hey ... this place is alllllllright
I don't shoot dice or play cards or slots, so the race books are how I judge where to go ...
Palms is OK
$300 bucks opens an account and gets you a nice chair with your own betting terminal ..personal tv screen and comfortable
great deal .... I like it
half the room, and a pretty good sized room it is, is non smoking .. half smoking ...
plenty of tellers, should one wish to bet via ticket from a live person, didn't get shut out a single time ...
pleasant folks, good coctail service, enough room to not feel cramped, but good live feel ....
it isn't quite as "elaborate" as CP or Bellagio as NO large screens up on the walls ...
but every seat has a private tv ...
I can tell anyone who bets horseraces that this place is FINE ...
and the coffee shop, as well as the buffet is very good, too ...
prices are about as good as one can find ...
for example ..
breakfast buffet was 6bucks
lunch was 7bucks
and the coffee shop prices were comparable ...
hey .. I'm going back ...... gggggg

add to last post ...
didn't see how to edit so I'll add this to the message
I didn't mean to imply that the ONLY folks who got their own tv were the ones with setting up the $300 account ..
not at all
for that, in addition to the tv you get your own private betting terminal ..
BUT
there is, down front, dozen and a half windows ==== five or six or seven betting tellers/windows open when I was there this weekend ... room for MORE should the demand warrant
BUT
every seat in the large room has a private tv ...each and every one .. NOT just the ones with the private betting terminals ...
as I said , I like this place ..... gggggg

horse, since it sounds like you do a fair amount of this...
I cased out a bunch of race books a couple weeks back, and saw a lot of "reserved" signs on the desks with the tv's. Are these "permanently reserved" or does it work like you described in the Palms, open an account and get a reserved desk?
Is there a minimum for opening an account?
As far as drink service, it seemed like if you weren't in the race book desk section, they didn't bother sending a waitress your way... your thoughts?

doctor al ...
I've been in the race game a long time as I bet my first race at OP back in 1963....
I've been going to Vegas a long time as I made my first trip back in 1959....
so, yes, I guess one could say I do a fair amount of this ..... gggggg
as to my knowledge, now that is a much different thing ... it seems as if my brain has atrophied with age, and I didn't have much up there to spare anyway ....
concerning the "reserved for xxxx" signs
most casinos I've sat down to wager for, say a couple of hours, there have been open seats available, but not too many with the private tvs .. those seem to have a goodly sum of these "reserved" signs ....
BUT
that said, there were, at the places I liked ... CP and Bellagio ... several LARGE screens visable and multi smaller ones .. so, there was plenty of racing viewing available for ALL
at the Palms .. and I don't get any recompense for promoting them here OR anywhere.... each and every seat had a tv .. although there was NO large screen .. a lot of fairly large ones all the way across the top of the front of the r/b .. say ... oh ... fifteen or more ...
you asked >>>>> "is there a minimum for opening an account" =======
yes, $300 dollars
you said >>>>> " As far as drink service, it seemed like if you weren't in the race book desk section, they didn't bother sending a waitress your way... your thoughts?" ======
well, at the Palms, everything is a racebook desk section .... and, a waitress came by my chair at least twice between my drinks >>>>> that is to say that I'd order a drink and before I'd completely finish it, she'd be by once, and about the time I'd get through, she'd be back within five minutes or so ....
I never had to "turn and look for her" ...
very very good service, as far as I'm concerned ...
and I'm not a big tipper .... and I'm old and fat and bald and ugly and have a wedding ring *(40 years to the same ol gal), so I guess that was just regular kinda service ..... gggggggg
this past weekend, for example, I got to the r/b and picked out my seat/chair/desktop/tv area down close to the front as far away as I could get from the smoking area about 9:30am ---- few minutes before the first race started ----- and stayed until around 4:00pm ----- both Sat and Sun ....
so, I'm not an expert by far, but that much time at one casino r/b does tend to give me a feel for how I like it .....
CP and Bellagio and Palms are all fine
but
due to the private tv and the lack of smoke and the quick beverage service I'm surely favoring the Palms ...
oh yeah .... there is a restroom in the r/b area
another thing I liked ..
there were several locals with whom I got to know on a "who'da like in the next race at Bel" kinda deal ....
and they parked their cars immediately outside the Emergency Exit" door which was about fifteen feet from my desktop .....
they'd go outside several times during the day ...
leave their stuff *( briefcase/laptop/paper/notebooks/etc) ....
now, they did NOT return through that door .. no knocking on it to get someone inside to open it .. but, as perhaps five or six of them went out the "emergency door" it must not be wired to an alarm ... heh heh heh heh
two of them lived within a couple of miles and one guy .. it tickled me ... said he was gonna go home and mow the yard .. he'd be back in a couple of races seeing as how he didn't like anything coming up .... LOL
pretty nice place, as far as I can determine for ME

horse, thanks for all the info and colorful commentary. Looking forward to an afternoon playing the ponies next time out. Don't need the private TV, but drink service is critical ;)
