Hey Mikey,

This update is for you! I just read that the Horseshoe (Binions, right?) just
made some major changes on the casino floor. According to this news,
they've taken out some craps pits, and several blackjack tables to make room
for more slot machines.

Not sure how much (if any) this will effect your playtime at Binion's but
thought you'd like to know in case you hadn't already heard.

All I need is one craps table...

If they keep this up, well, my reasons for going there will go the way of their craps pits and blackjack tables.

We'll reevaluate in October. If it's gotten crummy, I'll be sad, but then, I'll find me a new place to play if I have to. Maybe it's time to give the tables at Main Street Station a try. I know they still have 20x odds on the craps tables. (Well, they did 3 weeks ago...)

Did they say which pits were affected? My guess would be the BJ tables closest to the Race Book, with the 3 craps tables nearest the players club desk, on the "upper" side (the old Mint casino part).

Anybody out there visited in the last week or so and could let us know??

Cruiser...Thanks for the heads up...

Mikey

Mikey,

To see the entire news article, go to http://www.lvrj.com/ and then search on 'horseshoe' and year '2002'. You'll get back a list of 170+ articles. It's about the tenth article down (subject of 'Horseshoe makes changes') and explains what they're doing.

According to Everything Las Vegas, they have removed ALL the crap tables on the west side and cut the east side from 10 to only 7. graemlins/grrr.gif That's almost half of their tables total! Becky claims this is "part of her effort to make the property more efficient"! And she forther claims this will allow them to DISPLAY AUTOS used in their promotions. graemlins/blink.gif This is more efficient? graemlins/goofy.gif

Isn't Binions giving away a car a week or a car a month or something this summer? Thought I read that in LVA.....Cars do get people into a casino who might not otherwise gamble there......(It works for me :D )

Ok, I read the article, and it makes perfect sense. Those 3 craps tables up top are usually the slowest, and are only busy at night. I know, I've spent many many hours in there. Not only that, 2 of those tables were very old and worn, and it was probably more cost effective to get rid of them, and use the space for more profitable slot machines, than to refurbish them.

Those 3 tables, although I liked the location a lot, were much slower than the tables on the original Binions side.

Also, all summer long, they've been giving a car away every Thursday night. And it is parked right there in front of those tables. We were there for the giveaway one night, and they must've had 500-600 people packed in there, who tended to stick around, so it's a great promo to get people in the door.

Remember, the casino is usually only packed to the gills on weekends, (when we're all there), so it's easy to dismiss the changes as just another case of Becky ruining the place. Not true. The casino has to turn a profit Monday thru Thursday, also, so I can see why the changes are necessary.

Now, I love Binions, but I'm no apologist for them. I do see a method to some of the madness. Becky has done a few things right, trying to keep the place profitable. For instance, having the dealers keep their own tips makes it the best place under the canopy to play the tables (Some of them need to tone it down a bit, I will admit). Also, reopening the coffee shop downstairs, taking it out of the old buffet area, was a much needed improvement, too. And this car giveaway generates a TON of foot traffic to the casino.

Anyhow...I think we all have a knee-jerk reaction whenever a favorite casino makes changes, but me, I'll reserve judgement until my next visit.
