What is the dress code of most night spots? Are nice dress shorts aloud?

By most, I assume you mean THE spots, like Studio 54, V, Rain, etc.
Let me ask you this?
When you watch Soul Train, are the guys wearing "nice dress shorts"?
Any MTV show where they show folks at the nitespots, are the guys in shorts, albeit dress ones?
Any show where you see happening people out partying on TV, are the guys wearing dress shorts? graemlins/eek5.gif graemlins/nono.gif
You're in Vegas, dude! Get some clubbin' clothes!!
Now if you're looking for some of the smaller out of the way places, I'm sure you'll be cool. what do you others think?

Actually those are not the places I was talking about. I was just talking about any of the hotel bars in generally. And not to be rude but I am not a dude.

Most of the low key hotel bars would probably be cool with nice shorts. Some are a little more upscale in the more expensive resorts, and dress slacks would probably be more appropriate. But, most places that aren't labled as "clubs" wont have a strict dress code.
What I always do is just glance in and see how everyone else is dressed. That's usually the best indication. ;)

I do the shorts during the day but always wear dress pants in the evening (on the strip). To me the Strip is one big cocktail party, so I dress accordingly, which becomes part of the fun. Buy some new stuff for the trip, make it an event. Manage the heat aspect by not going outside much, if at all, using cabs, etc.
That said, no one's going to throw you out of a hotel bar based on dress code. My buddy never wore long pants, or even decent looking shorts, and we hung out in Bellagio and Mandalay Bay, among other places.
Downtown is much more casual, that's part of the appeal. graemlins/biggthumpup.gif

Are you going on the weekend or during the week? People going to the clubs in the hotels seemed to be dressed up more on the weekends. We went to a club during the week this last time. We were told there was dress code so we made sure to dress up. I was suprised to see what some people were wearing (T-shirts and bad looking tennis shoes).

Some places don't have a problem with shorts. Most of the lounges in the casinos would fit into that category. Anything goes.. well, almost anything.
Once you get into the clubs, some are okay with nice shorts, but no sneakers. Some clubs are more strict about clothing and say no shorts (Like Ra at Luxor) They also say no jeans unless you also wear a button down shirt and jacket.
Depends on where you want to go. The "hot" clubs all pretty much have a dress code, but if you're talking about the lounges in the casinos, you should be okay. I usually bring along a skirt or something just in case.
