Anyone ever stayed at the El Cortez? It is my second favorite gambling location (after Binions) and they keep sending me offers for free rooms. Never stayed here but did visit one of the "Mini-suites" in the tower a few years back. Memory serves me right, it was satisfactory-about a better/large Holiday Inn type room similiar too but better than LVC. Course I'm sure they are only offering ROH so I'd probably wind up in a standard room or one of those small jobs over the casino. Question is-what are they like? I don't require much more than a clean, comfortable room in decent shape to sleep, shower and shave in and I waste/spend as little time as possible in my room. Thinking of it just for myself (no roomate). Any thoughts and /or suggestions?

Andsen...
Just how bad was your room at the LVC? We stayed there last month and it was a very nice room, especially when we considered what we paid. I've stayed at MUCH worse, such as, Stratosphere, Sahara, Circus Circus, and Harrahs (ick graemlins/yuck.gif )
We were VERY impressed with the LVC, granted, we didn't have high expectations, and we stayed in an MVP room in the newer north tower, but we really liked it. Had absolutely no reason to give it a thumbs down. I thought it was a great place, especially if it's just the guys...

I didn't say the LVC was bad! I said that the Cortez mini-suite was better than what I had at LVC-a standard room in the South Tower. It also was nicer than rooms I've had at the Fitz , Hilton, Flamingo, etc. but that's comparing apples to oranges. That's why I'm curiuos about their STANDARD rooms as I'm sure they go down at least a notch or two-hopefully no more than that. It is, after all, Jackie Gaughan's home hotel. Still I would like to know?

MikeyI've been meaning to ask you about that Mikey... I remember recommending the LVC to you if it was just the fellas...made me a bit nervous to make that recommendation...you never know what people's expectations are. Glad you were good with it.

I have stayed at the El Cortez,3nights-4 times
a year, for the last 3 years----Free!!!!
If you hit a jackpot of $250.00 or more, you
become a member of the "4-Seasons Club". The
rooms in the tower are fairly big, with views
of the mountains or the strip. When's was the
last time you opened your window in a hotel,
ON THE 12th FLOOR!!! They have some rooms that
were an old motel, cinderblock walls and all.
Then there are the rooms above the
casino. My favorite rooms in Vegas!! Nothing
like being within CRAWLING distance from your
room! Now before i get started on these rooms,
i must say that THESE ARE NOT FOR EVERYONE!.
they are small, real small buy todays standards,
but if you want to know what old vegas was like
these are the rooms for you! My favorite room
in all of vegas is at El Cortez, 2nd floor
across from the BARBER SHOP!.Pretty funny
really,I haven't cut my hair in 15 years or
shaved for that mater---&:[> It's small,the
bathrooms smaller, one view overlooks the roof,
aahhh but the other overlooks Freemont street,
right in front of the police dept.,what more
do i need to say... El Cortez is old, like all
of the downtown casinos, but the rooms are clean
they have edible food, they treat you like a
grown-up,$2.00 single deck blackjack 24/7.$1.00
craps, and the booze flows like water!!!!
Try It, You'll Like It!!

There are no laws against being CRAZY,besides
I NEVER listen to the constent little voices
in my head telling me what to do.SOOO-- HOW
COULD I BE CRAZY????? MMMMMMMM????
I do want to thank you for having a GREAT web
site!! I have been lurking here for a couple of
months and just had to join up, something I
would normally NEVER DO! I think it was those
damn trip reports that put me over the edge.
Finally, a web site you can ask a question and
not get 10 smart ass remarks.I knew it would
happen sometime but I was begining to wonder if
it would actually happen in MY lifetime. Now I
can rest assured that mankind or womankind or
HUMANKIND--OR-OR-WHATEVER!!!!!! is going to be
O.K.
OK--OK is crazy BAD??????

Does The El Cortez still maintain it's aisle of mechanical slots? You know, the machines where pulling the handle actually has an effect, that is, turning the wheels?

If they do I didn't see them but then I'm not a slot player although for an "old time" mechanical machine I might drop a few bucks. :D

No, I'm afraid to tell you they are not there
anymore.Well, at least I hav'nt SEEN any in a
while.Actually, the El Cortez has removed about
50% of there slot machines (to make more room)
and UPDATED ALOT of the slots!!They now have
MOST of the newer slots and LOTS of VP machines.
Things must be looking up at the El Cortez, they
put BRAND NEW CARPET in the place, the first
time i've every seen that in well--EVER!!! At
least as long as i've been going to Vegas, about
15-20 years or so. As of AUG.1 the El Cortez also
has a slot club,I was there a week to early so I
could'nt sign up to get details but I do believe
it's going to be like the Plaza's system,a COIN
OUT kinda thing.Does'nt sound to promising but
then they DO have pretty "loose" slots there.
I gotta admit, the've been REALLY good to me over
the years!!---Can You Say "LUCKY"

The slot club is a "coin out" system similiar to Jackies other properties. For a "limited time" they are offering 4000 free points for sign-up. You do hafta earn at least one point to be credited with the 4000. They pay the same for VP as the slots and have quite a few FP. Table games will still be comped by the pit bosses. Very player friendly! graemlins/beerchug.gif

I stayed at the El Cortez about 10 years ago..The room cost me $20 and was one floor up above the casino. It was shockingly nice and a vast contrast to the dingy casino below..I only stayed here because it was the same price as the Las Vegas hostel down on the strip but 10 times more luxurious...
