-held, but others are sold so that you DO own the land the house is on. You just have to be sure you know what you're buying.

It was my understanding that all the land in Hawaii was permanently deeded to the Hawaiians and could not be sold and that the only land owned by non-hawaiians was that which was orginally deeded to the original 3 missionary families (consisting of tens of thousands of acres). That's what I remember from my visits there.

There are certain lands deeded to Hawaiians only Bill, but they are rather limited. The traditional ahupua`a in the Hawaiian Homelands are pie-shaped wedges of land, stretching from the mountains to the sea. On O`ahu, the predominant Hawaiian Homelands are in the Waimanalo area on the windward side, and in Nanakuli and Waianae on the leeward side. That which isn't military (which is a LOT) in between is privately owned. Large chunks of acreage that are privately owned are owned by the families that brought industry to Hawaii (think Dole and Castle and Cook). But it is possible own land. My sister does.
In Kaua`i, there was a section of land that was supposed to be set aside for the Hawaiians as ahupua`a in the Wailua area. Somehow, instead, the land was sold to a developer who is putting multi-million dollar homes on the site. I don't know the politics behind what happened, but it feels to me like someone got massively screwed over. Fittingly, the last time I was by there (March '04) there was still not a single house constructed there, after 2 years of having the roads built and utility lines laid.

Thanks, Kikky. It was a very long time ago that I got that info.....
